SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A driver died Wednesday following a two-car crash at what a Clairemont resident describes as a known trouble spot for traffic. The crash happened about 1 p.m. at the intersection of Genesee Avenue and Chateau Drive, south of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. “Hit so hard it sounded like an explosion,” said Bonnie Alexander, who has lived in a home at the intersection for some 40 years. He’s no longer with us,” said Alexander. The man's identity was not immediately released.Alexander’s home has been struck by cars five times. She’s hoping to get a guardrail at the location. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Utah football team arrived in San Diego Wednesday and practiced at Mesa College in Clairemont, five days before facing Northwestern in Monday's Holiday Bowl. The Utes bowl week itinerary includes a joint visit with the Wildcats to U.S. Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt on Friday and a trip to the San Diego Zoo on Saturday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV and CNS) - Trial started Monday for the Yuma, Arizona police officer accused of raping a woman during a visit to San Diego.Jared Elkins, 34, is charged with eight felony counts of rape for the alleged incident in September 2017.The 23-year-old woman’s mother called 911 to report a crime at a home on Marlborough Street in Kensington. Elkins, who is related to the alleged victim by marriage, was staying at her home.Elkins, the alleged victim, and two other family members went to dinner then watched a movie while drinking beer and wine at the home before the alleged assault occurred, according to prior court testimony.RELATED: Arizona police officer charged with raping San Diego womanThe alleged victim testified during a preliminary hearing in April that Elkins physically forced her to participate in sex acts despite her pleas for him to stop. The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police.At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 14-year-old from Jamul was among seven military teenagers crowned Operation Homefront 2018 Military Child of the Year.Isabelle Richards, who attends High Tech Middle School in Point Loma, received the award this week for her accomplishments in leadership and extracurricular activities while facing the challenges of military family life.Richards was given the Child of the Year award for the U.S. Navy.The San Diego teenager created a local call to action group called Cards and Cupcakes Supporting Our Wounded Warriors, which sends greeting cards and cupcakes to a segment of veterans. She also founded and runs the Dove Self-Esteem project at High Tech Middle.The hours Richards has dedicated to the cause pales in comparison to the contributions of wounded veterans, according to the teen, who says "When I am tired or feeling lazy, I remember what they sacrificed, and they never complain."In addition to her accomplishments, Richards has worked with the Freedom Station and USO San Diego and maintained a 4.0 GPA. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — About an hour east of San Diego is a town with few people and a lot of history."In 1880 you'd be getting run over by wagons sitting right here in this little route," Larry Johnson, president of the Mountain Empire Historical Society, says standing on a road in Campo. "I initially came here in 1956."And like many others they come here for a reason.Robert Marks, who owns East County Lumber & Ranch Supply, learned Campo was for sale last week. "We found out the owner was selling all 3 parcels, maybe he won it in a card game!" Marks jokes.While we can't verify that, the current owner of Campo is a Las Vegas investor. He's looking to sell but hasn't named a price.The sale encompasses 28 residential units and seven commercial properties. About 100 to 150 people live in the listing area and about 3,000 are scattered across the whole town.
