SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Health officials in San Diego County reported 269 new COVID-19 infections Sunday, bringing the total to 54,583 since mid-February, and two new deaths, bringing the overall fatality total to 870.The two deaths were men reported to have died earlier this month. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California restaurant owners from across the state, including San Diego County, filed government claims today seeking refunds of state and local fees assessed during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying public health orders have forced them to shutter their doors or operate under capacity restrictions even as they're charged fees for liquor licenses, health permits and tourism assessments.The claims were filed in San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange, Sacramento and Monterey counties. Claims will also be filed in San Francisco, Fresno and Placer counties, according to the restaurant owners' attorneys.Plaintiffs' attorney Brian Kabateck said, ``Restaurant owners are obligated to pay these government fees just to operate, yet the same government entities who have collected those fees have forced these businesses to close their doors or drastically restrict operations due to the pandemic. We simply want the government to return those fees to those restaurants who followed the law and closed.''The state has 45 days to respond to the claims, which are necessary precursors to a potential class-action lawsuit.The move was supported by the California Restaurant Association, whose president and CEO, Jot Condie, said, ``Even when the restrictions are lifted, the devastating impact on the restaurant industry will extend for years. Restaurants have not received any form of relief. Easing fees would help enable establishments to stay open and keep vulnerable workers employed.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Coroner's officials today said that a worker who fell 60 feet to his death while setting up a stage for the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio was a 49-year-old San Diego man.The worker was identified as Christopher Griffin, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office. The Riverside County Fire Department reported receiving a call of someone falling from a roof at 9:26 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Monroe Street and Avenue 50.The venue for the festival, the Empire Polo Club, is located on the southwest corner of that intersection. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.In a written statement Saturday, the festival's production company, Goldenvoice, confirmed the death."Today, Goldenvoice lost a colleague, a friend, a family member. Our friend fell while working on a festival stage. It is with heavy hearts and tremendous difficulty that we confirm his passing. He has been with our team for twenty years in the desert and was doing what he loved. He was a hard- working and loving person that cared deeply about his team. As our lead rigger, he was responsible for the countless incredible shows that have been put on at the festival. We will miss him dearly,'' the company said.The Indio Police Department was investigating the death. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Eight people were selected to serve on the county's Independent Redistricting Commission, in a random drawing during today's San Diego County Board of Supervisors meeting.Commissioners will redraw boundaries for the county's five supervisorial districts by December 2021, based on new federal census numbers.Those chosen to serve are David Bame, Colleen Brown, Amy Caterina, Chris Chen, Sonia Diaz, Barbara Hansen, Arvid Larson and John Russ.Bame lives in District 1; Russ lives in District 2; Caterina is in District 3; Diaz, Hansen and Larson live in District 4; and Brown and Chen live in District 5.The redistricting process happens every 10 years. Andrew Potter, clerk of the Board of Supervisors, said the commission will have 14 members with the appropriate skills, and also reflect the county's political diversity.Using a raffle roll cage, Potter and two colleagues drew names from a pool of 59 qualified applicants. Nearly 300 people applied to serve on the volunteer commission.The commission will meet later this month, and choose six more members out of 51 qualified applicants. There must be a full commission seated by Dec. 31, according the county.The commission must hold at least seven public hearings, and at least one must take place in each supervisorial district. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A roughly 36-hour spell of hazardously heavy surf will hit San Diego-area beaches beginning tomorrow, making the ocean extra dicey for surfers, swimmers and boaters.The large west swell is expected to arrive late Wednesday morning and generate waves of six to 14 feet in some locales, with the highest sets mostly occurring south of Encinitas, forecasters said.The anticipated conditions prompted the National Weather Service to issue a high-surf advisory, effective from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m.Thursday, and a small-craft advisory, set to run from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 10 p.m. Thursday.Among the dangers posed by the rough local seas will be strong rip currents, minor coastal flooding and coastal erosion, according to the federal agency, which cautioned that entrances to harbors -- particularly Mission Bay -- will be difficult due to breakers large enough to capsize boats.The surf likely will peak late Wednesday into early Thursday, then slowly subside through Friday, the weather service advised. 1034
