TARRANT COUNTY, Texas – A 7-year-old Texas boy temporarily living in a domestic violence shelter with his mom wrote a letter to Santa, the shelter shared, with a heartfelt plea for presents and something money can't buy.The boy asked Santa for chapter books, a dictionary, a compass and a watch -- but perhaps the biggest ask from the man in red was for a "very very very good dad."His mom found a handwritten letter in his backpack a few weeks ago and she shared it with SafeHaven of Tarrant County staff, a shelter for domestic violence victims in Fort Worth, Texas, its president and CEO Kathryn Jacob told CNN.SafeHaven shared the 647

The helicopter pilot who crashed on to the roof of a New York City building was not licensed to fly in poor weather, the Federal Aviation Administration said. The pilot, identified as Tim McCormack, died in the crash, law enforcement officials said."Pilots must have an instrument rating to fly in bad weather," an FAA spokeswoman said. "This pilot didn't have an instrument rating."An instrument rating requires about 100 or more hours of additional training on top of basic pilot training, CNN aviation analyst Mary Schiavo said.It helps pilots learn to fly without visual reference to the sky under instrument flight rules, by relying solely on instruments to "fly blind" in clouds or heavy fog under the direction of air traffic control, Schiavo said.At the time of Monday's flight, moderate to heavy rain was falling in the city, and visibility at Central Park was down to 1.25 miles. Winds were from the east at 9 mph.City officials said they were not sure what led the pilot to crash-land atop a building without a helipad.A typical afternoon inside the offices of a Midtown Manhattan skyscraper suddenly turned to chaos when the helicopter, 11 minutes into its flight, landed on the roof. The helicopter took off from East 34th Street Heliport about 1:32 p.m. Monday, New York police Commissioner James O'Neill said.Based on interviews investigators conducted at the East 34th Street Heliport on Manhattan's East Side, the pilot made statements that he believed he had a 5- to 7-minute break in the rainy weather to take off, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation. The pilot did not refuel at the heliport, the source added.Once the pilot was in the air, he radioed back to the heliport and said he needed to return. The last time the pilot communicated with the heliport he conveyed he was unsure of his location, the source said. The pilot then flew around Battery Park on the southern tip of Manhattan, up the west side of the island and then, somewhere around the streets in the 40s, started to veer toward Midtown Manhattan before crash-landing, the law enforcement source said.McCormack had flown for American Continental Properties, the company that owns the helicopter, for five years, according to a company statement.McCormack received his commercial pilot's license in 2004, according to Federal Aviation Administration records, and he was certified as a flight instructor for a rotorcraft-helicopter last year.In October 2014, the pilot was flying a helicopter over the Hudson River with six tourists on board when a bird struck and broke part of the windshield, according to 2637

The 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee champions have been named! Yes, there were more than one. In fact, there were a whopping EIGHT champions! For the first time ever in Scripps National Spelling Bee history, more than two Scripps National Spelling Bee champions were named. In a surprise announcement after Round 17 of the competition, official pronouncer Dr. Jacques Bailly announced there would only be three more rounds. “We are throwing the dictionary at you, and you are showing the dictionary who is boss,” says Dr. Bailly to the remaining spellers. The audience erupted in applause and gave a standing ovation to the eight incredible spellers, who remained as of 11:35 p.m. EST. They were Rishik Gandhasri of California, Erin Howard of Alabama, Saketh Sundar of Maryland, Shruthika Padhy of New Jersey, Sohum Sukhatankar of Texas, Abhijay Kodali of Texas, Christopher Serrao of Pennsylvania and Rohan Raja of Texas. The start of Round 20 began just before midnight EST. Rishik Gandhasri was first. After spelling auslaut correctly, he was named the first champion. The others followed suit:Erin Howard was named champion after spelling erysipelas correctly. Saketh Sundar was named champion after spelling bougainvillea correctly. Shruthika Padhy was named champion after spelling aiguillette correctly.Sohum Sukhatankarwas named champion after spelling pendeloque correctly.Abhijay Kodali was named champion after spelling palama correctly. Scripps Company, presented the new Scripps National Spelling Bee championship trophy to the eight winners. All the winners' names will be on this year's trophy. “Once again, the Bee was a thrilling competition that showcased the young spellers’ vast knowledge of vocabulary alongside their poise and composure,” said Symson. “These winners are tremendous champions deserving of the prizes, opportunities and recognition coming their way. Scripps takes great pride in seeing the positive influence the Bee has on millions of children across the U.S. and the world, and tonight’s historic competition is an excellent example of this.”Following the competition, the eight winners reacted to the historic moment they all were declared champions. “I really didn’t wanna be the one who didn’t make it to the championship, so yeah, that would’ve been really embarrassing,” says Erin Howard of Alabama. “But fortunately, that didn’t really happen to any of us.”“I was excited, pressured and worried,” Abhijay Kodali of Texas. Each winner will receive a ,000 cash prize. They will also travel to New York City to appear on Live with Kelly and Ryan and to Hollywood to be on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!It was a record-setting 92nd running of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with the number of spellers in the competition, the amount of the cash prize, and now, eight spelling champions. “This is a night to celebrate the remarkable academic achievement of a group of the world’s most talented spellers,” said Paige Kimble, executive director of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. “These spellers have conquered the dictionary unequivocally with their ability, skill and command of the English language. It’s an incredible achievement, and we salute all the years of hard work and dedicated study that brought these intelligent young people to the world stage. We congratulate them all.” 3746
