A Delavan, Wisconsin woman thought she was gaining weight, but it turned out to be something much more serious. Tina Ferguson had 30 pounds of tumors in her stomach from a rare type of cancer.“I just thought it was middle age and weight gain," said Ferguson. "You have no idea you have something inside you that is killing you."A trip to the doctor gave her a diagnosis of ovarian cancer that was possibly benign. But when the doctor's opened her up to remove it they found something unexpected."I will never forget them coming in the room and saying, 'This is stage 4. You have appendix cancer,'" Ferguson said.On top that, it had ruptured attaching tumors to other organs and leaving a jelly-like substance called mucin in the lining of her abdomen. There was 30 pounds of it inside of Ferguson pushing on her organs."This is the mucin and tumor that's present inside of the abdomen before Tina had her operation," said Dr. Harvershp Mogal, a cancer surgeon at the Medical College of Wisconsin.It took doctors 12 hours to remove all the tumors and mucin. The rare cancer used to come with a very low survival rate. Ferguson was first told she only had months to live.However, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin used a new kind of chemotherapy called Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) to wash the tumors out."I basically give the patient a heated chemotherapy wash for about 90 minutes. The chemotherapy is heated to 108 Fahrenheit and what the chemotherapy does it takes care of any minute cancer cells that we can't see," said Mogal.Mogal said Ferguson is now cancer-free, just six months later."It's changed my entire outlook on life. You know almost dying, you can't take anything for granted. Every day is a gift," said Ferguson. 1798

A high school teacher from San Diego and her students are up for an Academy Award, KABC reports. They’re all taboo subjects in the United States, periods, menstruation and bleeding. But a group of high school students and their teacher, Melissa Berton, are trying to change that. Berton is originally from San Diego and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. Now, she's a producer on “Period. End of Sentence” and an English teacher at Oakwood High School in Los Angeles. “I think it has been a profound experience from start to finish,” Berton said. In 2013, she advised a group of students who were selected as United Nations delegates to advocate for women and girls. That’s when their journey to normalize menstruation began. “Who better to sort of be the voice for that than high school young women who are in that moment,” Berton said. Originally, the short documentary was a marketing tool for their bigger vision. A non-profit they created called Pad Project. Their mission was to get a machine that creates biodegradable pads to a rural village in India. “We never thought it would be an Oscar nominated film but the idea was always, if we could just make an educational film, to raise awareness about this issue, then that would be the jewel in the crown of our non-profit”The students were in charge of fundraising and creating the non-profit as well as bringing the documentary to life. Seven executive producers on the project are either in college or grad school and several associate producers are in high school. They put the documentary through the film festival circuit and received award after award and an Academy Award nomination. The students along with Berton say that their biggest achievement of all was normalizing periods for women around the world. “I think the students have felt different responses from their classmates and have felt a little less shy about something that maybe we don't need to feel so shy about,” Berton said. 1972

A congressional delegation will visit the Customs and Border Protection (CPB) station in New Mexico on Tuesday where a 7-year-old Guatemalan girl was taken before she died in a hospital, a congressional aide says.Jakelin Caal Maquin and her father were among a group of 163 migrants detained by Border Patrol agents the night of December 6 in a remote area of the New Mexico desert, according to CPB. She became sick as they were being taken from the Antelope Wells port of entry in New Mexico to the station in Lordsburg, about 90 minutes away.Two days later, Jakelin was dead, officials said. She had vomited and stopped breathing while in Border Patrol custody and later went into cardiac arrest and suffered brain swelling at a Texas hospital.Eleven members of the House of Representatives, led by incoming Hispanic Caucus Chairman Rep. A Five Guys in Daphne, Alabama has fired or suspended several of their employees after they refused to serve local police officers, the restaurant posted on their Facebook page.According to the Daphne Police Department, on July 7 three Daphne officers entered the restaurant and after realizing they forgot to put their masks on due to the restaurant's mask policy, so they returned to their patrol cars and came back inside wearing their masks.According to WJW, when the officers came back into the restaurant, the employees refused to serve them, so they left and went somewhere else to eat.After hearing of the incident, the restaurant closed so the store and its employees could work with the police department "for further education and customer service training." 777
