According to a new study from Common Sense Media and Boston Consulting Group, 30% of students in the U.S. either don't have internet access or access to a device adequate for distance learning. There are 9 million students across the country that don't have either.As another school year affected by COVID-19 inches closer, there are movements not only to prep kids but also to close the digital divide."It's an absolute national tragedy that we can fix," said James Steyer, the founder and CEO of Common Sense Media. "First of all, there needs to be money immediately appropriated in the next stimulus bill that would cover the cost of devices and connectivity for every student and every family in the United States. That's imminently doable and critical to our educational needs."Steyer says it's "shocking" that so many students lack the resources to e-learn — but the students aren't alone. The study also found that teachers are underpaid and working in under-resourced areas."Between 300,000 and 400,000 teachers in this country — essentially 10% of the teaching force — also have the digital divide and don't have the device and connectivity they need to teach in a distance learning environment," Steyer said. "We have a huge challenge, and we need to meet it now."Steyer is leading the charge for change. In a letter to Congress, he and more than a dozen well-known organizations called on lawmakers to "connect all students."One of the organizations in that group was Khan Academy — a non-profit funded by philanthropic donations. The online educational site offers free learning for anyone, anywhere — no strings attached."We've been talking about it well before COVID-19 — that learning should not be bound by time or space," founder Sal Khan said. "Wherever a student is, they should have support to fill in the gaps — to be able to practice things, to get immediate feedback on things, to get lessons on things — wherever they are."There's always a "summer slide" for students — a time when students regress as they fall out of pattern and often spend a portion of the new school year reviewing content. But the slide is deeper this year, thanks to the pandemic."Some of the research partners we work with think there may be a year of loss learning," Khan said. "Not only are kids not learning for those few months, but they're also atrophying — forgetting. And they're going to be out of school for so long; they'll have lost the habits of school."Khan said entire school districts and states aren't doing the educational prep they should be doing. Districts everywhere are scrambling to figure out what school will look like this fall and what their curriculum should entail."If we don't do a full-court press here, some very bad things could happen," Khan said.Right now, Khan Academy is working with school districts to prepare. They estimate a huge increase in users this fall."It's great, we're reaching 30 to 40 million. But, how do we reach them deeply, and how do we move the dial for them?" Khan said. "There's a billion kids we need to reach and reach deeply."Steyer says the way to reach those kids is through Congressional funding."We have been in touch with leaders on both sides of the aisle in House and Senate," Steyer said. "We almost had funding for the digital divide in the first major stimulus package, but it got taken out at the last minute. But we are optimistic that people will do the right thing once and for all and put the resources into the next stimulus package that will make it possible for all kids to do quality distance learning in this country."Steyer says the time is now for supporters to join their charge, or call local leaders so that they can, in some way, affect the learning loss and close the digital divide. 3778

So that’s a great thing, that’s entrepreneurship. Whenever we’re given a problem, people come up with a solution," says Charles Abell with the U.S. Small Business Association.Abell says new tech companies are also thriving because it's a business that can be run remotely."You see so many new tech businesses starting up and that’s a great thing. There's a lot of need for medical tech, so people are coming up with new apps on how do we track our area with the COVID-19 virus," says Abell.He says it can be tough for some people who are finding themselves out of work and an expert in just one industry to suddenly pivot to another. The SBA says some are turning their hobbies into businesses."They have a great sauce or they have a great product that they can make at home and they can use Amazon and do the shipping services to market their products. So, I think a lot of people are being very experimental right now," says Abell.People who focus on delivery services are also finding business is booming. And many of these businesses are benefiting from easier access to loans."This is an amazing time right now. A lot of people are refinancing their homes and getting the lowest interest rate possible. Well, guess what, starting your business is a very similar process," says Abell.The key right now for people who are thinking of starting a brand new business is to think through your plan and funding needs. And make sure the business can thrive in the current state of our economy."It's good that they have a business plan and have someone helping them with the business plan to make sure it's sustainable," says Abell.The SBA has free tools available to potential, new and longtime business owners on their website. After a dramatic lead-up, the House of Representatives failed