BEIJING, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- China is ready to work together with the United States to forge ahead bilateral relations of constructive cooperation along the right track and in a sustained, healthy and stable manner, President Hu Jintao said here on Sunday.During a meeting with his U.S. counterpart George W. Bush at Zhongnanhai, compound of China's central authorities, in Beijing, China, Aug. 10, 2008.     China-U.S. relations have maintained a good momentum, and face opportunities for further development, Hu said.    The Chinese president cited frequent exchanges between the two countries at all levels, a better mechanism of dialogue and consultation in diverse areas, and fruitful consultation and coordination on major international and regional issues, such as the Korea Peninsula nuclear issue, the Iran nuclear issue and the Darfur issue.    Hu spoke highly of Bush's contribution in promoting bilateral relations, and said he was very pleased to meet Bush again.    "This is already the fourth visit you pay to our country, which has made you the U.S. president paying the most visits to China in the presidential terms," Hu told Bush.    "This has fully demonstrated the great importance Mr. President has attached to the development of Sino-U.S. relations," he said.    The inauguration of the new U.S. embassy in Beijing on Friday, which President Bush attended, and the inauguration of the Chinese embassy in Washington at the end of last month, signified the further advancement of the China-U.S. relations, said the Chinese president.    In response, Bush noted that bilateral relations with China are important, constructive and forthright, adding that the U.S. side will continue to work with China to build bilateral ties on a more solid foundation.    On the Taiwan issue, Hu reiterated China's stance against "Taiwan independence," and hoped the United States properly handles the issue to support the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations.    "No matter what kind of changes take place in the cross-Strait relations, our stance of adhering to the one-China principle and opposing 'Taiwan independence' secessionist activities will never change, and cannot be changed," Hu said.    Under new circumstances, the Chinese government will continue to push for the peaceful development of the relations across the Taiwan Straits, and promote cross-Strait personnel, economic and cultural exchanges and cooperation, said the Chinese president, adding that China hopes to see Washington properly handle the Taiwan issue and support such peaceful development.    President Bush responded that the United States is glad to see the improvement of cross-Strait relations.    During the meeting, which was followed by a banquet, the U.S. president said that he enjoyed the conservation with Hu, and has had "memorable experience" every time he visited the country.    Describing the grand opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games, which he attended on Friday night, as "spectacular," Bush congratulated China on the successful opening of the Games and said he has "fully enjoyed" the Games. Todd Bachman died from knife wounds while his wife suffered multiple stab wounds and was in critical but stable condition after an eight-hour surgery.    Police said that the assailant, 47-year-old Tang Yongming from Hangzhou of east China's Zhejiang Province, later killed himself by jumping off a 130-foot high balcony on the Drum Tower.    During the Sunday meeting, the two presidents also exchanged views on other issues, including the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the Iran nuclear issue.    They agreed that the two sides should maintain communication and coordination, and make joint efforts to facilitate the proper settlement of these issues.    Both leaders also made a positive evaluation of the progress achieved through the strategic and economic dialogue between the two countries, and agreed to work together to help the dialogue achieve more positive results.

The CPPCC was responsible and duty-bound to contribute to the relief and reconstruction work. BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- A preliminary investigation confirmed the contaminated Sanlu baby milk powder as the cause of kidney stones in infants after a first-phase probe by experts, China's Ministry of Health said here on Friday.    An investigation team jointly organized by departments including the health, public security, agriculture ministries and quality watchdog examined the urine and kidney stones of the infant patients and found the substance melamine therein.     The investigation team, which is in Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province, where dairy producer Sanlu Group is based, is now coordinating with the local government to investigate the incident.     "Those responsible for the contaminated milk will face severe punishment," said an official with the team.     The team arrived in Hebei on Friday. After listening to the local government's report on its handling of the incident, they collected samples and documents from the Sanlu Group and the local quality testing agency. They also visited the affected babies in local hospitals and gave advice on the treatment.     Sanlu, one of China's leading dairy producers, found during an internal company investigation in August its powdered milk products were contaminated with melamine, according to the team's investigation. Parents of the babies with kidney stones tell the reporter about their kids' drinking state at a military hospital in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, Sept. 11, 2008. So far this year, Gansu Provincial Health Department has seen 59 kidney stone cases in infants, and at least one baby died as a result of kidney stones. Most of them live in rural areas of the province. There were no such cases in 2006 or 2007The statement didn't say why the company didn't release the findings until news reports exposed dozens of babies became sick with kidney stones after consuming the Sanlu brand of baby milk powder for a prolonged period.     Health experts said melamine is a chemical raw material. Ingestion can lead to stone formation in the urinary tract.     A thermosetting plastic, melamine has an appearance similar to milk powder. It is widely used in manufacturing fabric, glue, housewares and flame retardants.     "The substance gives the appearance of a high nitrogen level, which is an index to measure the protein content in food," a health expert told Xinhua. He declined to be named.     One baby in the northwest Gansu province died from the stones. At least 59 cases had been reported in Gansu and other provinces.     Sanlu had sealed off 2,176 tons of contaminated milk powder and recalled 8,210 tonnes from the market. There were still 700 tonnes in circulation. All the contaminated formula was produced before Aug. 6.     Supermarkets in some provinces had started to pull the milk powder off shelves.     The Health Ministry said on Friday it had launched a nationwide investigation into the contaminated milk formula. All local health agencies were to report cases of infants with kidney stones immediately. It also issued a treatment plan on its website (www.moh.gov.cn) to help hospitals deal with sick babies.

Many countries have offered help including making donations and sending rescue teams.     QUAKE RELIEF ATOP GOVERNMENT WORK AGENDA     In the meeting, Hu urged local governments at all levels and relevant central government departments to take quake relief as the most important and pressing issue in their work.     He called for unremitting efforts to search for and rescue the trapped people though more than five days had passed after the disaster.     "We should put people first and saving people's lives is still the top priority of the relief work," he said.     Troops, armed police, and public security personnel should reach villages and search every collapsed buildings to save the people, he said.     Hu also called for all-out efforts to save and cure injured survivors, urging to transfer them to hospitals with better conditions.     Hygiene measures in the quake-hit areas should be beefed up to prevent the spread of diseases, and more medical experts should be sent to these areas to help prevent and control possible epidemics, Hu said.     During the meeting, Hu expressed his concern for the people in the quake-devastated areas, calling for arrangements of supplies of daily necessities to meet people's demands.     Food, clothes, drinking water and temporary shelters must be ensured, he emphasized.     Hu also underscored social stability in quake hit areas, ordering officials to give considerate comfort and condolence to people to ensure a peaceful social environment.     "We must keep highly alert" against aftershocks and avoid further losses, he warned.     Hu also called for tightened monitoring and prevention measures on geological disasters such as landslides and mud-rock flows.     He said early planning is important for reconstruction as the country now faces a challenging task in this regard.     He also ordered early preparations and arrangements to deal with the issues of orphans, seniors and disabled.     The meeting was presided over by Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, who urged implementation of the overall quake-relief strategies of the central government.

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) on Saturday said it expects an increase in grain output for the fifth consecutive year.     The country has harvested nearly 80 percent of its autumn crops and expects 2008 to be a bumper year, the ministry stated.     The State Grain Information Center earlier estimated that this year's grain output would reach 511.5 million tons, up 10 million tons from 2007.
