ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Old Palomar Hospital on the eastern edge of downtown Escondido could be redeveloped into hundreds of new homes and thousands of square feet of commercial, recreational and office space.In a letter to the city, developer Integral Communities says it wants to turn the site into a 450 homes, and 5,500 square feet of commercial spaces. The project could serve as a new gateway to downtown and add some much needed foot-traffic to Grand Avenue. Some businesses were closed Wednesday despite this being the midst of holiday shopping season. Beth Stevens, who owns the Vinklectic boutique on Grand Avenue, said she would welcome the project and the crowds it could bring. "I think new development is a good thing for everyone," Stevens said. Other business owners, however, said they are concerned about the project's increased traffic. But Rorie Johnston, who heads the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, said downtown needs to become more walkable. "The more you can slow people down, the more you can keep people in an area longer, the more possibility you have to engage with them," she said. Integral reached a deal with Palomar in February to buy the site for million. Palomar moved most of its services to its new hospital in west Escondido in 2012, making the older hospital available. It still offers cancer treatments, mental health services, and has office facilities at the downtown site. A hospital spokesman says it expects to stay in the downtown location through March 2020. ESPN says it has a pretty good idea of who's going to pony up .99 a month for its new streaming service.Cord cutters, it probably won't be you.The new service, dubbed ESPN+, debuts Thursday. The company gave CNNMoney a sneak peek last week — and there's a lot that it brings to the table.It offers thousands of hours of live sports that aren't available on national TV, including, soccer, boxing, golf, rugby, cricket, and a baseball and hockey game or two every day of the MLB and NHL seasons.It has a few exclusives, too, including some episodes of the lauded ESPN documentary series "30 for 30" — plus that show's entire back catalog. There's also Kobe Bryant's new basketball analysis show "Detail," which premieres just in time for the NBA playoffs.That all adds up to a ton of content, and it's hard not to feel a bit overwhelmed by the variety. ESPN executives sounded downright breathless last week as they rattled off the number of programs they are bringing to the service."I, personally, am incredibly excited about the potential," new ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro told reporters at the company's Connecticut headquarters. You will still need a cable subscription to watch all the biggest NFL, NBA and college games featured on traditional ESPN networks.And even if you're a fan of the sports touted on ESPN+, you'll still likely need paid access to the ESPN TV channels or another season pass to watch every game.In other words: If you don't already pay for cable, an ESPN+ subscription will give you some of a lot of things, but not all of everything. And you're definitely not getting the big stuff.The Disney-owned ESPN knows this. Pitaro made it pretty clear that he didn't expect customers to treat the new service as a standalone, and described it as "complementary and additive to what you've been getting."Pitaro added that ESPN+ wasn't designed to compete with distributors like Comcast, AT&T and Dish Network's Sling TV that offer cable bundles. All of those companies sell packages that include ESPN's TV channels.All of the ESPN+ content is integrated into a newly redesigned ESPN app, which you can download for your phone or streaming device. It works on all the major platforms, including iPhone, Android, Apple TV, Roku and Amazon Fire.I tested an iPhone version that subscribed to ESPN's TV channels and ESPN+, and it was easy to pull up live games, replays and other clips playing on any of the main ESPN channels or the add-on service. A tab that features game scores for all of my favorite teams was an added bonus.The Apple TV version of the app was just as simple to use, and even allowed me to watch up to four events simultaneously. (KGTV) - Surveillance video captured a man in a truck treating an Escondido neighborhood like a dumping ground.In the video, a white truck pulls up in the 800 block of North Citrus Avenue just before 1 p.m.  The driver goes to the back and casually pulls the couch onto the street, before going back to the truck to toss out a piece of carpet. He then drives off."Just makes our neighborhood look bad and ugly, and we don't want that," said Gil Gomez who lives feet from where the couch was dumped.His frustrations growing every time he watches the video, recorded from his Ring camera. That's because the truck appears to be a newer model Ford F-150."If you can afford to buy a brand new truck, you can afford to get rid of this thing properly," said Gomez.Gomez fears this type thing could attract more dumping."It might happen around the corner next time. That is the type of culture we cannot stand for," said Gomez.Gomez posted the video on the Neighbors by Ring app to track the person down and to send a message to would-be dumpers. "Not in our neighborhood. Experts say those feeling the pain of the financial crisis the most are millennials. The generation has missed major milestones that past generations enjoyed in their 30’s and 40’s as a result of dealing with two major financial crises over the past decade.However, it may not be all gloom and doom for millennials. The economic cycles the generation has experienced early on could lead them to understand the economy and markets better, potentially leveraging that to greater future gains.Many millennials graduated and entered the workforce during the 2008 Great Recession. They were just hitting their prime, and then, this pandemic and a second major financial crisis hit.“It just feels not only like we can’t catch a break, but we can’t even get started without something coming along and taking away a lot of what we worked for,” said Erin Lowry.Erin Lowry is an author and wrote the books “Broke Millennial” and “Broke Millennial Takes on Investing”.“The big thing to consider for your financial future is this will be temporary,” said Lowry. "We are going to get through this just like we got through ’08.”Surveys conducted by the Urban Institute show at least 1 in 3 millennials are struggling financially right now, and millennials as a whole have less acclimated wealth at this stage in life than the prior generation. To change that, even during this recession, Lowry believes there are a few key things millennials can do.“You do want to think about doing, and I hesitate to say it like this, but the least damage currently,” said Lowry.She recommends minimizing the amount of debt you may need to take on to get through this economic downturn. Also, protect your credit scores as much as possible by making on-time payments.Pay the minimum if needed or contact your lenders to work out agreements that will not show missed payments on your credit report. In the future, you’ll want a healthy credit score to be able to qualify for mortgage loans or auto loans at a lower interest rate.Lastly, try to still contribute to your retirement plan even if it’s a little bit. If you are in a position where every penny counts right now, think about a time in the near future when you can start to again invest. That is important because, historically, the market will rebound.To recover on a better financial footing, you want to buy when the market is low, or down, and reap the gains as the economy recovers.“After 2008, we went on to have one of the longest bull runs in stock market history,” said Lowry. "We don’t know what is going to happen after the coronavirus recession, but you don’t want to miss out on potentially huge returns.”The possible advantage of going through two recessions early in life may be a better understanding of the economy and a stronger desire to understand the market, along with learning how to use the downturn as an opportunity for future gains. 2896
