CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — A German father and son had the summer vacation of a lifetime spanning seven countries, eight cities, and eight theme parks.Better yet, they pulled off the feat in a mere 13 days.Dieter Deussen and his five-year-old son, Julian, finished the last leg of their journey to visit all Legoland theme parks in the world Tuesday. Deussen began the trek wanting to give his son a special experience before he starts school for the first time in September, according to Legoland.RELATED: Legoland offers guests free admission on their birthday in 2019His son being a big Lego fan, Deussen suggested the global tour. The trip took the father eight months of planning, hours he said he would never trade. “100 percent it was worth it. To see Julian smile so much at every park and interact with children from around the world, regardless of the language difference, was amazing for me to see. I would absolutely do it again," Deussen said.In less than two weeks, the duo completed a world tour of all eight of the theme parks:June 27 – LEGOLAND Windsor June 28 – LEGOLAND BillundJune 30 – LEGOLAND DeutschlandJuly 1 – LEGOLAND DubaiJuly 3 – LEGOLAND MalaysiaJuly 5 – LEGOLAND JapanJuly 7 – LEGOLAND CaliforniaJuly 8-9 – LEGOLAND FloridaIn Carlsbad, the father and son began their stay at the Legoland Castle Hotel, before exploring Miniland U.S.A, the deep sea on the Lego City Deep Sea Adventure Submarine ride, and meeting a throng of Lego characters. And, of course, playing with a bunch of Legos.RELATED: Recreation Destination: San Diego ranks at top of U.S. citiesLegoland says the pair's journey isn't quite complete though. CALEXICO, Calif. (KGTV) - Nearly two and a half miles of the current border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border in Calexico are being replaced with 30-foot high, bollard-style walls. The section of the replacement, which broke ground last week, extends from the Calexico Port of Entry westward just past Gran Plaza Outlets, according to Customs and Border Protection officials. The project also includes 2.25 miles of all-weather roads.CBP officials tweeted out photos of the construction Thursday, saying "replacement project in Calexico is going well. 30-foot tall steel bollard wall is stacked on the ground waiting to be installed after the removal of old landing mat barrier."RELATED: President Trump to visit San Diego, inspect border wall prototypesThe section under construction was built in the 1990s out of recycled metal scraps and old landing mat. While officials said the wall has proven effective, "smuggling organizations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years," resulting in costly repairs. The construction is separate from President Donald Trump's promised wall across the border. The project is the first border construction contract awarded by the Trump administration, aside from the eight prototypes for a new wall built near Otay Mesa last year.INTERACTIVE TIMELINE: President Trump's border wallThe president is expected to make a visit to view the prototypes sometime in March. While a federal judge sided with the Trump administration in a lawsuit against the wall by environmental groups and California, Trump tweeted California's portion of the wall is on hold until the entire wall is approved. 1749

CARLSBAD (KGTV) -- A San Diego couple is missing their cruise over coronavirus concerns after they say the cruise company changed the itinerary without a refund.Lisa and Luis Revilla are cruise ship connoisserus. They've sailed through the Greek Islands and along the Italian coast. Their next trip was supposed to be through the Pacific Islands on the Norwegian Jade. But, due to coronavirus concerns that ship set sail without them. RELATED: Second case of coronavirus confirmed in San Diego County"I don’t need to go and risk my life," said Lisa Revilla. "We were sailing from Singapore and were being dropped off in Hong Kong. Hong Kong in the end closed their port."So, Norwegian changed the itinerary to leave Singapore, spend time at sea and head back to Singapore. It also wouldn't be your typical trip. "They were gonna implement certain temperature gauges, every time we got off and got back on from every port we were traveling to," said Revilla. RELATED: Mislabeled sample led to release of San Diego coronavirus patientBut to get over there they were planning on flying from LAX to Hong Kong, but American Airlines canceled their flights. So, they couldn't have taken the cruise even if they tried. "Basically I'm out almost ,000 from this voyage we were going to take," said Revilla. "What if we’re quarantined and I cant get back to my job I mean who’s going to pay for that?"Norwegain sent us this statement:“We always strive to do right by our guests while maintaining the business policies and practices we have in place to help us manage through situations just like this. It is because of the very nature of unexpected situations that we strongly recommend that guests obtain travel protection insurance. As a convenience to our guests, we offer a few travel protection plans at the time of booking, as well as during several follow-up communications. The plans allow for coverage in many situations. Some plans offer guests the opportunity to cancel for any reason. In addition, as is common in the travel and tourism industry, we have developed cancellation policies. They are communicated to our guests at time of booking and can be found on our website here: https://www.ncl.com/sites/default/files/Guest_Ticket_Contract_04-2017_2.pdfRevilla told 10News they were traveling with another couple who even purchased insurance through Norwegian and were told it wouldn't apply here. "We’ve been saving our money for a whole year and planning this whole trip. And it just didn’t happen," said Revilla. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - At the ripe age of 74, scientist Wladek Minor, PhD. is not slowing down anytime soon, especially when it comes to his research to better understand COVID-19.“This is the biggest danger I’ve seen in my lifetime,” said Minor. “This is a real danger, and we shouldn’t underestimate it.”Minor, who is also a professor at UVA’s Department of Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics, recently made a new discovery in the fight against coronavirus. As the lead researcher, Minor and his team of scientists recently discovered a link between a coronavirus treatment and people with diabetes. They found the drug dexamethasone, which is used to lower the risk of death in patients with a severe case of the virus, might be less effective for treating patients with diabetes.“We were trying to explain why the action of dexamethasone is somewhat erratic,” Minor said. “It means it works for some people and [does] not necessarily work for other people.”Minor and his team analyzed data from 373 COVID-19 patients at a hospital from Wuhan, China.Their research determined how a type of protein in our blood, called serum albumin, picks up dexamethasone and carries it through the body. The scientists found that patients who died had lower levels of that protein than those who survived. Those who died also had higher levels of blood sugar, suggesting diabetes may make it difficult for patients to get the benefits of the drug.“We are trying to make as much impact on human life as possible,” said Minor.Dexamethasone has been shown to cut deaths by about 30% for COVID-19 patients who were on ventilators. The steroid was used to help treat President Donald Trump’s bout with the virus, along with other treatments and drugs including remdesivir, which was just approved by the FDA to use on all hospitalized patients.“COVID is now our enemy, and really, it’s the biggest enemy,” Minor said.Scientists said more research is needed to determine the best treatment for COVID-19 patients, especially for those who have diabetes. For more information on Minor’s research, click here. This story was first reported by Antoinette DelBel at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2180
