SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Children in San Diego could soon go without food if the federal government doesn't extend waivers put in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. The San Diego Unified School District is warning about that possibility after the U.S. Department of Agriculture ended supplemental food support for local families. The changes are expected at the end of September. The USDA decided they would end the supplemental support during the pandemic. After Sept. 30, families will be required to verify identification, proof of school attendance and eligibility to quality for the free family meals. These things were waived in March because of the pandemic. SD Unified officials say the USDA hasn't responded to their request to extend the waivers. District officials are taking steps to try and fill in the gaps by working with partners like the San Diego Food Bank and Feeding San Diego. The district also announced triple the distribution sites, up from 28 to 82. Students or their parents/guardians who qualify for subsidized meals can drive through or walk up to receive breakfast and lunch, Monday through Friday, from noon to 2 p.m. during the 2020-21 school year, which begins on Aug. 31.The district is also offering assistance to any family that needs help completing the required forms. The district says they have distributed more than 4 million meals to students since March. They say these meals are often the only quality meal they receive. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Before Vice President Mike Pence made his way to Coronado, he spent the morning at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel.The Vice President and Second lady stayed there during their San Diego Visit. A few protestors inflated the now well-known "Baby Trump" outside of the hotel; It's possible the Vice President got a look at the giant balloon. "We're hoping that the Vice President sees this and sees that there is resistance here in San Diego," says protestor Will Johnson. The giant balloon was an attention grabber for many who saw it on Park Boulevard. "I knew he was coming to town, but I didn't know he was staying here," says Kate Permenter. Permenter is in town for a convention and staying at the Hilton Bayfront Hotel, saying, "So last night people kind of started freaking out."Outside of the hotel, security checked every car making its way into the garage. Hotel guests say there are dozens of police officers and secret service agents inside of the hotel. "At every entrance, there are cops just kind of staring at you."Dozens of officers escorted the motorcade as the Vice President left downtown this morning. Protestors said there would be another demonstration outside of the hotel at 7 p.m. but "Baby Trump" will not be in attendance. 1270

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Crowds are already flocking to San Diego beaches for the Fourth of July weekend.On Friday, many people claimed their spots early at Mission Beach and Oceanside.While some were able to keep their distance from one another, many did not have on facial coverings when near other people.“The majority of them are not wearing masks, I would say at this point in time,” said Rich Stropky, Marine Safety Lieutenant for San Diego lifeguards.He said more people are expected to make their way to San Diego Saturday as other Southern California beaches will be closed.Law enforcement agencies across San Diego have said they will focus on education, rather than enforcement when someone violates the public health order.He said the parking lots at Mission Beach were full by noon Friday.“As far as the capacity for our beaches, what has limited capacity in the past is the ability to park,” he said. “How far are people willing to park and still walk to the beach? Are they going to Uber in? Are they going to do drop-offs?”Stropky urged beachgoers to talk to lifeguards if they have any questions and to follow the public health order and original beach rules.“We have our COVID safety guidelines, and we want everyone to adhere to that,” he said. “We have our beach regulations; there’s no glass, there’s no dogs between 9 and 6, there’s no camping.”There’s also a beach hazard statement in effect this weekend. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Dance is a way to lose yourself and escape. For students taking the Ballet for Me! Class at the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet School in Balboa Park, dance is their escape.“I just love it cause it like brings me joy and it can take me to my happy place,” said Renata Scorza-Muniz.Renata has been taking regular ballet classes since she was 2 years old. But in February, her life changed.“It’s stressful, I guess, to be in the hospital,” said Renata.Renata was diagnosed with cancer, causing her to lose her vision and forcing her out of her regular ballet class.That’s when she turned to a class called Ballet for Me.“It’s just so fun to do,” said Renata.Ballet for Me is a tuition-waved class that is designed for kids with unique physical needs. Each student in the class gets paired up with a mentor to help guide them through each movement.“It just makes me so happy when I get to see students feel happy and free in class,” said Kerri DeNies instructor and creator of the class.This dance class helps the kids feel whole again. And all year they rehearse for their moment to shine and perform in front of a packed audience where they feel a little more joy and beam with confidence. 1213
