BEIJING, Nov. 23 (Xinhua) -- China's vegetable prices declined at a faster rate last week as weather remained good and local governments stepped up efforts to ensure supplies.According to a report by the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) on Tuesday, the prices of 18 types of vegetables for the week ending November 21 declined 2.6 percent from the previous week, and the pace of the fall accelerated from the previous week's 0.8 percent.The ministry said that radishes, cucumbers and celery were among the vegetables that witnessed the largest fall in prices, dropping 11.1 percent, 10 percent and 7 percent respectively week-on-week.This was good news for the Chinese government as it strove to ease inflation and keep rising prices in check.China's consumer price index (CPI), a main gauge of the country's inflation, surged to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent in October. Food prices, which account for one-third of the basket of goods used to calculate the CPI, soared 10.1 percent last month.However, according to the MOC report, China's meat and cooking oil prices during the period of November 15-21 edged up because of rising demand. Prices of pork and beef rose 2.2 percent and 0.7 percent respectively, week-on-week.

CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said.The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. MOSCOW, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping held talks with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Borodavkin here on Tuesday, exchanging views with the Russian side on the current situation of the Korean Peninsula.The two sides reached consensus on the issue, saying both China and Russia urged the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to jointly mitigate tensions on the peninsula and to resume direct dialogue at an early date.Escalating tensions on the peninsula may even trigger a war, which is absolute not in line with the interests of the relevant sides including Russia, the United States and Japan, the two diplomats said in a joint statement.The ROK and the DPRK are the most susceptible if the war broke out, the statement added.China and Russia will never allow any war on the peninsula, or the lingering tensions between the two countries. Thus, China and Russia will continue to further cooperation and coordination on the issue and to push forward the direct dialogue between the ROK and the DPRK, the diplomats said.They said China and Russia are calling for joint efforts from relevant sides to stabilize the situation on the peninsula and not to impair peace, safety or stability.The two sides also reiterated that the six-party talks were proved to be the most realistic and most effective solution to solving the problem.Currently, emergency consultations among the heads of delegations to the six-party talks are in urgent need, they added.Launched in 2003 and stalled since the end of 2008, the six- party talks on the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue involve China, the United States, the DPRK, the ROK, Russia and Japan.The two sides also exchanged views on bilateral ties, including high-level exchanges, the overall promotion of China-Russia strategic partnership of coordination, and several other issues.

BEIJING, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Beijing will adopt tough water management measures in the next five years to ease acute water shortages, according to local water authorities.The measures include setting warning lines for the quantity of water consumption, efficiency of water use and water pollution levels within the metropolitan area, Bi Xiaogang, spokesman with the Beijing Water Authority, was quoted as saying by Monday's Beijing Daily.Local governments would be punished if they missed the targets, he said, adding it was the first time that such measures had been formulated.The measures, which were still being drafted by the municipal government, will be implemented during the first half of 2011, Bi was quoted as saying.Beijing has been plagued by drought for 12 years in a row, during which its per capita amount of water resources has been nearly halved to about 150 cubic meters.With nearly 20 million residents and more than 4.7 million vehicles, the metropolis has a water resource deficit of 400 million cubic meters, although it transferred 320 million cubic meters of water from neighboring Hebei Province last year.