to pass a massive farm bill as Republicans were unable to shore up support from some of their conservative members amid an ongoing party fight on immigration, despite Republican leaders' confident predictions it would pass just minutes before.The vote was 198-213.While Republican leaders said they were confident ahead of the vote, it was clear the bill was in jeopardy, and members of leadership could be seen on the floor holding last-minute negotiations.Complicating matters was a threat by conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus to withhold their support as they sought to get their desired outcome on an unrelated issue involving immigration. Close to 30 Republicans voted against the bill.Democrats, meanwhile, rejected the farm bill out of opposition to stricter work requirements in the food stamps program, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.The deadline to pass a farm bill is September 30.Republicans want to require more people to work in order to receive the benefits, extending the mandate to parents of school-age children and to those in their 50s.That's the main reason why Democrats are rejecting the bill. They worry the new requirements will prove too onerous for some of the very beneficiaries in need of the assistance. Those who fail to work or enroll in job training could be locked out for up to three years.President Donald Trump voiced support for the bill Thursday in a tweet."Tomorrow, the House will vote on a strong Farm Bill, which includes work requirements. "That is why the farm bill that we are debating today is so critical. It sets up a system for SNAP recipients where if you are able to work, you should work to get the benefits. A Wisconsin woman who jumped in front of an oncoming train to save her mom is now feeling well enough to share her story. The incident first happened back in August.Katie Wenszell, 28, is a Milwaukee teacher. She, her mom and her sisters were on a girls trip to Atlanta, waiting for a train, when the unthinkable happened to her mother."All of a sudden, the guy came out of nowhere and just pushed her. I didn't have any time to grab her. She was literally in the air and hitting the tracks," Katie said. Katie remembers bits and pieces of the day, but says her sister told her she walked to the end of the platform and was trying to yell for her mom to get up."Then, I looked down to see the training coming and all I did was jump. She had her head and feet on the tracks? And I knew that if I didn't get her off, she was going to die no matter what. I decided it worked in the movie, let's lay her out flat, lay me down flat, and hopefully pray to god that it will work."Katie says she does not remember what happened after she jumped, that it "all becomes literally black."Although they don't know for certain what happened underneath the train, it appears Katie's plan worked.  Her mom, Susan says "she managed to get me between those two tracks. That train went over the top of me. I never got hit by that train."Susan did suffer a concussion and severe head injuries from the fall. The train did hit Katie, as it was coming to a stop.When asked about her injuries, Katie said she has "a reconstructed shoulder, smashed my face, so I have plates in my face. And I have amputated toes."She also believes the train dragged her by her necklace, causing serious injuries to her neck. She woke up in the hospital five days later with a tube down her throat."Literally the moment it got taken out, is my mom OK was the first thing that came out of my mouth. What did they tell you? They said yep, she's fine, she's here," Katie said. Katie says she was ecstatic to find out her mom was alive, although her mom was upset that Katie risked her life to save her. "She's 28, I'm 57. My goodness, I've had my life," Susan said. That life now includes helping Katie get better so she can walk on her own again. The amputated area is healing so well, Katie wanted to show it to us."When I first saw it, I was the only one who took it perfectly fine. After it started going down, I was like mom, look at the tiny alien foot, because it's really tiny," Katie said. As you can see, Katie has a really positive outlook and is working hard to walk again. She was supposed to be in China right now, teaching English and still hopes to go at some point.As for the stranger who pushed her mom, another passenger held him until authorities arrived.  The family has a Go Fund Me page to help with Katie's medical bills.  2870

About 26,000 Ford vehicles are being recalled with three different safety concerns announced this week.The first one is for certain 2016-2020 Lincoln MKX and Nautilus vehicles with 16-way power seats. The issue is with the wiring of the seat harness and how close they are to the seat cushion pan. If certain wires are damaged from coming into contact with the seat cushion frame, Ford says the airbag system may not perform as intended.People with impacted models can go to a dealer to have them install flocking tape and check the wires.The second recall is for the newest model of F-650 and F-750 trucks. The vehicles are missing certain thermal protection components intended to reduce the interior cabin floor and seat attachment temperatures in hot conditions.The third recall affects less than 100 of the 2020 Ford Escape and Transit vehicles. The airbag may not inflate properly. People are encouraged to take their vehicle to a Ford dealer to have the airbag checked.Ford is not aware of any injuries from any of these safety concerns. 1052
