SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- This Christmas local chefs and volunteers gave the gift of gourmet meals for those in need. It was a two day process. “Just Call Us” Volunteers prepared the food, from scratch, before serving it to the homeless. The volunteers made enough to feed over 400 people. Early this afternoon, the chefs and volunteers delivered the food to three different shelters. The largest being the Alpha Project tent, in Downtown. “We all appreciate it. They all deserve a good meal,” says a staff member with the Alpha Project. Over a dozen volunteers donated their time at the Alpha Project. More volunteers visited Rachel’s Women’s Shelter and San Diego Center for Children. All of the items are donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Market. (KGTV) - An alleyway in Hillcrest has transformed from dark and dirty to a work of art, and the revision isn’t complete yet.Patric Stillman is the owner of The Studio Door, an art gallery positioned in front of the alleyway. He said artists have been adding their work to the walls of the alleyway and it’s now grown into its own gallery that they’ve dubbed “mural alley.”“This was a pretty grungy space and over the past year we’ve been able to bring in some remarkable local muralists,” said Stillman.While artists continue to work on blank walls in the area, the Hillcrest Business Association is stepping in to take the space to the next level. Benjamin Nicholls, the Hillcrest Business Association Executive Director, said they’re asking the community for donations to fund-raise and add string lights that zig zag across the top of the alleyway.“Hillcrest mural alley is going to become a destination and it’s going to be a creative community destination,” said Nicholls.Nicholls added that in a coronavirus era when activities are safest outdoors, they hope this space will become an outdoor entertainment and event area.Even without the addition of the lights, it’s already catching eyes. Mother daughter duo Brooke and Linda Castro said they were walking to lunch in Hillcrest and noticed the art, then changed their route to walk by it.“We saw this so we decided we needed to walk down the alley to see everything,” said Linda.They said they could envision the space with lights and would welcome the addition because it would highlight the art, but also bring a level of safety.“I think this would become a more popular area just because of the artwork and the lighting,” said Linda.Donations to the project can be made here. Nicholls said the light project will cost about ,500 and any leftover donations will be used to continue adding murals to blank walls in the area.For Stillman, the addition of the outdoor space behind his business is a welcome project during a stressful time.“I think that art always warms our hearts and for a community to have this space, I think is really important in these times that are so challenging,” said Stillman. 2189

SAN DIEGO -- A woman is on high alert after she says a six-foot-long rattlesnake nearly attacked her dog Friday.Willow, 20, says she let her small dog out just before 10 a.m. Friday in San Diego.According to the 20-year-old, the dog started running around when Willow noticed a snake. She quickly grabbed the dog and started running back inside.Firefighters responded and found the massive red diamond rattlesnake cozying up net to some rocks near a fence line.A firefighter was able to safely remove the snake with tongs. Crews say this rattlesnake is the largest they’ve ever seen.After being fed and taken care of by a 3rd party, the snake will be released into the wild. 697

SAN DIEGO, CA (KGTV) - Four students have tested positive for COVID-19 in the Del Mar Union School District (DMUSD).The district has since launched a dashboard on its website to inform the school community about any active cases at each school.“We’re just being very transparent and keeping families informed,” said Jenni Huh, the Director of Student Services for DMUSD.Two students tested positive for COVID-19 at Sage Canyon School, one student tested positive at Sycamore Ridge School, and another student tested positive at Torrey Hills School.“We received the results directly from the families, and we were able to respond very quickly,” said Huh. “I’m very happy to say that they are doing very well, and we have not had any other cases.”Huh said all students and staff who came in contacted with those who tested positive are quarantined for 14 days.“If we learned of a presumed positive case, we would treat it exactly as the same way that we would respond to a confirmed positive,” she added.Parents are also notified if their child was potentially exposed to someone who possibly came in contact with someone who tested positive.At Sage Canyon, parents learned of the two positive COVID-19 cases over the weekend.By Monday, students in the two impacted classrooms were able to transition back to online learning.They will continue online learning during the two-week quarantine.DMUSD Superintendent Holly McClurg said district officials developed a Safe Reopening Plan over the summer to respond to these situations. She said the methods worked as expected.“To see children not miss a beat with their instruction has been great,” she said.While many parents may still have concerns sending their children off to school knowing this could happen at any moment, McClurg said the district’s goal is to be transparent and work with families to make the transition back to in-person learning go as smoothly as possible. 1933

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- California wildlife regulators have postponed the start of the commercial Dungeness crab season to protect whales and sea turtles from becoming entangled in fishing gear.The Department of Fish and Wildlife announced Wednesday that it's pushing back the Nov. 15 start of the season to Dec. 1. The postponement affects fishing zones from Mendocino County north of San Francisco to the Mexican border.The San Francisco Chronicle says 50 humpback whales were spotted in one week last month off the coast of San Francisco and another 25 in the Monterey Bay area.The recreational fishing season will be allowed to open on Saturday. 655
