French President Emmanuel Macron told France's overseas ambassadors gathered in Paris on Monday that Europe can "no longer rely" upon the US for its security."It is up to us today to take our responsibilities and guarantee our own security, and thus have European sovereignty," Macron said.Since his election in 2016, US President Donald Trump has been distancing himself from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, challenging a post-World War Two consensus on peace and security in Europe.Macron said he wanted to see a complete rethink of how Europe defends itself in the future."I want us to launch an exhaustive review of our security with all Europe's partners, which includes Russia," he added.Macron's call for greater European military cooperation echoes recent comments by German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.Writing in the Handelsblatt newspaper, Maas called last week for Europe to "take an equal share of the responsibility" and "form a counterweight" to Washington as Europe-US relations cool, AFP reported. The French President was also critical of the European Union, saying "we are paying the price of several decades of a weakened Europe," adding that efforts must be redoubled.Turning to Syria, Macron said showing support for President Bashar al-Assad would be a "grave mistake," but the sovereignty of the country should be respected "by allowing the Syrian people to express themselves." 1416

FORTVILLE, Ind. — A central Indiana superintendent gave students some fun "assignments" to complete on the first snow day of the year. With the institution of virtual learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, many families thought snow days to be a thing of the past for students. But when snowfall led to messy roads across parts of Indiana, there were still several dozen schools that chose to either delay or cancel classes.Dr. Jack Parker, Superintendent at Mt. Vernon Community School Corporation sent a letter to parents canceling in-person learning in favor of virtual learning — but not the type of virtual learning typically seen amid the pandemic. The note to parents went on to give two assignments that included playing in the snow and throwing snowballs."Students will use the scientific process in planning appropriate clothing to remain warm and dry while spending time outside. Once the hypothesis has been identified, and appropriate attire has been secured, students will be expected to test their theory by going outdoors and playing in the snow," Parker's note read. "Step two of this assignment will be to practice the skills of estimation and measurement when throwing snowballs at one another while maintaining a minimum of 6' of distance with others outside of your household. When being with said snowball, students are expected to practice their social skills and to use their good words."He even gave students a chance to earn some extra credit. "Extra credit can be earned by helping to shovel sidewalks and/or driveways," Parker wrote. And of course, students who aren't feeling well were given an alternate assignment to complete."Students who are not feeling well will be expected to complete the alternative assignment of resting indoors and drinking plenty of fluids," the letter read. 1822

For the first time, the Oxford English Dictionary has released several words for its annual "Word of the Year" because it's 2020. With everything that has happened this year, the dictionary said it selected words that saw significant spikes in searches during certain months. On Monday, the dictionary released its "Words of an Unprecedented Year" report saying that 2020 was "not a year that could neatly be accommodated in one single "word of the year," so they came up with words that saw spikes in searches during certain months."For January, the word was "bushfire" because of Australia's worst bushfire season on record."Impeachment" also was influential in January because that's when President Donald Trump's impeachment trial began. In February, "acquittal" peaked since that's when President Trump's impeachment trial ended. In March, words about the coronavirus pandemic dominated, like "COVID-19," "lockdown," "social distancing," and "reopening."In June, it was the phrase "Black Lives Matter."For August, it was "mail-in" because of the U.S. election and "Belarusian" because of the re-election of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. In September, it was "moonshot," which was the name of the United Kingdom's government COVID testing program. And in October, "superspreader" spiked due to the spread of COVID-19 cases within the White House and "net-zero," which pertains to China President Xi Jinping pledging the country would be carbon neutral by 2060. 1480

Former President Barack Obama responded to a call from President Donald Trump to indict him. In a podcast released Wednesday evening hosted by former Obama administration official Tommy Vietor, Obama called the claim “absurd.” “The allegations are so absurd that even Republican controlled committees looking into it have dismissed them,” Obama said. “And, you know. Attorney General Barr has dismissed them.” “Unless Bill Barr indicts these people for crimes, the greatest political crime in the history of our country, then we’re going to get little satisfaction unless I win and we’ll just have to go, because I won’t forget it,” Trump said during a Fox News interview last week.On Tuesday, the Department of Justice dropped an investigation after finding no wrongdoing involving the unmasking of classified documents during the Obama administration. Unmasking is a process for government officials to request to learn the identity of people involved in intelligence probes. Obama said Republicans should be doing more to protect government institutions.“I’m disappointed that Republicans who know better have not checked him on this,” Obama said. “And I think on a very important question after the election, even if it goes well with Joe Biden, is whether you start seeing the Republican Party restore some sense of ‘here are norms that we can’t breach’ because he’s breached all of them and they have not said to him, ‘this is too far.’” 1451
