(KGTV) – Escondido Police have released bodycam footage of an officer-involved shooting that left one man hospitalized last month.EPD says the incident started with a 911 call about a restraining order violation at about 3:30 a.m. on Broadway near Washington Avenue on June 19. In the call, a woman said her former husband, 44-year-old Rosendo Sandoval Quezada, was at her home and she identified his vehicle.Officers were initially called to a home in the 300 block of Park Avenue, but an officer spotted Quezada's reported vehicle near Broadway, where he pulled him over.The full incident video can be viewed here.Police say Quezada exited his vehicle holding a 3-foot-long crowbar and ran toward the officer, identified as "Officer Hamilton." The officer said Quezada was yelling something similar to "just kill me, I want to die" as he charged him.Police say the officer continued to tell Quezada to stop before he fired one round from his service weapon when he came within a few feet of him. Quezada reportedly paused and continued toward the officer, police say.The officer attempted to fire a second round, but his gun malfunctioned, according to police. The officer didn't activate his body-worn camera until after he fired the rounds, police said, after saying the officer's camera was active during the shooting.A nearby Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent who was filling out paperwork in his vehicle witnessed the event unfold and assisted in the arrest, according to police.Quezada was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.EPD Chief Ed Varso said an investigation into the shooting is currently underway by the department's crimes of violence unit and an independent review of the case will be conducted by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, U.S. Attorney's Office, and FBI.An internal review will also be completed, Varso said. 2280

(KGTV) - Escondido Police arrested a pastor who allegedly molested a young girl, authorities announced Friday afternoon.John Rodgers McFarland was taken into custody on Dec. 18 by the Escondido Police Department. The arrest occurred in Fullerton, where McFarland lived and worked. Escondido Police say the alleged incident happened in Escondido several years ago while McFarland was visiting family in the area.He has been charged with two counts of lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14. Since 2014, McFarland has been the head pastor at Orangethorpe United Methodist Church in Fullerton, according to the Fountain Valley Police Department. Before that, he had served as the head of Fountain Valley United Methodist church since 1988. He also was a pastor at Surf City Church in Huntington Beach from 2009 to 2014. According to the Fountain Valley Police Department, there may be other victims abused during his time in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach. ESCONDIDO — When Greg Spence talks board games, he isn't referring to your Yahtzee's or Scrabbles.The board games he's passionate about can take hours to play - think Settlers of Catan, Spirit Island, or Sagrada.“There are so many games out there that get deep into different genres and strategies and tactics that are so much fun,” he said. “You can get lost in the variety of board games.”The problem Spence discovered with in-depth games, however, is they have dozens of pieces and can even take half-an-hour to set up.That's why in 2013, he launched the company called The Broken Token - which helps gamers organize pieces. Their products include levels of wooden trays, often marked for different kinds of game pieces.The Broken Token did so well that Spence quit his day job and opened a manufacturing space in Escondido. He's now selling internationally.But last year, he almost left California for Missouri or Indiana, states that would offer more distribution flexibility and are closer to conventions. The states are also lower cost than California, which has some of the highest taxes in the nation.“We didn't want to leave, but we were trying to make the best decision for the company,” Spence said.But instead, he got in touch with the group Innovate 78, a collection of city economic officials that pointed him in the direction of a California Competes tax credit. (KGTV) - A grateful family is speaking out after a Camp Pendleton Marine helped save their trapped baby as flames engulfed their car.Two Mondays ago, Tony Hurley, his wife and 1-year-old daughter were in their car on East Mission Road, on their way to a relative's home, around 5 p.m. Hurley says a gas can fell off a truck in front of him. Fire officials say it became wedged under the engine, leading to sparks as it dragged on the road."Almost like a firework going off ... As we pulled over, the car is already on fire. Flames were surrounding the perimeter of car," said Hurley.A frantic Hurley, along with his wife, got out and went to the back seat to get their daughter, but he says the latching mechanism for the car seat base was stuck."That's when I look up, and I'm face to face with a Marine on the other side of the car," said Hurley.That Marine was Gunnery Sergeant Kyle Wetter, who just happened to be driving by."At that point is when I used my pocketknife to cut the car seat belt that was holding the baby's seat int the car, so the dad could get the car seat out," said Wetter in a video interview released by the Marine Corps.As the family scrambled to safety, Wetter grabbed their belongings out of the car before also getting to safety. About a minute later, three different explosions rocked the car. After a few more minutes, flames had consumed the car."I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened if he hadn’t been on scene," said Hurley.Hurley says the Marine's efforts ended with the best Christmas gift ever: his family was alive and well."He's definitely a hero in my book, and I'm more than grateful," said Hurley."It's what I expect any person to do in that moment, is to help someone in need. I don't think I'm special by no means. (KGTV) -- The Escondido Union School District Thursday confirmed two people at Mission Middle School tested positive for coronavirus.District officials were notified Tuesday of the positive tests, and officials noted the cases were separate and not related."In an abundance of caution and in alignment with guidance from the San Diego County public health department, all students and staff members who were determined to be potential close contacts with either individual were notified immediately, and were advised to begin a 14-day quarantine", said district spokeswoman Michelle Breier.According to the district, the quarantine includes 25 students, five teachers, and three classroom aides.Under Escondido Union’s hybrid model, some students returned for in-person classes in late September.The district has implemented health and safety measures for students and staff, including limiting class sizes, enforcing social distancing, requiring face masks, conducting health screenings, and swift contact tracing following notification of a positive test.Escondido Union School District is a preschool-grade eight elementary district that is entirely separate from the high school district.
