As students return to school and employees head back to the office all with new safety protocols likely including wearing a mask, a new study from Duke University explores which masks are more effective.Spoiler alert: A fitted N95 mask, usually reserved for those in the medical community, performed the best in their test. However, since many Americans do not have access to those and have been using a mix of store-bought or homemade cotton and fabric facial coverings, Duke tested 13 other kinds of masks.The study, which was published Friday, was prompted when a professor at Duke’s School of Medicine was asked to assist a local group buying masks in bulk for the community. According to CNN, the professor wanted to make sure the masks they bought were effective.Researchers gathered 14 kinds of masks, including the professionally-fitted N95 mask, a bandana, homemade cotton varieties, and a surgical mask. They then used a dark room, laser beam and cell phone camera to record how many droplets (which reflect the laser beam light) each mask allows through.For each mask test and the non-mask wearing control test, the speaker was recorded saying “Stay healthy, people” five times. ASHLAND COUNTY, Ohio - The Ashland County, Ohio Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an 8-year-old boy allegedly shot his sister, who is 4-years-old.According to deputies, it happened on Saturday at their home in Hayesville Village.The little girl was taken to the hospital for multiple gunshot wounds and is currently listed in stable condition.The boy was removed from the home, and their mother is now in custody. BALTIMORE — Americans stepped up their home purchases in June by a robust 20.7% after the pandemic had caused sales to crater in the prior three months. But the housing market could struggle to rebound further in the face of the resurgent viral outbreak and a shrinking supply of homes for sale. Sales of existing homes rose last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.72 million, the National Association of Realtors said. Their data showed all four regions of the country saw growth, with the west experiencing a larger increase. The data included single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums and co-ops. Despite the sharp monthly gain, purchases are still down 11.3% from a year ago, when homes had sold at an annual pace of 5.32 million.Inventory remains an issues, according to the National Association of Realtors (NAR). A low number of available homes was an issue before the pandemic. Total inventory is down 18.2 percent from a year ago, according to the data. The low supply and increasing demand could cause a spike in the price of homes.“Home prices rose during the lockdown and could rise even further due to heavy buyer competition and a significant shortage of supply," said Lawrence Yun, NAR’s chief economist.The median price for exisiting-home sales in June was 3.5 percent higher than a year ago. BALTIMORE — A 79-year-old New York woman lost thousands of dollars after she fell for the "grandparent scam."Earlier this week, the woman received a call from someone posing as her granddaughter. The woman on the phone said, "Grandma, I need help," then handed the phone to someone claiming to be her lawyer.Susan Mayorga's mother thought it was her eldest granddaughter on the phone and agreed to hear the man out."He said, you need to send me ,000 immediately in cash, wrapped in a magazine, here's the address, send it overnight early delivery UPS, and everything will be cleared up," said Mayorga.Mayorga's mom went straight to the bank, then to UPS where she mailed ,000 in cash to 208 South Loudon Avenue, a vacant home in Baltimore. The next day, she received another call.“[He said], 'Oh, I didn't realize there's a gun involved and gunpowder went off, so it's more than a misdemeanor, we need another ,000,'” said Mayorga.Her mom only had ,000 left, and sent it. But before it got there, Mayorga's mom discovered her granddaughter was fine. She immediately told her children and they got to work calling UPS.“I immediately got the tracking number, I called UPS, and spoke to a supervisor and told them it's a scam, there's cash in the envelope this cannot be delivered. It's a scam, please hold the envelope and have it sent back,” Mayorga said.UPS tracking history shows they received a request to place the order on hold, but it was still delivered.“Someone was outside waiting for it and signed his name at 7 a.m. and took the package and left,” Mayorga said.Last year, 1 in 5 people lost money to impostor schemes like the grandparent scam. The total loss amounted to 8 million, according to the Federal Trade Commission. And scammers get away with it because they know people will do anything for the ones they love.“It's just sad because she doesn't have a lot of money and she’s like, I would do anything, give my last penny for my grandchildren, so it's just extra sad,” said Mayorga.Mayorga’s mother called the scammer and he answered. He said he received the package but wanted to know why she tried to hold it up. At least 257 people have been killed in a military plane crash near Algeria's capital, Algiers, state media reports.The aircraft crashed near the Boufarik air base, between Algiers and the city of Bilda.
