CORONADO - San Diego residents and visitors say they are feeling the psychological impacts of the falling stock market when it comes to their investing and spending. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped more than 650 points on Monday, its worst Christmas Eve performance ever. "My IRA is hurting," said James Adams, going to lunch in Coronado. "I can't really do too much. It's too late to move money around now so we just have to weather it and hope it goes back up."The Dow has dropped 15 percent in the last three weeks, pushed by political gridlock leading to a government shutdown, trade wars, amid rising interest rates. Alan Gin, an economist at the University of San Diego, said people tend to spend more when the stock market is doing well because they feel wealthier. However, the opposite happens when the market is on the downswing. Paul Aliu, visiting from Washington D.C., said it's scary for him to check his 401(k). He said he was reconsidering a trip to the Zoo after he found out the ticket was more than . "I'm watching every dollar and every penny that I spend," he said.Dennis Brewster, a San Diego financial adviser, said it's important to think long term and not panic. Selling now locks in any losses. "It's hard to keep your perspective when we're in the middle of these declines," he said. "I encourage people to keep a longer term view." 1379

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Warmer ocean temperatures are being blamed after 10 to 15 people were stung by stingrays along the beach in Coronado Tuesday afternoon. According to lifeguards, 10 to 15 people were stung by the creatures after 4 p.m. Lifeguards say ocean temperatures, which reached the mid 60s Tuesday, were to blame for the increase in stingray activity. Lifeguards added that, when ocean waters warm up, it’s common to see an increase in stingray activity, but it’s unusual to see so many stings in a single day. Crews placed purple flags along the shores of Coronado Tuesday to warn of the increase, but say tourists may not know about the dangers the rays pose. The flags can also be used to warn about other creatures, such as jellyfish in the water. The California round ray is known to feed in the shallows off the California coast. Officials say the stingrays lay partially buried in the sand while hunting, making them difficult to spot for unsuspecting beachgoers. The stingray’s barb is covered in venom and mucus that causes severe pain if it breaks the skin. To avoid stepping on the rays, lifeguards recommend shuffling your feet. If you do happen to be stung, below is a list of what you should do to treat the sting: 1. Stop the bleeding.2. Go to the nearest lifeguard.3. Soak foot in hot water to deactivate venom.4. Keep clean to prevent infection.Watch the video below for more on how to prevent stings: 1442

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) - A major makeover is underway at the Hotel del Coronado, and now the project is moving into phase two, which includes a new entrance. On Wednesday, hotel guests and the public will be able to use the hotel's new underground parking structure, which features 729 spots. For the next two years, guests will enter the hotel from the north side, as the main entrance is redesigned. The temporary entrance can be accessed from R.H. Dana Pl. The project will cost 0 million, a figure that's double the original estimate."To ensure that the Hotel Del is staying relevant with the times, but also that it's here for another 130 years," said Nick OrRico, the resort manager. OrRico says they've been working diligently to enhance the guest experience while construction is underway. After the popular restaurant Sun Deck closed for construction, the hotel created an alternative eatery on the beach with a food truck. "We are still looking for ways to build unique experiences for guests, so they still want to come over here and experience our beautiful beach," said OrRico. Holiday traditions will continue despite renovations, including Skating by the Sea, which kicks off this Friday. For Thanksgiving, the Hotel Del is expecting close to 3,000 guests for dinner in the Crown Room and Ball Room, plus more in the restaurants. On Christmas Eve, they'll serve 500 guests in the Crown Room. And on Christmas Day, they're expecting 2,000 in the Crown Room and Ball Room. The renovation project is expected to be completed in December 2021. 1563

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Coronado officials warned beachgoers of two shark sightings on Sunday, almost 10 days following four other sightings. The city posted on Facebook that two white shark sightings occurred off South Beach at 9:10 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Officials added that a local surfer who reported the second sighting said the shark was possibly longer than 10 feet and seen about 50 yards offshore. Both sightings occurred near Tower 1C at Avenida de las Arenas, and the shark did not show any engaging behavior. COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa - After seven long months of dealing with the pandemic, it's easy to assume that the general population is growing tired of COVID-19. The mental strain has been non-stop and now seasonal depression is expected to add to those stresses."There is one word that I would say now, it is fatigue,” said Douglas County Health Director Adi Pour about how people are feeling regarding the pandemic. “There is no question, the public is fatigued."Mental health experts worry that seasonal depression will only add to the already prevalent pandemic-related stresses."It just multiplies it, it stacks,” said CHI Health Mental Health Therapist Tim Hron.Seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder, has to do with changes in serotonin levels in the colder months, directly affecting your mood. It's a condition that affects about five percent of adults in the U.S. and typically lasts about 40 percent of the year."It can present itself with fatigue, depressed mood, some of those other typical symptoms of depression but just more in that seasonal time frame," said Hron.Hron also says it's important to reach out for help if your symptoms last longer than two weeks. Connection with friends and family is also important during this time, and self-care is key."Make sure you're eating healthy, you're staying hydrated...maybe start a new hobby," he said. It's important to stay vigilant and hopeful during the pandemic, ask for help when necessary, and get plenty of rest. This story was first reported by Ruta Ulcinaite at KMTV in Council Bluffs, Iowa. 1575
