Puerto Rico was hit with a massive power outage, the power authority said Thursday -- nearly seven months after Hurricane Maria destroyed much of the island's infrastructure and its electrical grid. The Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority, known as PREPA, said a tree fell on a major power line, knocking out service to 870,000 customers, about half of its clients. The utility tweeted an image it says was of the tree that fell across a power line near the southeast mountain town of Cayey.Major blackouts were reported from the northern coastal town of Manatí to Yabucoa, roughly 50 miles southeast. The blackout also includes the capital of San Juan, the most populated area of the island."We are devastated at this point," Cynthia García Coll, an educational psychologist who lives near San Juan, told CNN. "Every time this happens we go into PTSD mode."San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz said it could take eight to 16 hours for electricity to be restored. 966

Prosecutors will seek to put Nikolas Cruz to death for carrying out last month's massacre at a Parkland, Florida, high school, they announced in court filings Tuesday.A Broward County grand jury last week indicted the 19-year-old gunman on 17 counts of premeditated murder in the first degree and 17 counts of attempted murder in the first degree. In its filing, the prosecution said that, among the aggravating factors spurring its decision, were that Cruz knowingly created a risk of death for many people, his crime was aimed at hindering "any government function or the enforcement of laws" and that the shooting was "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel."Read the notice of intent for yourselfAnother factor: "The capital felony was a homicide and was committed in a cold, calculated and premeditated manner without any pretense of moral or legal justification."Cruz, through his attorneys, had previously expressed a willingness to plead guilty to avoid the death penalty.Prosecutors, in Tuesday's filing, also ask the court to put several provisions in place in the event that Cruz's defense intends to introduce documentation or testimony regarding their client's mental health. This could certainly come into play as Cruz's defense team has said he battled with mental illness and depression after his adoptive mother died. From 'broken child' to mass killerDuring a previous hearing, a public defender described him as a "deeply disturbed, emotionally broken" young man who is coming to grips with the pain he has caused. Classmates and others who knew him also described signs of mental illness, with some telling media outlets they outright predicted he might one day be a school shooter.Cruz was arrested shortly after committing the Valentine's Day killings and fleeing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School campus among terrified students. Seventeen students and teachers died in the shooting. The teen confessed to being the gunman, according to a probable cause affidavit released shortly after his arrest.Tuesday's news comes one day before the one-month anniversary of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. On Wednesday, students across the nation intend to walk out of schools in solidarity with the Parkland students and to demand tougher gun control laws.The-CNN-Wire 2307

Retail credit card APRs have not changed despite the Federal Reserve slashing interest rates to near zero this year, according to a new report from CreditCards.com.Store-only cards have the highest interest rate at nearly 30%. That's the case for a few jewelers, Discount Tire and Big Lots, which sells furniture and appliances.“They're kind of preying, in some cases, on people who are really desperate to buy something, but may not have the money for it,” said Ted Rossman, an industry analyst at CreditCards.com. “So, it's really all about risk management.”The website’s survey found more than 43% of people have impulsively applied for a store card at checkout. That phenomenon may change this holiday season, when much of the shopping is expected to be online.“It might be less of an issue this year,” said Rossman. “Although, who knows? Maybe the shoppers that are in store are going to be peddled these even more aggressively, so it's something to watch for.”Store credit cards can be worth it if you pay your bills in full to avoid interest and you're loyal to a certain retailer. That's especially true for cards that offer 5% back on everything you buy. Amazon, Walmart, Target and a few clothing stores offer those kinds of rewards. If you're just signing up for an initial discount, don't waste it on a small purchase.Remember a credit card is different from a free loyalty program. You might be getting into something that could hurt your credit score. 1470

Rafael Nadal, the current No. 2-ranked tennis player in the world and winner of 19 career Grand Slam titles, won’t play in the upcoming US Open citing coronavirus concerns.Nadal, 34, is chasing Roger Federer for most career Grand Slam titles as both players head toward the twilights of the careers. For Nadal the spread of the coronavirus took precedence to catching Federer, who has won 20 Grand Slams.“The situation is very complicated worldwide, the COVID-19 cases are increasing, it looks like we still don’t have control of it,” Nadal said on Tuesday. “We know that the reduced tennis calendar is barbaric this year after 4 months stopped with no play, I understand and thank for the efforts they are putting in to make it happen.”The tennis calendar was scaled back in March as the coronavirus began to spread worldwide. This year’s Wimbledon tournament was canceled altogether, while the French Open, a tournament Nadal has won a record-setting 12 times, has been postponed to early October.Despite major tournaments being postponed, players have continued playing competitive matches, sometimes amid controversy. Early in the summer, tennis star Novak Djokovic organized an Eastern Europe tournament that ignored coronavirus safety measures. The tournament’s final ended up being canceled, and a number of players, including Djokovic, ended up with coronavirus infections. 1389

At the event, he also awarded members with honors.Watch the event below:Trump has remained largely silent on the fires in the past few weeks. However, in recent days, he's taken to thanking firefighters in the region for their work in battling the flames.Trump addressed the fires during a Saturday campaign rally in Reno, Nevada — a city under a dense smoke advisory due to the nearby blazes."My administration is closely coordinating with state and local leaders, and we want to thank the more than 200,000 people that are working on it and 28,000 firefighters and first responders who courageously and bravely are fighting out there," Trump said.He added that California, Oregon and Washington had "never had anything like this," and stressed the need for better "forest management." 1293
