SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After 14 months on the job, Gordon Walker, the CEO of the Regional Task Force on the Homeless is taking a six month leave to help open a temple for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Rome, Italy.Walker was hired in June of 2017 after successfully reducing the homeless population in Utah by 91%.“We can do the exact same thing here,” he told 10News. “The chronic homeless problem here in San Diego is not much larger that it was in Utah.”He took over the RTFH just after it had been consolidated with several other agencies.One of his first big projects was overhauling an outdated software system that is used by many different agencies that interact with the homeless.Expected to be launched in December, he says the new program will allow for easier and more streamlined data collection.It’s an important change because they can’t fight a problem when they don’t know exactly what it consists of.“We had a hard time answering some very basic questions, like ‘what do we actually need?’ “For this purpose, one of the task force’s yearly projects is executing a ‘point-in-time’ count of homeless people across the county.When the numbers were released this year, however, they were met with criticism.“You cant just not count 1000 to 2000 people just because you haven’t done your due diligence when we’ve counted them every year,” said Michael McConnell, a homeless advocate and former member of the RTFH.He’s referring to the homeless population that live in vehicles.Because they were not included in the 2018 count of unsheltered homeless, the number appeared to decline from the previous year.Walker still defends their decision, saying “here in San Diego there was a great deal of effort of counting people in vehicles without proving or showing that there was anyone living in the vehicle.”But he said they plan on changing that next year by performing outreach beforehand, so when they encounter vehicles while doing the count they know who lives inside them.“We are going to do more interviewing so we know the people better,” he said.Whether or not he will be back to see that through remains to be seen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego Police officer shot an aggressive dog while responding to a domestic violence call Monday afternoon, police say.According to police, the incident happened on the 4200 block of Colina Del Sol around 3 p.m.While responding to the call, the dog reportedly attacked and bit the officer, who then shot the dog.Police say the officer received medical attention at the scene. It’s not clear of the dog survived.No other injuries were reported. 476

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A suspect was arrested Sunday morning after reportedly stealing someone’s car and stabbing the owner who tried to prevent the theft.According to police, the incident happened around 9:10 a.m. on the 2800 block of Jarvis Street in Point Loma.When the owner of the car tried to stop the man, the suspect stabbed the victim. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman is dead after a shooting in the Skyline area, Saturday afternoon. San Diego Police detectives said around 5:30 pm, two cars were traveling northbound on Meadowbrook Drive. Both drivers stopped at the red light at Skyline Drive. Then, the passengers got into an argument. "Our victim got out of the second vehicle and approached the front vehicle on the passenger side," Homicide Lt. Matt Dobbs said. "Witnesses heard a gunshot and saw the female stumble away."</p>VIDEO REPORT: Man pleads not guilty in Skyline road-rage slaying of young momResponding officers found the 27-year-old woman, later identified as Sylvanita Widman, suffering from a gunshot wound. The shooter drove off. “She was transported by paramedics to a local hospital," Lt. Dobbs said. "Unfortunately, she died at around 6:28 this evening.”Investigators said Widman's driver was cooperative. Meanwhile, the motive of the shooting remains unknown. Police describe the shooter as a Black man in his 20's, driving a black Mercedes Benz. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman says she tried to save the life of a man found dead under a bridge this morning. He was released from the hospital just hours before police found his body in Hillcrest. There was something about a man at the hospital that stood out to Megen Murray. "For whatever reason, I don't know why he caught my eye," said Murray. "I just watched the orderly wheel him outside."He was discharged from Scripps Mercy Hospital Wednesday night. He was still wearing a hospital gown when he was found."It was just unnatural to see a man in a hospital gown, in a wheelchair, sitting on the street."Murray says she tried to get the hospital to help, but she says they wouldn't listen. "Yep, he's homeless, he has nowhere to go, we dismissed him, if he wants he can come back in and be seen again but that was it," said Murray.She then took it upon herself to make him comfortable. "I said, 'I have these blankets for you,' and he looked at me and gave me the biggest smile. And then I said, 'I only have  cash on me, so here's .' I told him to put it in his pocket and said 'I'm sorry I cant do more."'The hospital told 10News the man was healthy enough to be released and aware of his surroundings. Seven hours later he was found dead after tumbling from the Washington Street bridge. And it's not the first time a patient was discharged in hospital clothes. A video from Baltimore went viral in January that showed a woman, wobbling and confused, still wearing a gown and surgical mask. Homeless patients are often discharged after being treated with nowhere to go. "We have to see these people as people. They're people. It just ripped me to the core.
