LARGO, Florida — In the span of about 10 minutes, jurors in the sentencing trial of convicted cop killer Marco Parilla handed down two sentences. Only one was correct. And, it isn't what family members of fallen Tarpon Springs, Florida Police Officer Charles Kondek were hoping for.The jury had supposedly unanimously decided death was the appropriate penalty, but then the judge noticed some numbers scribbled out on the forms and asked the jury to go back and confirm all 12 jurors agreed on death.  Upon their return to the courtroom, the jury came back with a verdict of life in prison, as only 10 jurors voted for the death penalty and two for life in prison. The judge, explaining to Kondek's family and friends that under a new Florida law, the decision to sentence someone to death must be unanimous. The jurors made a paperwork error filling out their verdict that led to the confusion.Kondek's widow Theresa couldn't believe an error was made."Relief, we felt like justice was served for Charlie. We waited three years for this and then to have it taken away that was a little tough," Kondek said. "It’s closure for us. Obviously, we wanted the death penalty."Kondek said this chapter of her life is over and all she wants to do is move forward and live a life that will honor her fallen husband. "No one wins. Either way, my husband will never come home," Kondek said.  Parilla was convicted of murdering Officer Charles Kondek of the Tarpon Springs Police Department back in 2014.On Thursday, Parilla told the family he was ashamed of what he did and tried to apologize to the fallen officer's family. After learning Parilla would not face the death penalty, family members told him in their victim impact statements that they hoped he died in prison sooner rather than later."You are an animal and I hope you die the worst death possible, a shiv across the neck or something," Charles Kondek, the fallen officer's father told Parilla. 2038

LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) - Researchers at UC San Diego have found a way to improve radar technology that can make self-driving cars safer."Our vision is to make self-driving cars much more safer than how we humans drive," says Dinesh Bharadia, an Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UC San Diego.Bharadia led a team of researchers working on ways to help autonomous vehicles see in bad weather.Currently, he says, self-driving cars rely on LiDAR, a light-based radar system. But it's performance is limited because it uses a low frequency that reflects in bad weather.Bharadia says his team tested wireless radar, which has a higher frequency wavelength and found it can rain and fog. However, the wireless radar's sight range is limited. So Bharadia's team built a system where five wireless radars work together to create a more full "view" of the road."From each radar's vantage point, you see something different," says Bharadia. "Those different things, observed from five different radars, gives you much more detailed aspect ratio of another car (on the road)."Bharadia says the combination of all five radars helps create a 3-D image of other objects on the road. That helps the car's self-driving system figure out how to avoid them."You need to know the exact aspect ratio of the other cars on the road," he says. "Only then can you drive around them if you need to."Bharadia says carmakers like Toyota and Honda have been helping with the research and development. He thinks this new technology could be on the road within 2-3 years."Radars are already out there," he says. "We just need to plug in our software to make the cars more autonomous..."It's a simple technology that can be widely deployed and used to make our roads safer for everyone."Bharadia and his team will present their findings at the Sensys Conference this week. For more information about the technology, see the full news release here. 1951

Last month's headlines read, '30-year-old man dies after attending COVID party thinking virus was a hoax.'"They are being very egocentric. They're not thinking about how their actions could affect other people," said Licensed Therapist Jaime Bronstein. She believes young people go to COVID parties either to be exposed because they fall into peer pressure or they truly believe the virus doesn't exist."They also don't have very strong impulse control. And that's because their prefrontal cortex is not fully developed. And it's not fully developed until they're 25 years old. And that's responsible for making the right and wrong decision," she explained.Bronstein says many attending these parties are young single men going through the 'Young Male Syndrome.'"They just love engaging in high-risk behavior such as high-speed driving, doing illicit drugs, doing the tide-pod challenge, the cinnamon challenge, and in this case, going to a COVID party," she said. Here in the Tampa Bay area, we've seen young people lining up outside local establishments without masks and not social distancing. So how can parents get their kids to realize, they're not invincible?"First sit down with your kids and have a discussion about decision making and consequences. And you want to be able to talk with your children, not to them. You want them to feel seen and heard and you really want to listen to them," she said. And if you have adult friends not following CDC guidelines? This social worker recommends going into the conversation without any judgment."You don't want the other person to feel defensive. And basically just go in with compassion. I care about you. I don't want anything bad to happen to you," she said.Bronstein gives advice on how to better handle the stress of this pandemic on her website: www.therelationshipexpert.com.She also has a blog and a radio show, where she gives advice on other mental health issues, which are also on her website. This story was first reported by Wendy Ryan at WFTS in Tampa Bay, Florida. 2036

LAS VEGAS — A doctor in Reno is pushing back against President Donald Trump's false claim that his photo of an overflow site set up in his hospital's paring garage that was necessitated by a surge in COVID-19 cases is "fake."Last week, Dr. Jacob Keeperman, an emergency medicine specialist who works at Renown Hospital in Nevada, posted a selfie that showed him working in the hospital's parking garage. With cases of the coronavirus spiking in the city, the hospital was forced to repurposes the garage into additional hospital space in order to treat patients."I want to thank all the incredible staff who are Fighting the Good Fight to help all those suffering from COVID-19," Keeperman wrote. "With 5 deaths in the last 32 hours, everyone is struggling to keep their head-up. Stay strong." 801
