BEIJING, May 10 (Xinhuanet) -- America's first full face transplant recipient, Dallas Wiens, made his first public appearance at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, according to media reports Tuesday.Sporting a goatee and dark sunglasses, Wiens, the 25-year-old Fort Worth, Texas, man, said Monday his new face feels natural just weeks after a 15-hour procedure that gave him a nose, lips, skin, muscle and nerves. Wiens said he was able to smell again and breathe through his nose normally, adding his 4-year-old daughter told him when she saw him after the operation: "Daddy, you're so handsome."  Wiens lost all of his features and eyesight in November 2008 after hitting a power line while painting a church and underwent the transplant in March, 2011. The operation was paid for by the U.S. Department of Defense which gave the hospital a 3.4 million dollar research grant for five transplants.Surgeons said the transplant was not able to restore his sight, and some nerves were so badly damaged from his injury that he will probably have only partial sensation on his left cheek and the left side of his forehead."The most fun part is to see the next six to nine months when the function will start to come back and when Dallas will start to feel a light touch on his face," plastic surgeon Bohdan Pomahac said. "To me, that's really exciting."About a dozen face transplants have been done worldwide, in China, the U.S., France and Spain.

MOSCOW, Jan. 24 (Xinhua) -- China and Russia held the fifth round of strategic security talks here Monday, pledging more joint efforts to strengthen national, regional and international security.The Chinese delegation, led by Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo, was visiting Russia at the invitation of Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev.During the talks, the two parties exchanged views on major international issues and the further development of strategic partnership and interaction between Russia and China.Both sides agreed that their close bilateral cooperation on global issues has helped maintain regional and world peace, safety and stability.The two countries acknowledged that in order to further enhance strategic mutual trust and improve the security situation around the global, the two sides should chart the development of Sino- Russian relations for the next 10 years from a strategic and comprehensive perspective.As long-time strategic partners, Russia and China will adhere to the principles of mutual trust, win-win cooperation and good neighborliness while conducting strategic coordination, the two sides pledged.The fourth round of Sino-Russian security consultations took place in Beijing in December 2009, when Russia and China signed a protocol on cooperation in the strategic security sphere. BEIJING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- More than 9,300 kidnapped children in China have been rescued since April 2009 since a nationwide campaign was launched to crack down on human trafficking, according to the Ministry of Public Security Thursday.In a statement, the ministry encouraged the involvement of civilians in providing clues to help the police rescue minors -- especially those being abused and forced to beg on the streets.In less than three weeks, a Chinese microblog called "Street Photos to Rescue Child Beggars" attracted 175,000 followers and posted more than 2,500 images of begging children online for parents to identify.The blog was set up last month by a professor with the Rural Development Institute of the Beijing-based China Academy of Social Sciences. It has helped rescue six children so far.However, the ministry noted in the statement that children kidnapped to become beggars took up only a small portion of all cases of child beggars. In most cases, children were taken to beg along with their parents or relatives.The ministry has urged police authorities across the country to closely cooperate with civil affairs, urban management and health departments in apprehending people who force children to become beggars.

BEIJING, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu on Sunday urged local authorities to intensify efforts to prevent forest fires.The senior Chinese official also ordered the country's forest fire prevention departments to come up with emergency response measures to be implemented as soon as fires break out.Hui warned that the country faced severe challenges from forest fires as the drought in the north continued and there was less rain than normal in the south in February.A total of 168 forest fires were recorded from Feb. 2 to Feb. 6, according to monitoring stations from the country's forest fire management authority.On Saturday, a forest blaze killed six people and left another three injured in east China's Zhejiang Province. Local officials said fireworks were the likely cause of the tragedy.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Apple Inc.'s iPad 2 has topped the ratings by Consumer Reports, an influential U.S. magazine for product reviews, in the latest tests of the 10 most- promising tablet computers.According to the ratings released on Tuesday, the Apple iPad 2 with Wi-Fi plus 3G (32G), which is priced at 730 U.S. dollars, topped the ratings, scoring "excellent" in nearly every category.Besides several models from Apple, other brands tested include Archos, Dell, Motorola, Samsung and Viewsonic. Each tablet was evaluated on 17 criteria, including touch-screen responsiveness, versatility, portability, screen glare and ease of use."So far, Apple is leading the tablet market in both quality and price, which is unusual for a company whose products are usually premium priced," Paul Reynolds, electronics editor at Consumer Reports, said in a statement.The Motorola Xoom, whose price is 800 dollars, stood out as the iPad 2's main rival. It boasts several features that the iPad lacks, including a built-in memory card reader and support for the Flash videos.The first-generation iPad, priced at 580 dollars, also outscored many of the other models tested but tied with the Motorola Xoom, according to tests by Consumer Reports.
