San Diego (KGTV)- In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, hundreds are giving back in the best way they can. This morning volunteers rolled up their sleeves to clean up Balboa Park. 14-year-old Maya Hundley spent the morning planting flowers with her family at the MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project. "I think it's important any day to help out, especially today," says Hundley. "Instead of being lazy or taking it as an extra day off, you can use that time to make a difference in the world." More than 300 volunteers spent the morning cleaning up Balboa Park. "People are doing anything from planting trees and flowers to raking leaves and hauling brush," says Melissa Spence with First United Methodist Church of San Diego. The city's parks and recreation department was on hand, showing volunteers which areas needed the most care. The MLK Day of Service Interfaith Project includes Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Unitarians working together. This is the 11th year the group has come together for the event. "As people of different faiths, we recognize that God gave us this earth we're being called to care for it in the best way that we can," says Spence. Volunteers say they believe this work would have made Dr. King proud."We all look so different, but we're all helping for a common cause," says Hundley. 1330

Their last minute pitches and speeches are happening this weekend at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina. Republican candidates, staff, and volunteers say they are ready to shake things up in Sacramento. “I will be the loyal opposition to the wayward liberals of the Legislature,” Lt. Governor candidate, Cole Harris said, at the candidate forum. “Jerry Brown has certainly left a mark in our state over the years,” Judge Steven Bailey said. The State Attorney General said Brown has not been the leader they had hoped for."We've had eight years of Jerry Brown,” Gubernatorial candidate, John Cox said. “Poverty has soared, the cost of living has soared, taxes have soared, so we're excited for the chance to change all of that."Republican Gubernatorial  candidates, John Cox of Rancho Santa Fe, and Travis Allen of Huntington Beach have until Sunday to pitch to the nearly 1,000 member GOP delegation in San Diego this weekend, to get the prized official party endorsement.They only get that if they win 60% of the votes cast at the convention tomorrow. With the endorsement, both men say the will be ready to fight head-on against Democratic frontrunner, Gavin Newsom. And if elected as Governor, both promised to rid both the controversial Gas tax increase the State's Sanctuary law. "These are the issues that affect every single Californian, regardless of political party,” Gubernatorial candidate, Travis Allen said. Allen said he has supported President Trump from the beginning.  While Cox did not vote for Trump in 2016, he eventually pledged his support of the President. SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Tech giants say they will not sell facial recognition software to police departments, for now.It's a tool police departments have been using for years, helping solve everything from property crimes to cold cases and missing people. But there's little oversight over the technology, and critics say it puts our privacy and civil rights in jeopardy.While police often use the software to scan the mug shots of criminals, there's a good chance your photo is also in the system. A 2016 Georgetown Law report found one in two American adults are in a law enforcement face recognition network. In addition to mug shots, social media photos and surveillance videos, many states also allow searches of driver's licenses databases.Critics of the technology also point to inaccuracies in the software.In 2018, researchers at MIT and Stanford University examined three commercially released facial-analysis programs from major technology companies.The analysis showed an error rate of 0.8% for light-skinned men compared to 34.7% for dark-skinned women.Steve Beaty is a professor of computer science at MSU Denver. "It appears these programs have, what we call, biases in them. That they're biased towards certain skin tones, for example, and will make more mistakes with certain types of people than other types of people," said Beaty. He says the bias can occur when the machines are trained. "The computers I don't think have any inherent bias in themselves, but they can only learn from the data sets they're provided with," said Beaty.If a machine sees more photos of white males while being trained, it will be able to identify them more accurately. And while the technology has proven to be a useful-crime fighting tool, a case of mistaken identity can mean an innocent person ends up with police looking into their private lives unnecessarily."I think it's a good idea to take a step back and say what is it we as a society want from our facial recognition technology? That's exactly what Amazon has come out and said," said Beaty. This week, Amazon announced a one-year moratorium on police use of their facial recognition technology, Rekognition. The company is calling on lawmakers to put in place stronger regulations to govern the technology's ethical use.Microsoft also said it will not sell its software to police departments for now, while IBM is abandoning its facial recognition program altogether. "Let's talk about what it means, and have the conversation, and make sure that we as a society, as a country, are comfortable with what the technology is being used for," said Beaty. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a heat advisory through Thursday for the coastal areas and Friday for the inland valleys in San Diego County.The hot weather and dry fuels create dangerous fire weather conditions, keeping fire crews across the county on high alert.“At nine, it already felt significantly warmer than the last couple of days,” said Elizabeth Conniff as she ended her hike at Iron Mountain Trailhead. “It was pretty hot, hotter than I expected, and very dry.”Poway reached nearly 100 degrees before noon Tuesday, nearing record-breaking temperatures for this time of year.Conniff, an experienced hiker, said that she would not recommend hiking during this time.Hotter temperatures are forecasted for Wednesday and Thursday.“If it’s going to be 100 or over, stay home, and that is from somebody who hikes three or four days a week,” she said.The NWS warns the hot weather could cause heat-related illnesses and recommends that people stay hydrated and out of the sun.Firefighting agencies ask everyone to remain vigilant and be extra cautious about doing anything that could spark a wildfire. 1141

(KGTV) — Pacific Beach restaurants are open for dine-in service for the first time since the pandemic started."People look happy, people are just happy they don't have to cook for themselves right now, they have some place to go where someone can cook for them," Mavericks Event Manager Krista Marcheschi said.Mavericks is a popular destination for drinks and dancing weekend nights, but since the pandemic Marcheschi said they are adhering to the strict guidelines set by the county.RELATED: Encinitas lifeguards out in full force for Memorial DayMarcheschi said they closed on March 15th and reopened last week for take out.
