TAMPA, Fla. — Kids may be spending more time online this summer than in years past due to the coronavirus pandemic — and authorities warn online predators could use that extra, unsupervised time to their advantage."They had some incidences where people had broken into their Zoom calls, and what was great about that was because we had created a space where dialogue can happen, they told me about it," Damaris Allen, the Immediate Past President of the Hillsborough County PTA said. "That was really important because we had the groundwork laid."With school out and summer in full swing, many kids are spending their time online during the health crisis. Some officials worry now may be the most dangerous time for online predators."With camps being limited, parents being stretched thin, and kids spending more time online, it creates, unfortunately, a perfect storm for online predators," Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said.Warren released a video on social media Monday with three tips for parents can take to help their kids have a "Secure Summer."First, the State Attorney says talk to your child and explain how they may be approached."Secondly, make sure that parents are actually watching what their kids are doing online," said Warren "Have the passwords, check to see what kids are doing and what information they're receiving."Warren also suggests using parental controls on devices and apps to choose what your child can access. His office says it has already seen online predators try to exploit children during the pandemic."Law enforcement is really paying attention to what's going on online now. We're working overtime to catch online predators," Warren said. "We're going to aggressively prosecute them. We won't stand for anyone trying to take advantage of our kids, especially during such a difficult time for all of us."Parents suggest starting that conversation now, so kids know they have a safe space to start a dialogue."This is a scary topic, don't avoid it because it's a scary topic," said Allen. The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in August was widely panned by public health experts for gathering tens of thousands of people amid a pandemic.In the months since, the impact of the rally is still being studied.According to CDC data released in recent days, 51 attendees of the rally who resided in Minnesota were infected with the coronavirus in the days following the event. Of them, three were hospitalized and one person died.There were also 35 coronavirus cases tied to direct contacts of those who were infected after attending the rally. Of them, one person was hospitalized.“The findings suggest that this rally not only had a direct impact on the health of attendees, but also led to subsequent SARS-CoV-2 transmission among household, social, and workplace contacts of rally attendees upon their return to Minnesota,” the CDC said in its findings. “Whole genome sequencing results supported the finding of secondary and tertiary transmission associated with this rally.”Amid the rally, Minnesota’s Department of Health recommended that motorcycle rally attendees quarantine for 14 days upon return and be tested 5–7 days later even if they were asymptomatic, according to the CDC.Following the rally, the City of Sturgis required government workers to be tested for COVID-19. Talking to a wide range of Black voters Tuesday in South Carolina, the big topic on everyone’s mind is racial tension.“I kind of feel like it’s a lot going on. It’s kind of scary, now that I have kids. So I’m just hoping after today, a little changes,” a voter said.Mika Gadsden says she was born to Jim Crow refugees. She is now a political activist and says she recently asked her father if the racial tension we’re seeing today is similar to what he experienced decades ago. His answer was not what Gadsden expected.“He actually surprised me and said that this is unlike some of things he saw growing up. So I said ‘Pops, you’ve seen the clan in action’ and he said ‘yes, but that was typically under the shadow of night. You didn’t know who, what, when or where’. He feels as though it’s more brazen now,” Gadsden explained.Trudy Grant is a senior consultant for the Conference of National Black Churches. She’s actually been organizing drivers to get people to the polls Tuesday.She says what happened to George Floyd and so many other innocent people of color really impacted the political views of the Black community this election season.“That happened in the front of the world. So it’s not as if we’re making up that there’s police brutality. We don’t have to make it up. You all saw it. And so I think that has made the difference. It has opened the eyes of not only the Black community, but also everyone around the world,” Grant said.A majority of the Black community we spoke to is in favor of a Biden-Harris win. But there is a group of Black conservatives who are rallying behind Trump, like Charleston community leader Johnathan Thrower.“He’s been one of the only Republican presidents that have talked straight to Black America,” Thrower said. “I’d be nervous if Biden becomes president. One of the things I’d be nervous about is how will be handle the economy during COVID. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is back in the hospital on Wednesday, according to a court statement.The statement said that Ginsburg is resting comfortably and is expected to be released from the hospital later this week.The statement said that Ginsburg underwent a minimally invasive non-surgical procedure today at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to revise a bile duct stent that was originally placed at Sloan Kettering in August 2019.Stent revisions are common occurrences and the procedure, performed using endoscopy and medical imaging guidance, was done to minimize the risk of future infection, her doctors said, according to a statement.In May, Ginsburg was hospitalized for treatment for a benign gallbladder condition.Ginsburg has also beaten cancer four times, most recently she declared herself “cancer free” in January following treatment for pancreatic cancer. 918
