Thursday marks National Coming Out Day — an LGBTQ holiday that encourages young queer people to be comfortable with their sexuality and live an open lifestyle.2018 marks the 30th anniversary of the first National Coming Out Day, first celebrated in 1988. According to the Human Rights Campaign, the day was started by gay activists Robert Eichberg and Jean O'Leary. Recognized by all 50 states, the day is celebrated each year on the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights, which took place on Oct. 11, 1987.As a psychologist, Eichberg wrote extensively on the act of "coming out" to friends, family and coworkers. in 1978, he established "The Experience," a community workshop in Los Angeles that encouraged young LGBTQ people to live an openly gay lifestyle among friends and family.According to Eichberg, when LGBTQ people lived an open lifestyle it made their friends and family more likely to be accepting of queer lifestyles. It also encourages other gay people to live openly and helps develop a support network for those who may be struggling with their sexual identities.The Human Rights Campaign has published a resource guide to coming out, which you can read below. Transportation officials are warning of what they call a "death spiral" if public transit does not get the federal funding it needs to stay afloat.Ridership has fallen by 90 percent since the pandemic as departments find themselves strapped for cash.“Without transit, there is no economic recovery,” said Corinne Kisner, executive director of the National Association of Transportation Officials (NACTO).The American Public Transportation Association estimates 36 million Americans relied on public transportation in 2019, with about 36 percent of that servicing essential workers, according to the advocacy group TransitCenter.“The reality is that transit agencies are in an existential crisis,” said Kisner.Once ridership dropped across the country, public transportation departments saw their revenues plummet. Beth Osborne with Transportation for America, a public advocacy group, says aside from ride fares most transit money comes from sales tax, which also took a hit when the economy shut down.“It really does have tentacles that affect so much of our economy, of our health, of recovery and getting through this,” said Osborne.In San Francisco, the revenue drop has led to Bay Area Rapid Transit dropping more than 50 percent of its service. The story is similar for most major city transit systems.“We’re really limping along and hoping Congress will approve more funding for us,” said Jim Allison, spokesman for BART. “We’re doing what we can to try and get essential workers to and from where they need to go, but beyond that, it’s not much of a service compared to what we used to provide.”The billion in CARES Act funding alleviated some woes early on, but officials estimate billion more is needed to make it through the end of the year, and right now, no package is in place.If departments don’t find an answer, NACTO says 30,000 jobs could be lost because of stalled capital improvement projects.A lacking service could also mean a life or death scenario for more than just transit departments.“We need people to get tested,” said Osborne. “In many places, they have said they will not test anyone who does not arrive in a car. There is something unique about places like Montana. There is an uncertainty to what you could find in “Big Sky Country.”That is a quality that has always driven Joseph Haas’ guide and outfitting business, A Lazy H Outfitters. But this year has brought a kind of uncertainty, unique to anything he’s faced before."By February, it just cratered to almost zero at all in terms of requests for even any information at all," Haas said. “It was, it was scary.”This time of year, people travel from all over to have Haas lead them on multi-day horseback tours through the Montana wilderness, usually."We have very few customers from the east or west coast, California in particular, we are seeing almost nothing from California," Haas said.Haas' business is located in Choteau, Montana, a town with a population of about 1,700 people. Summer is usually the busy season in the community, which located along the shortest route between Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park.“I would think that we’ve probably had at least 95% of the events we had booked canceled and reservation-wise," said Barb Bouma, who owns the Stage Stop Inn in Choteau.The American Hotel and Lodging Association says hotel occupancy levels might not recover until 2022 nationwide. Bouma doesn’t know if her hotel will make it that far.“It’s not sustaining itself. How long we can go, yeah I’m not sure," Bouma said.Like many business owners in the pandemic, Haas has had to cut back."Right now, I have one person. Normally, I would have two or three in the summer," Haas said about the number of employees he has getting gear ready for his trips.He says reservations for his business have started to pick up again. He also says reservations for hunting trips he offers are booked years in advance and have held steady.As Haas starts to lead people back into the wild to show off the rugged uncertainty of “Big Sky County,” he hopes the struggles he’s faced this year stay unique to 2020.“There’s so much more known about the coronavirus now," Haas said. "If they can travel, the known will outweigh the risk for people.” 2107

The Fontenelle Forest Raptor Recovery has seen an increase in the amount of eagles and other birds coming in with lead poisoning.So far this year, nine eagles have been treated at the center; only three remain alive after intense treatments.This sights of this iconic bird being poisoned by lead-based ammo has some hunters thinking twice before buying lead.Kent Walton is an avid hunter who lives in Papillion, Nebraska. He said he's been hunting his whole life and will not buy lead-based ammo because of its affects on these birds."I made the switch to non-toxic shot, steel, tungsten, bismuth and those types of things, and that's what I use now in the field," he said.Many hunters said they chose lead because it's cheaper, and because they believe it makes their shot more accurate. Walton disagrees: "I don't see any difference in performance."This mission tugs at Walton's heartstrings because he also helps bring birds into Raptor Recovery when they are sick or injured. "It's not pretty," he said. "It's very sick, and it takes a lot to get them back on their feet, if you can."Walton hopes other hunters will take his lead."If you love to see the eagles soaring overhead and you love the fact they are coming back to Nebraska, there's more and more nests here then there were last year," he said. "That's why you should care: It's bringing them back and keeping them from getting that lead positioning." 1512
