After three mass shootings left at least 32 people dead in the span of a week, FBI Director Chris Wray has ordered the agency's offices across the country to conduct a new threat assessment in an effort to thwart future mass attacks, law enforcement sources told CNN.Field offices will be actively working to identify threats similar to the attacks last week at local food festival in California, a Walmart in Texas, and an entertainment district in Ohio, the sources said.A command group at the bureau's Washington headquarters will oversee the effort, the sources said. The agency said it was concerned that US-based domestic violent extremists could become inspired by the attacks to "engage in similar acts of violence.""The FBI asks the American public to report to law enforcement any suspicious activity that is observed either in person or online," the FBI said in a Sunday statement.Police found extremist material during the search of a home believed to be connected to the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooter, a law enforcement source said. The El Paso shooting suspect, who has been charged with capital murder, posted a racist, anti-immigrant document online, police believe. The 'manifesto,' as authorities called it, was filled with white supremacist language and hatred aimed at immigrants. The attack in El Paso, the agency said, "underscores the continued threat posed by domestic violent extremists and perpetrators of hate crimes."The FBI's Domestic Terrorism-Hate Crimes Fusion Cell, which was established in the spring, will be investigating the shooting."Composed of subject matter experts from both the Criminal Investigative and Counterterrorism Divisions, the fusion cell offers program coordination from FBI Headquarters, helps ensure seamless information sharing across divisions, and augments investigative resources," the FBI said. 1865

After arriving at their Airbnb in Cork, Ireland, a family from New Zealand made an unsettling discovery: a hidden camera, livestreaming from the living room.Nealie and Andrew Barker, from Auckland, were in the midst of a 14-month trip around Europe when they arrived at the Airbnb property with their four children and niece.Once the family had unpacked, Andrew Barker, who works in IT security, scanned the house's Wi-Fi network. The scan unearthed a camera, and subsequently a live feed. From the angle of the video, the family tracked down the camera, concealed in what appeared to be a smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detector."It was such a shock. It was just a really horrible feeling," Nealie Barker told CNN.She called Airbnb to report the camera. "They had no advice for us over the phone," she said. "The girl just said that if you cancel within 14 days, you won't get your money back."Next, Andrew Barker called the owner of the property. When confronted with the family's discovery, Nealie Barker said, the host hung up. Later, he called back, insisting the camera in the living room was the only one in the house."We didn't feel relieved by that," she said, adding that the host refused to confirm whether he was recording the livestream, or capturing audio. The family relocated to a nearby hotel and called Airbnb the following day. "They still didn't seem to grasp the seriousness of the issue. They were treating it like a canceled booking," Nealie Barker said. Ultimately, Airbnb's trust and safety team promised to conduct an investigation, and it temporarily suspended the listing.According to Nealie Barker, Airbnb did not contact the family again. After she got through to them two weeks later, the company told her that the host had been "exonerated," and the listing reinstated. It was only after she posted about the incident on 1862

A total of 37 former Ohio State students filed a lawsuit against the school Wednesday alleging the university "actively concealed" its knowledge of actions by a doctor who they say was a sexual predator.Sexual abuse allegations against Dr. Richard Strauss -- who died by suicide in 2005 -- emerged last year after former Ohio State athletes came forward to claim the doctor had sexually abused them under the guise of a medical examination. The lawsuit says Strauss sexually assaulted and abused hundreds of male students and that "OSU officials aided, abetted, and actively concealed Strauss' sexual predation" on students."We agree with OSU president (Michael) Drake that there was an 'institutional failure' on the part of Ohio State to protect these athletes," attorney Michael Wright said. "It is our hope that OSU takes full responsibility for that failure."An Ohio State University spokesman declined to comment on the lawsuit Wednesday. The litigation comes about two weeks after an independent 1013

All four crew members aboard a cargo ship that capsized off the coast of Georgia have been rescued, the Coast Guard said Monday.Cpt. John Reed of the US Coast Guard said the first three rescued crew members were hospitalized, but were doing well considering the circumstances. The condition of the fourth crew members is unknown. The Coast Guard had been working since early Sunday to rescue four South Korean crew members that were on the ship when it tipped onto its side in St. Simons Sound.Complicating efforts are the size of the 656-foot ship and the fact it has watertight doors, numerous compartments and no power, Coast Guard Petty Officer 1st Class Luke Clayton said.A call for helpThe first dispatches from the ship came at around 2 a.m. Sunday, VanderWeit said.South Korea's Foreign Ministry said the ship began "listing heavily," about 80 degrees, to the port side before overturning. Help arrived about two hours after the first call came in, VanderWeit said.Twenty members of the crew were rescued around 4 and 5 a.m., VanderWeit said. They exited via various parts of the vessel, which posed a challenge in getting them off the ship. Some crew members were hoisted onto helicopters while others were lowered — in some cases by fire hoses — onto boats, VanderWeit said.Fires broke out on the ship, preventing rescuers from continuing their efforts to save the remaining four crew members, said Capt. John Reed, commander of the Coast Guard Sector Charleston."As smoke and flames began to appear our crews, along with the Glynn County heavy rescue team, assessed that the situation was too risky to further go inside the vessel to attempt to locate the four individuals who remain missing at this time," Reed said. The Coast Guard remained on the scene, trying to stabilize the ship, and they continued to search the waters surrounding the vessel, VanderWeit said. The ship, sailing under the flag of the Marshall Islands, was bound for Baltimore, where it was expected to arrive Monday, according to 2023
