American Airlines now won't use its fleet of Boeing 737 Max planes any time this summer.The world's largest airline, which has 24 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, said it is canceling about 115 flights a day through September 3 as a result of the grounding. It previously had canceled flights through August 19. The plane was grounded in mid-March after two fatal crashes, putting focus on a particular safety feature on the plane.American's canceled flights are the most extensive among US airlines. Southwest, which has 34 of the 737 Max jets in its fleet, has canceled flights only through August 5 at this time. United Airlines' cancellations also run into August.Not all of the American flights scheduled to be flown by the 737 Max will be canceled outright. Some will be flown with other aircraft. American is also canceling some flights scheduled to be flown by different aircraft, such as the original 737, to shift those resources to other flights.American said it is adjusting its schedules to affect the fewest number of passengers possible, and passengers whose flights are canceled will be able to rebook at no cost or get a full refund if they don't wish to take their trip.The 115 flights and 24 planes represent about 2% of American's overall operations. The airline operates about 6,800 flights a day during the busy summer travel season, including those flown for it by regional feeder airlines. Its mainline operations include a total of more than 900 aircraft.Late summer is one of the busiest times of the year for air travel, so the lost flights will hurt the airline — although Boeing is expecting to find ways to compensate airlines hurt by the Max grounding. An agency in Colorado that tracks avalanches hiked its danger level to "extreme" for a swath of the state, the highest level on its scale."Do not travel in the backcountry," the Colorado Avalanche Information Center said in a tweet Thursday. "Historic avalanches expected to valley floors."The extreme dangers are for Vail and Summit County, and the Sawatch, Gunnison and Aspen zones.Colorado has been with heavy snow and avalanches. Two deaths occurred there recently and an avalanche shut down a part of Interstate 70 and ruptured a natural gas pipeline.Spencer Logan, an avalanche forecaster with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, said avalanches are "running bigger than the last 20 to 30 years" and in some cases bigger than the last 50 years. American Airlines plans to cancel flights well into April because of the Boeing 737 Max grounding.American, the world's largest airline, said Sunday it is canceling about 90 flights a day out through April 24. Before Sunday's announcement, American had only canceled flights through March 28.The airline is hopeful that that the 737 Max planes will be flying again soon, but said it is canceling flights about a month out as it waits for word from the Federal Aviation Administration."Canceling in advance provides additional availability and rebooking options for our customers," said the statement from American.The global fleet of 371 of the 737 Max jets was grounded indefinitely on March 13 after two of the planes had fatal crashes. A Lion Air flight crashed in October and an Ethiopian Airlines flight crashed on March 10.The causes of the crashes have yet to be determined but the focus has been on an automatic safety feature which may have forced the nose of each plane lower when it incorrectly believed the plane was in danger of going into a stall.Boeing and the FAA said they are working on an upgrade of its software to deal with that safety feature. Boeing said at the time of the grounding that it expected that update to be available "within weeks."American has 24 of the 737 Max 8 jets. But not every flight which had been scheduled to have a 737 Max has been canceled. American said it has rearranged its schedule to use other aircraft to complete some of those flights."We have balanced [cancellations] across our system," said the airline. It said both international and domestic flights are affected.
