LANZHOU/BEICHUAN, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- After living through major tragedies, such as the Wenchuan Earthquake that claimed over 68,000 lives and the Zhouqu mudslides that left 1,400 dead, the new semester starting Wednesday may bring a much-needed sense of normality to the affected students.Senior high schoolers of the mudslides-hit Zhouqu County, northwest China's Gansu Province, began a new semester on a usual date, Sept. 1, which is the first day of school in many parts of China, but at a place 400 km south of Zhouqu, the provincial capital of Lanzhou.After the county was hit by massive mudslides on Aug. 8, two primary schools were damaged and high schools are now being used by these pupils. So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. There is even a bathroom in our dorm," said Qiao Qi, a senior high student at Beichuan.The new school, covering an area of 15 hectares, can accommodate 5,200 students. LISBON, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao concluded his state visit to Portugal on Sunday and has left the Portuguese capital of Lisbon for home.The president arrived in Lisbon on Saturday after a three-day state visit to France that began on Thursday.In Lisbon, Hu had talks with Portuguese President Anibal Cavaco Silva and met other Portuguese leaders, exchanging views on how to deepen bilateral pragmatic cooperation. BEIJING, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- China's safety record has improved in the first nine months of 2010 with fewer accidents and deaths compared with one year ago, Luo Lin, director of the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS), said Wednesday.From January to September this year, China reported 16,091 fewer accidents, or a decline of 5.8 percent over the previous year, while deaths caused by accidents were down by 5,869 in the same period, Luo said during a a national video conference regarding the country's work safety record.While Luo did not provide the actual figures of accidents or deaths caused during this period, he said: "Though we have made new progress in work safety, the total number of accidents is still too high and the accidents with heavy casualties and caused by illegal production activities were rising dramatically."According to SAWS, China's work safety death ratio per 100 million yuan (14.9 million U.S. dollars) of gross domestic product (GDP) was down 18.6 percent year on year to 0.21 during the January-September period. In other words, every 10 billion yuan of China's GDP will cause 21 deaths in the process of production.In addition, the death ratio per million tonne of coal output dropped 13.3 percent to 0.78 in the same period.According to the last figures released by SAWS in July, workplace accidents had killed 33,876 people in the first half of this year.

ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao arrived here Saturday, kicking off his three-day official visit to Greece.The Greece visit, the first stop of Wen's four-nation Europe tour, is the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.During his stay, Premier Wen is due to meet Greek President Karolos Papoulias and Parliament Speaker Philippos Petsalnikos and hold talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou before witnessing the signing of a series of deals. Wen will also deliver a speech in the Greek parliament on China-Greece and China-EU relations."Coping with the financial crisis will be an important topic for talks between Wen and Greek leaders. We have a positive attitude about the measures taken by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund," Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying said earlier on Wen's Greece visit. Greece's sovereign debt crisis triggered fears of a domino effect across the eurozone earlier this year."We have noticed that the Greek government has adopted measures which have been effective.
