TEHRAN, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) -- Iran and China signed a 1.76 billion U.S. dollars deal here on Wednesday for the initial development of Iran's North Azadegan oil field, the official IRNA news agency reported.     The deal was signed between China National Petroleum Corporation(CNPC) and the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) in the presence of Iranian oil minister Gholam Hossein Nozari and Chinese ambassador Xie Xiaoyan, IRNA said.     The North Azadegan oil field which located in Iran's western province of Khuzestan has an estimated reserve of six billion barrels of oil and can produce 75,000 barrels per day for 25 years, Nozari was quoted as saying.     Under the deal, CNPC is committed to developing the oil field in two phases, IRNA said.     Oil output of the North Azadegan oil field will reach 150,000 barrels per day when both the two phases of the project are finished, Nozari added.     According to IRNA, the deal is in the form of buy-back terms, based on which CNPC hands over the operation of the field to NIOC after development and receives payment from oil production for a few years to cover its investment.     The period for the development and reimbursement for the first and the second phase of the field would be about 12 and 17 years, Nozari said. 

BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao paid visits to the Beijing Military Area Command and a local communication station of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on Wednesday, just days ahead of the traditional Lunar New Year. Hu, who is also General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, first conveyed New Year greetings to the soldiers on behalf of the CPC Central Committee and the Central Military Commission.     This year's Lunar New Year falls on January 26.     He urged the PLA soldiers to promote military values and make further contributions to national defense and modernization. BEIJING, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said on Wednesday that increased environment protection efforts would help significantly to boost domestic demand and open new economic growth points. China would continue to make environmental protection a priority to benefit the people and ensure a stable economy, he told the annual meeting of the China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED).     China faced difficult tasks in protecting its environment as itwas the world's biggest developing country with huge economic growth potential. FUZHOU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Construction on a new nuclear power plant started Friday in southeast China's Fujian Province.     The Fuqing Nuclear Power Plant, located in the coastal city of Fuqing, requires an investment of around 100 billion yuan (14.6 billion U.S. dollars).     It will have six units that generate millions of kilowatts each.     During the first phase of the project, two units will be built and put into operation in 2013 and 2014. They will use advanced second-generation pressurized water reactor technology. The two units are expected to generate more than 14 billion kilowatts of electricity annually, most of which would be consumed within the province. Ltd. will jointly build and operate the plant.     The three companies have a stake of 51 percent, 39 percent and 10 percent, respectively, in the new plant.     An unidentified local government official said three billion yuan has already been spent since preparation work for the project started in 2007.Another five billion was planned for 2009.     The project is expected to create more than 10,000 jobs.     Currently, China has 11 nuclear power reactors in operation. All reactors employ second-generation nuclear power technologies.     The country plans to have 40-million-kilowatts of installed capacity in nuclear power by 2020, accounting for four percent of China's energy production.     Right now, installed capacity of nuclear power is only about nine million kilowatts, or about two percent of the total power the country produces.

ADDIS ABABA, Nov. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislator Wu Bangguo said here Sunday that China's relations with Ethiopia have been developing quite rapidly in recent years and have been pushed up to a higher level.     He made the statement during talks with Speaker of Ethiopian Council of People's Representatives Teshome Toga.     "Since our countries established foreign relations with each other, especially, since their comprehensive cooperation partnership was formed in 2003, high-level exchanges between our two countries have been more frequent and bilateral trade has been shooting up," Wu said.     "Now our relations have ushered in a new era," he added.     Wu said that both China and Ethiopia are developing countries and therefore face the similar issues such as economic development. The rapid booming of both economies have provided new opportunities for deeper and wider cooperation.     "This is conducive to the welfare and the basic interests of both countries and peoples, as well as constructive to world's peace and prosperity," Wu said.     The Ethiopian speaker agreed with Wu's comments on relations of the two countries and said that Wu's Africa tour, especially, the visit to Ethiopia, is of high importance and can further boost bilateral ties.     Teshome Toga also thanked China for its unconditional support for Ethiopia, adding that the two countries can cooperate better in trade, investment and finance sectors.     He said that Ethiopia will, as it has done in the past, continue to stick to "One China" policy and Wu expressed his appreciation for his Ethiopian counterpart's firm commitment as such.     Wu is on a five-African nation tour. Ethiopia is the third leg of his two-week-long visit to Africa.
