The department has struggled to recruit and retain officers due to the city’s high cost of living and a pay scale that’s lower than competing police departments. A San Diego Police officer earns a starting salary of ,000 a year. Late last year, the City Council approved a series of salary increases of up to 25 percent through 2020. The San Diego Police Department currently has about 1,860 officers, which is about 180 short of its staffing goal. Chief David Nisleit said Tuesday that SDPD recently lost two officers to Chula Vista, whose entry level officers earn about ,000 a year. “What I’m looking for is to hire experienced law enforcement officers from other areas,” he said. "To make us competitive we had to offer a signing bonus to have them come over.”A lateral police officer - one moving from another department - would earn ,000 upon hire, then another ,000 after training, and the final ,000 after one year of continuous employment. The latest report of vandalism came Thursday at a string of businesses in Mission Hills along the 4000 block of Pacific Highway. Pictures of the area show holes in glass and workers boarding up large windows damaged by the vandals. Wednesday night, police sent out a news release stating the suspects are believed to have fired BB gun pellets, causing damage to vehicle windows or store windows. Previous incidents were reported between June 24 and July 8 in the late evening and early morning hours. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Caltrans is warning drivers that a portion of northbound SR-125 will close Sunday.According to Caltrans, northbound SR-125 will close from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. between SR-905 and Birch Road.The north and southbound shoulder bike lane between SR-905 and Birch Road will also close between the same hours.According to Caltrans, the closure is for the testing of new technology, though the agency didn’t specify what technology it will be testing. 468
