CAIRO, Nov. 7 (Xinhua) -- Delivering a speech at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, capital of Egypt, on Saturday, visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao described the world as full of colors and with different civilizations which constitute cultural diversity.     The history of human civilization has testified that cultural diversity is necessary for human prosperity, and dialogue, exchange and integration among different civilizations have formed an irreversible historical trend and a necessity for the improvement and continuous development of civilizations.     "Dialogue, exchange and integration among different civilizations form the powerful current of human civilization surging ahead ceaselessly," Wen said.     Today's world is home to over 200 countries and regions, more than 2,500 ethnic groups and 6,000-plus languages, the Chinese premier cited just a few numbers to demonstrate the diversity.     Under the current international circumstance which is undergoing profound and complex changes featuring increasingly deepened world multi-polarization and economic globalization, peace and development remain the two main themes facing the human society. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao (R) stands with Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa at the headquarters of the Arab League in downtown Cairo Nov. 7, 2009The maintenance of world peace and the pursuit of social stability and common development have become the common and shared aspiration of all peoples. Therefore, dialogue on equal footing between different civilizations is of great practical significance.     Dialogue among civilizations as conducive to enhancing mutual understanding and harmonious co-existence among peoples, to promoting constant progress of human society, to promoting the establishment of a just and rational new international order, and to promoting diversification of the world and the sharing of human civilization.     In 1956, seven years after its founding, the People's Republic of China established contacts with the Arab League. Over the next few decades, mutual understanding and support gained momentum. In the recent decade, the two sides have witnessed even closer ties and have maintained coordination and mutual support in international affairs.     In January 2004, during Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to the Arab League headquarters in Cairo, China and the Arab League announced the establishment of the China-Arab States Cooperation Forum.     In the following several years, a variety of cultural exchange activities has deepened understanding between both sides, and the forum became a new platform for promoting China-Arab friendly relations.     With an accelerated pace of globalization, peoples of different cultural backgrounds have the urgent need for mutual understanding and learning from each other, only through which a solid foundation can be laid for sustainable cooperation between different nations.     China and the Arab countries are all developing countries, which share a common aspiration of peace, stability and development. In recent years, both sides have continued to strengthen economic and trade exchanges, high-level visits and cultural exchanges.     Both sides, therefore, have every reason to believe that through more dialogue and exchanges, the Chinese civilization and Islamic civilization will be able to continue to enrich themselves, respect each other, co-exist harmoniously and develop together in a world that embraces diversity, and both sides will adopt a strategic perspective and proceed from the long-term interests of the peoples on both sides to unswervingly promote the stable and comprehensive development of the China-Arab relations and open a new chapter for the China-Arab friendly and cooperative relationship.

SHANGHAI, Nov. 16 (Xinhua) -- President Barack Obama said here Monday that the United States would further expand its youth exchanges with China by dramatically expanding the number of students studying here to 100,000.     Obama said during a dialogue with Chinese students in Shanghai Science and Technology Museum Monday afternoon that young people in China and U.S. are the best ambassadors and that cooperation between the countries should go beyond the governments.     "These exchanges mark a clear commitment to build ties among our people, as surely as you will help us determine the destiny of21st century," he said.     Shanghai was the first leg of Obama's maiden trip to China on Nov. 15-18 since he took office in January.     "I believe strongly that cooperation must grow beyond our government. It must be rooted in our people, in the studies we share, in the business we do, in the knowledge that we gain, and even in the sports we play, and these bridges must be built by men and women just like you, and your counterparts in America," Obama told an audience of about 600 university students in Shanghai.     "I am absolutely confident that America has no better ambassadors to offer than our young people, for they just like you are filled with talent, energy and optimism about the history that is yet to be written.     "So let this be the next step in the steady pursuit of cooperation between our two nations and the world," Obama said.     After delivering the opening remarks, Obama took questions from students as well as the Chinese online community, covering a wide range of topics such as Sino-U.S. cooperation, cross-Strait relations and anti-terrorism in the U.S..     The White House website Sunday posted a notice of Obama's meeting with Chinese youth, saying that holding the event in Shanghai was symbolic as the Shanghai Communiqué was announced here and helped pave the way for normalization and the first 30 years of formal diplomatic relations.     "If there is one thing we can take from today's dialogue, I hope that it is a commitment to continue this dialogue going forward," Obama said in his speech.

SHANGHAI, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- Canada would like to further economic ties with China, said visiting Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper here on Friday.     Harper announced the launch of four new trade offices in China by the Canadian government in cooperation with the Canadian Commercial Cooperation at a welcome banquet here Friday night. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivers a speech at the Canada-China 100-year-trade banquet in Shanghai, east China, Dec. 4, 2009.Addressing the banquet, Harper said, this announcement is a concrete step Canada is taking toward enhancing and expanding its economic ties with China.     The new offices are in addition to the two International Trade Minister Day launched in April, said Harper, adding that "Together, they will enhance our ability to support even more commercial links in exports, investment and innovation between our two countries."     According to Harper, since 2005 alone, two-way merchandise trade between the two countries has grown steadily each year by an average of more than 14 percent. During this period, Canadian exports to China have grown by more than 3 billion dollars.     The total bilateral trade is now valued at over 53 billion dollars. China is Canada's second largest merchandise trading partner and third largest export market. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper delivers a speech at the Canada-China 100-year-trade banquet in Shanghai, east China, Dec. 4, 2009Harper said, to help growing this relationship, the Canadian government has recently dedicated over a billion dollars into trade infrastructure on the pacific coast--the Asia-Pacific Gateway, which is an integrated system of ports, airports, road and rail connections that link Asia deep into the heart of the North American marketplace.     Facing the economic downturn, both Canada and China have been strong contributors to the collective efforts of the G20 to foster a genuine, global recovery, said Harper, noting that both countries need to keep voices strong and united at the G20 table.     "I look forward to welcoming President Hu to Canada next year when we host the next meeting of G20."     In June 2010, Canada will host the G8 summit in the Muskoka region of central Ontario and also co-host a G20 summit there with the Republic of Korea.     Harper also stressed the importance to remove protectionist barriers and ease trade restrictions, saying that pursuing freer trade is the most effective "antidote" to the current crisis.     By announcing Canada's second-round funding under the Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development and Climate, Harper vowed to enhance energy cooperation with China.     With the second phase of projects, Canada will have invested in twenty-eight clean technology projects worldwide, including fourteen new projects in or of benefit to China, said Harper.     The welcome banquet, co-hosted by Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai and Canada-China Business Council, was held to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the launch of Canada's Trade Commissioner Service in Shanghai.
