SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The latest water main break Sunday in the Midway District is the latest example of San Diego’s aging water system. But the city is working to fix the issue, replacing more than 100 miles of water transmission and distribution pipes.According to city documents, since 2013, San Diego spent 8 million to repair and replace 116 miles of water transmission and distribution pipes.A total of 72 miles of those repairs were on cast iron pipes, the oldest ones in the system. "We have more than 3,000 miles of pipeline," said department spokesperson Brent Eidson, "To do it properly, we're probably always going to be replacing pipes."Throughout the project, older pipes made from concrete or cast iron are being replaced with new PVC pipes. Edison says PVC is the industry standard. Pipes made from the material usually last between 50-75 years.The city says its water system extends more than 400 square miles and moves roughly 172 million gallons per day. Included in that area is 49 water pumping stations, 29 treated water storage facilities, three water treatment plants and more than 3,300 miles of pipelines.The city hopes to have all the cast iron distribution lines replaced by 2018-19. The goal is to have all the larger cast iron transmission mains replaced by 2023. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The first round of artists for San Diego’s Wonderfront music festival, supported by the star power of Tony Hawk, Trevor Hoffman, and Rob Machado, was announced Monday. The event will take place on seven stages in parks and on piers along the Port of San Diego, from South Embarcadero up to Broadway Pier. Wonderfront is scheduled for Nov. 22-24, 2019, the weekend before Thanksgiving. Wonderfront organizers plan to mix well-known stars with local favorites and emerging artists. “Our goal with this lineup was to have it stacked from start to finish each day with great artists. It’s hard to really call any certain bands our so-called headliners as so many lines of bands on this festival are all headliners in their own right,” said Wonderfront co-founder Paul Thornton. The first round of artists, announced Monday, include Miguel, Slightly Stoopid, Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals, MGMT, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Nicky Jam, Don Omar, Vince Staples, Tyga, Los Angeles Azules, Tucanes de Tijuana, Walk the Moon, Phantogram, X Ambassadors, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Lil Dicky, Big Gigantic, and Pennywise. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The father accused of causing a condo fire in Rancho Bernardo that killed his two children appeared in court Tuesday afternoon for a preliminary hearing.Henry Lopez is accused of passing out drunk with a lit cigarette, setting his condo on fire last October.His children, 10-year-old Cristos and 7-year-old Isabella, were in the home at the time and suffered smoke inhalation. Both children died as a result of their injuries.Lopez was also burned in the fire and hospitalized for some time.One witness told the court Tuesday he heard a female screaming at the scene, but the screaming stopped.RELATED: Father charged after children killed in fireHenry Lopez' ex-wife Nikia Lopez testified the two were in the midst of a divorce. They shared joint custody of their children.  Lopez told the judge her former husband was an abusive alcoholic.She claims she had warned him previously not to smoke in the house around the children."He drank a lot. My goal was to keep it from the kids.  I would wake up in the middle of the night and throw away the bottles in the trash. I would pull him upstairs before the kids woke in the morning... sometimes I would have to clean up his throw up."  He’s not in custody because his defense attorney says he needs to be out to receive medical treatment for the burns he sustained during the fire.Prosecutors believe the fire started in his bed and ultimately spread to the rest of the home.  Investigators found discarded smoking materials and alcohol near the start of the fire.If there’s enough evidence against Lopez and the case goes to trial, he faces up to 14 years in prison for several felony counts including involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment.Lopez is not charged with intentionally starting the fire. 1809

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Grinch is back yet again to steal Christmas from San Diego.The Old Globe Theatre's production of "Dr. Suess's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" returns to San Diego for its run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 24. Back for its 20th year, the holiday classic brings Whoville to the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in Balboa Park. The Grinch, played by Edward Watts, will embark on a quest to stop Christmas from gracing the town of Whoville, featuring the songs "This Time of Year," "Santa for a Day," and "Fah Who Doraze."RELATED: Holiday family fun around San Diego this seasonBut the action isn't just on the stage.On Sunday, Nov. 12, the show will kick off with the 12th annual tree lighting outside the Globe with a special performance by the cast for free.
