BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 (Xinhua) -- China expected an early resumption of the six-party talks to ease tensions and resolve the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said here on Tuesday.All parties should make joint efforts to ease tensions between the south and the north on the peninsula and strive to resume the six-party talks at an early date, said Wen while meeting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak on the sidelines of the eighth Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit in Brussels."This is in the fundamental interests of all parties involved and is conducive to peace and stability in the region," he said.The six-party talks, a multilateral mechanism designed to peacefully denuclearize the Korean Peninsula, were launched in 2003. The talks involve China, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), Japan, South Korea, Russia and the United States.Speaking of the upcoming Group of 20 (G20) Seoul Summit, slated for Nov. 11-12, Wen said it was of great significance for boosting the world economic recovery, adding that China would support South Korea in seeking positive outcomes at the meeting.Wen said China regards South Korea as a friendly neighbor and an important partner. It also cherished the hard-won mutual understanding and trust between the two countries, believing the bilateral ties could withstand tests and continue to develop.China would also work with South Korea to boost cooperation in East Asia, Wen added.Lee appreciated China's support for Seoul G20 summit, saying his country would keep working with China to improve bilateral ties and play an active role in safeguarding peace and stability as well as deepening cooperation within the region.

URUMQI, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese leader Zhou Yongkang has called for breakthroughs in the development of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region during his five-day inspection tour there.Breakthroughs should be achieved in efforts to resettle herdsmen, promote bilingual and vocational education, utilize natural resources, and develop industrial parks, said Zhou, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.Zhou told local officials to thoroughly carry out policies set by the central government to develop Xinjiang and strive for the improvement of well-being for the locals.Zhou traveled across the sprawling Xinjiang, about one sixth of China's territory, from Sept. 19 to 24. TAIPEI, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Taiwan-based groups called on the Kuomintang party to further cooperation and reconciliation with the mainland on Sunday.The call was made by Chi Hsing, chairwoman of the Alliance for the Reunification of China, at a dinner party attended by about 300 representatives from various social groups in Taiwan.She expressed hope that the Kuomintang could take the opportunity of the ever more frequent trade exchanges with the mainland and the overall amity between the two sides to seek further cooperation and reconciliation.She also expressed hope that the two sides could end the hostility so that people from both sides across the Taiwan Strait could share the glory of the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.Yok Mu-ming, chairman of the New Party, also delivered a speech at the gathering.The dinner party was held to celebrate three anniversaries which all fall in October, including National Day of the People's Republic of China, the 1911 Revolution led by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and the end of the Japanese rule over Taiwan on Oct. 25, 1945.

ANKARA, Oct. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese and Turkish scholars gathered at a political forum in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Monday to discuss their economic ties, cooperation in the Middle East and coordination within the Group of 20 (G20).Wang Zhongwei, deputy director of China's State Council Information Office which sponsors the forum, said China and Turkey, both G20 members and emerging economies, share interests in such major issues as reforming international financial system and tackling climate change."We should further coordinate and cooperate in those issues. That's in the interests of the two countries' people and benefits regional and world peace and stability," Wang said in an opening speech.Fatih Ceylan, deputy undersecretariat of the Turkish Foreign Ministry, said China and Turkey hold similar views on many regional and international issues and have great potential for better cooperation.As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Turkey has worked together with China very well in issues related to Afghanistan, the Palestinians and Iran, he said.Zhang Yuyan, a scholar with the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, suggested China and Turkey uphold the principle of " common but differentiated responsibility" on climate change and strive to increase the representation and voice of developing countries in international institutions.Kamer Kasim, vice president of Turkey's International Strategic Research Organization, said it's good for both China and Turkey to increase cooperation in security, energy, tourism and other areas.The forum was a part of a large-scale cultural event termed " Experience China in Turkey", which was held in Ankara and the Turkish city of Istanbul.The event, starting on Sunday and to last till the end of the month, covers nine major activities, including Chinese-Turkish political and economic forums, Chinese movie and television weeks, Chinese cuisine festival and exchanges between journalists and writers.
