ASHGABAT, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao met here on Sunday with Uzbek President Islam Karimov to exchange views on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern, and both leaders agreed to push forward bilateral ties. It is a common responsibility of all countries concerned, including China and Uzbekistan, to combat the "three forces" that engage in terrorism, separatism and extremism, and to safeguard the security and stability of the area, he said.     China is willing to consolidate contacts and cooperation with Uzbek law enforcement authorities and security departments to safeguard the national and regional stability, he said.     With the efforts of its member states, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has been striving to offset the negative impacts brought by changes in international and regional affairs. The entity has exerted an important role in promoting the stability of the Central Asian region and safeguarding the common interests of the member states, Hu said.     As the rotating chair state of the SCO, Uzbekistan has actively coordinated the body's development and made a series of significant proposals, Hu said, and such efforts were highly valued and readily bolstered by the Chinese side. China is also obliged and ready to assist Uzbekistan in the hosting of the SCO summit next year, Hu said.     Karimov, on his part, said the development of bilateral relations is not only conducive to the two countries, but is also of great significance to maintaining peace and stability in the Central Asian region.     He said China is a most reliable and trust-worthy friend of Uzbekistan. Since the heads of state of the two countries met in Yekaterinburg in Russia earlier this year, bilateral practical cooperation have made substantial progress and entered a new era of development, and bilateral trade has grown rapidly, with a broad prospect of cooperation in the areas of natural gas, mining and cotton.     Karimov said, in response to the worsening of the international financial crisis, the Chinese government has adopted a series of effective measures to resolve the difficulties faced by China's economy and played an important role in promoting the growth of the world economy.     He said, against the backdrop of profound and complicated changes in today's world, Uzbekistan is ready to strengthen cooperation with China in various fields. BEIJING, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao is to meet his U.S. counterpart President Barack Obama Tuesday morning at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.     The summit meeting is scheduled to be held at 10:40 a.m. after a grand welcoming ceremony. The two leaders will meet the press after the talks.     Wu Bangguo, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, will meet President Obama Tuesday afternoon.     President Obama will also visit the Palace Museum, or the Forbidden City, and attend a state banquet in his honor hosted by President Hu.

BEIJING, Oct. 26 -- Shanghai has applied to regulators to launch a free exchange between the yuan and the New Taiwan dollar to enhance financial cooperation, the head of the Shanghai Financial Service Office said Sunday.     "With growing trade between Shanghai and Taiwan in recent years, we hope that a free exchange between the yuan and the New Taiwan dollar can be conducted in Shanghai as a trial," said Fang Xinghai at the 6th China International Finance Forum.     "We have applied to the regulators and expect it will be approved soon," Fang said at the two-day forum which ended Sunday.     Shanghai has recently launched a cross-border currency clearing system and Fang expects that it will be extended to Taiwan soon.     By the end of April, Taiwan had invested 5 billion U.S. dollars in more than 6,000 projects in Shanghai, and trade between the two sides totaled 13.68 billion dollars in the first eight months of this year.     Although the two sides must overcome some barriers in financial cooperation, Fang said they can explore possibilities in innovative products, such as exchange-traded funds that enable investors to buy or sell shares in an entire benchmark portfolio.     "The Shanghai Stock Exchange is making efforts to introduce ETFs based on overseas equity indices (and) we can also expect Taiwan and the mainland to introduce ETFs based on each other's index," Fang said.     The two sides can also cooperate in sectors that are not directly supervised by the central government, such as venture capital.     "Taiwan is very successful in the venture capital sector, while the Chinese mainland is still in the first stage. Policies have now been eased so that Taiwan VC firms can set up branches on the mainland," Fang noted.     The Chinese mainland and Taiwan in April sealed a cooperative financial regulatory mechanism.

BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Monday hoped China and Germany would increase mutually-beneficial cooperation in various fields to promote bilateral relations.     "China and Germany are highly complementary in economy and share great potential for cooperation," Wang told visiting German Federal Minister of Economics and Technology Rainer Bruederle.     Hailing the China-Germany 37-year diplomatic relations, Wang said the two nations had witnessed frequent high-level exchanges and increased cooperation in economy, trade, investment, science, technology, culture and other fields.     China was in a period which witnessed accelerated industrialization and urbanization, Wang said. COPENHAGEN, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- China on Friday urged the rich nations negotiating in the UN-led climate talks in Copenhagen to help seal a deal by delivering on their promises to cut carbon emissions and provide financial support to help developing nations adapt to global warming.The call comes as ministers arrive for the higher segment of the talks that are tasked with achieving goals to avoid irreversible change in climate that scientists warn could be disastrous to the Earth. China's Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei said he hoped for a "balanced outcome" of the UN climate change conference.     He was speaking at a press conference hours after a draft text for the Copenhage talks emerged. "The final document we're going to adopt needs to be taking into account the needs and aspirations of all countries," particularly the most vulnerable ones, he said.     Under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, developed nations are committed to quantified emission reduction targets and provision of support in financing, technology and capacity building to developing nations. The Chinese minister said climate change is "a matter of survival" for developing nations.     Developing nations are asking the rich nations to up their emissions reduction targets and financial pledges, saying they failed to fulfil their obligations under the convention.     The call for funding was partly answered earlier on Friday with European Union leaders pledging 2.4 billion euros (3.5 billion U.S. dollars) annually from 2010 to 2012 to help developing countries tackle global warming.     Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the 27-nation bloc, said in Brussels that the bloc has made satisfactory contributions to helping the poorest countries combat climate change.     Developing nations still view the pledge as a far cry from their needs.     The issue of financial support is "extremely important" as developing nations are "worst hit" by climate change, he said.     He questioned the "sincerity" of developed nations in their commitment as only short-term funding, such as a three-year target, was being proposed.     The key to the success of the Copenhagen talks is for developed countries to keep their promises, he said.     "I would urge all leaders from developed countries to keep their promises, to have the future of humanity in their minds, especially the large population out there in the developing world," he said.     He also said China has "a responsible and pragmatic vision" for tackling climate change and will do its share in the global combat against climate change.     China last month announced it would reduce the intensity of carbon emissions per unit of its GDP in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent against 2005 levels.     Responding to rich nations' concern over transparency of China's voluntary action, he said plans for action would go through China's own legal process and there would be a regime of monitoring, verification and statistical supervision domestically to ensure transparency.     "We're also willing to increase transparency by announcing the results of our action in reports coming out of China," he said.
