A federal judge in California ruled against the Trump administration on Friday in two different cases, ultimately preventing .5 billion in federal funds from being used for a border wall in portions of California, New Mexico, Texas and Arizona.In the first case, US District Court for Northern California ruled in favor of a challenge to President Donald Trump's attempt to move billions from the Defense Department budget toward building a border wall in El Centro, California, and New Mexico.Trump's move was done as part of his national emergency declaration in February. A man is accused of setting fire to cardboard that a homeless man was sleeping under in Southern California. The Glendale Police Department says 32-year-old Richard Smallets intentionally set the fire on a sidewalk near a popular shopping center on Sept. 12. Police responded to the scene at about 1:22 a.m. to assist firefighters called to extinguish the fire. An investigation revealed the homeless man was awoken by the odor of smoke, realized the cardboard above him was on fire and unsuccessfully attempted to put out the flames with bottled water. Later that afternoon, police say detectives retrieved video surveillance from a nearby business that captured a man intentionally lighting the cardboard on fire and then taking photos. Officers later came in contact with Smallets at nearby Central Park. After questioning, he was identified as the suspect and subsequently placed under arrest on an arson charge. The next day, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed an attempted murder charge against Smallets. His bail has been set at million. A Florida woman is facing attempted murder charges after police say she told her four children to unbuckle their seat belts and then purposefully drove a minivan into a tree yesterday.Calicia Williams and the children, who are between 7 and 13 years old, were all injured in the crash, Ocala police said in a release.Williams was speeding and told the children to take off their seat belts and stretch out their hands before the crash, according to the release."The devil can't hurt you, he only hurts bad people," Williams said just before the crash, according to the police report, which cited a witness whose name was redacted. "You have the light of Jesus in you and only Jesus can cure us," according to the police report.Williams was standing outside of the van when police arrived. Washington's state capitol has become ground zero in the debate surrounding whether parents should be able to opt out of getting their children vaccinated. More than 60 kids have been diagnosed with measles in Washington, and the vast majority of them did not have a measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine. If passed, two bills in the state’s legislature would prohibit parents from opting out of vaccines for philosophical reasons. Cindy Sharpe, with the Washington State Medical Association, supports the bills. "Every child that gets a vaccination protects another child who can’t be vaccinated,” says Sharpe. Susie Olson-Corgan, with Informed Choice Washington, opposes the bills. She says her son is one of the very rare cases of kids that had a medical complication as a result of the MMR vaccine."That needs to be an individual discussion that's had, so the patient is looked at as a person and not as a population," Olsen-Corgan says.This debate isn’t just happening in Washington.
