BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President and member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau Xi Jinping Friday conferred certificates on graduates of the Party School of the CPC Central Committee.     Xi, also a member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, heads the school.     Politburo member and director of the CPC Central Committee Organization Department Li Yuanchao and Ling Jihua, director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee, both members of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, also attended the graduation ceremony.     The ceremony marked the graduation of 577 Party officials from the Central Party School and more than 2,600 graduates from the school's branches.     The Party School of the CPC Central Committee is the highest institution for training high- and middle-ranking party officials and Maxist theoreticians. The School's history dates back to the school of Marxism and Communism set up in March 1933.

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Diplomats of China and the United States on Friday met in Beijing to discuss issues concerning central and south Asia.     China's Vice Foreign Minister Li Hui and Assistant Foreign Minister Hu Zhengyue respectively held consultations with U.S. Assistant Secretary for South Asian Affairs Richard Boucher, according to a statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry.     The consultations went on under the framework of China-U.S. Strategic Dialogue, which was initiated in 2005.     Both sides introduced their views and policy objectives on central and south Asia and pledged to continue consultations and coordination as a way of promoting peace, stability and development in those regions.

Li Changchun (C), member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, addresses a national conference on publicity in Beijing, capital of Beijing, Jan. 4, 2009.    Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the call at a national conference on publicity which was held here from Jan. 4-5.     He called for efforts to create an active and healthy environment to maintain social stability.     He also urged the building of a "socialist core value system" that may consolidate the ideological basis for people from all ethnic groups.     Li called for a reformative, scientific and innovative spirit in publicity and cultural work.

  

Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), presides over the 15th meeting of the chairman and vice-chairpersons of the 11th NPC Standing Committee, in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 15, 2008.     BEIJING, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislators on Monday approved the Ministry of Finance to expend "a certain amount" of fund in advance before the central budget is reviewed and approved next spring.     The chairman and vice-chairpersons of National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee made the decision at their meeting here Monday, said a statement issued after the meeting presided by Wu Bangguo, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee.     The statement did not reveal the exact number of the fund.     "In face of serious challenges from domestic and international market, the government has carefully adjusted the macroeconomic policies," the statement said. "The new moves were proved to be correct and effective."     The central budget is supposed to be discussed at the NPC annual session in next March. BEIJING, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) issued a Chair's Statement here on Saturday, agreeing to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The statement said the leaders held extensive and in-depth discussions on issues of realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as well as the sustainable development targets agreed in Johannesburg, strengthening energy security cooperation, jointly addressing the challenge of climate change, and environmental protection, including water resources, forests and air, and improving social cohesion under the framework of sustainable development.     Leaders stressed the importance of mid-term review of the MDGs, and underscored the need for ASEM members to further deepen international development cooperation to meet the IADGs, particularly the MDGs, in a timely manner.     Leaders expressed their support for strengthened international cooperation on climate change that could help assess impacts and vulnerabilities, build adaptive capacities, and support adaptation actions.     Leaders also emphasized the need for the sustainable management of forest and ocean as well as other territorial, coastal and marine ecosystems.     Leaders stressed the need to focus on development needs and environmental sustainability in the energy sector. They emphasized the need for Asia-Europe cooperation to ensure the availability of environmentally sound energy at a reasonable price to support economic growth and that the latest technology should be intended to increase energy efficiency.     Leaders recognized that the impact of globalization is increasingly being felt by the people of ASEM members, and share a common interest in strengthening the social dimension of globalization and improving social cohesion.     To this end, leaders unanimously agreed to issue the Beijing Declaration on Sustainable Development.     The Seventh Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM 7) was held in Beijing on 24 and 25 October 2008. The Meeting was the first gathering of the leaders of 45 members of ASEM since its second round of enlargement.
