SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- High school sports in San Diego County and across California will happen during the 2020-21 school year but on a modified schedule that will push the start for fall sports, such as football, to early winter.The California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Monday released a schedule that shows the last date for Section and Regional/State Championships. Fall sports' championships, according to the schedule, shows end dates in March and April. The schedule shows spring sports, including soccer, basketball, and track and field, with championship end dates in May and June.CIF officials said that “most Section start dates will commence in December 2020 or January 2021.”In a press release posted on its website, the CIF San Diego Section said:The California Interscholastic Federation, San Diego Section (CIF-SDS) is excited to see the foundations of a plan to return high school athletics throughout the state of California for the 2020-2021 school year. Today’s announcement from the state office provides our section with the information necessary to finalize the calendars and schedules for all of our CIF regulated sports, while also acknowledging the importance of the health and safety of our student athletes and coaches by pushing the official start date back to align with the Roadmap to Recovery set by the state of California.Specifics of the plan provides for two seasons of sport, which will serve to maximize the length of each season while not eliminating any athletic opportunities in a reduced athletic calendar for the year. The adjusted calendar distributes the athletic offerings into a Fall/Winter Season, and a Spring Season in hope of balancing the opportunities for all student athletes.In collaboration with our Board of Managers, Conference Presidents, Sport Specific Advisory Committees and Officials Association, we will be coming together over the next couple weeks to finalize the dates and schedules for each of the seasons of sport for our section. Gavin Newsom announced reopening guidelines for schools across the state.Scripps Ranch High School head football coach Marlon Gardinera was one of many parents, coaches, and players who constantly checked the state CIF website Monday morning for any word on the fall sports season."We were waiting with bated breath,” Gardinera said.After learning there will be an opportunity for kids, including his high school senior and freshman sons, to play, Gardinera said, “It really gives us hope ... as opposed to not having a lot of it, really hard to do when you have two sons who are ready to get back out here.”The modified scheduling will force many student-athletes to choose between sports normally played successively.Gardinera told ABC 10News, “You have soccer and baseball ... [They’re] going to have to choose what sport they're going to want to play in that condensed season.”Otay Ranch High School football player Ethan Knight is excited that there is now a plan in place. "My birthday's in January, so it will be a good birthday present. I think it's great because it will be a new environment." Knight said he has used the months during the pandemic to train for the upcoming season. San Diego (KGTV) -- Hotel guest jolted awake after the Howard Johnson by Wyndham caught fire, early Tuesday morning.The fire erupted around 4:15 a.m. on El Cajon Blvd in the College East neighborhood.One of the rooms was destroyed, and two others were severely damaged, according to firefighters. At least 4 to 5 units are reported to be uninhabitable for various reasons.It took about 20 minutes to knock down the fire.One man staying in the unit right next to the fire, told ABC 10News he had to run right past the flames to escape.The entire hotel was evacuated, and everyone managed to get out safely. No one was hurt.Firefighters are trying to figure out if anyone was inside the unit when it caught fire. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hate crimes throughout San Diego County and across the state are rising at an alarming rate, according to new reports.Hate crimes between 2015 and 2017 rose 27 percent in San Diego County alone, a new report published in Law Enforcement Quarterly states.Statewide, hate crimes rose 44 percent between 2014 and 2017.A report from California’s Attorney General shows that San Diego County saw 95 hate crime incidents in 2017. That compared with 84 hate crimes countywide in 2016 and 72 in 2015.According to documents, anti-Semitic hate crime rose nearly 27 percent from 2016 to 2017 statewide. Hate crimes involving racial bias increased 16 percent within the same amount of time.The statistics come amid recent tragedies around the country, including a shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh Saturday that left 11 people dead. RELATED: Sign outside UCSD Jewish student center defacedThe rise in hate crimes also coincide with recent events in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Holiday Bowl officials said Thursday that its 43rd annual football game will not be played this year.Due to the pandemic, the bowl's Board of Directors voted unanimously to cancel the December game, which has been played since 1978. The bowl’s traditional Bowl Week events had already been canceled for this year, including the Holiday Bowl Parade.Holiday Bowl CEO Mark Neville said that in addition to challenges in holding the game safely for fans, the virus had, "created a situation in that we wouldn’t be able to welcome fans, ultimately resulting in no tourism. Couple that with the financial and potential health risks of trying to play the game during this pandemic and it was clear this was the right decision for us.""This has been the most difficult decision our Board has ever had to make since our bowl game started in 1978," said Neville. "While it’s not the decision we wanted to make, it’s the right decision for our non-profit association and the community for the long term."The game has brought in an average million in economic benefit and led to more than 28,000 hotel room nights annually for the region, the board said. December is typically San Diego's slowest tourism period."People come in, either stay here, or they come to the restaurants, they enjoy a cocktail or a bite to eat, whether it be lunch or dinner," said Chuck Abbott, general manager of the Intercontinental, which overlooks the Holiday Bowl Parade along the waterfront.
