PHOENIX, Ariz. - It’s not your traditional mechanic shop. It’s a car garage operated by women for women, so they can learn the skills to enter the auto industry and empower them to break barriers.“We have women who have come through who are talented bakers who found that the welding technique for TIG was pretty similar to baking cake. We also had women who were nail technicians who found the bodywork to be one to one with other life experiences that they had,” expressed Shawnda Williams, co-owner of Girl Gang Garage.Williams was once a ‘newbie’ at Girl Gang Garage but soon became passionate about the garage’s mission that she became a business partner with Bogi Lateiner.Now both women run Girl Gang Garage, a place that welcomes anyone looking to try something different.“When we teach these women how to work on these vehicles they’re really learning that this thing that they were afraid of isn’t so scary after all. And if that’s not so scary then what else in their life may not be so scary after all,” stated Lateiner.Whether it is mechanical work, welding, or body and paint. Any woman entering this garage will leave with a new trade skill, but also with a mission. To change the under-representation of women in the automotive industry.“We’re bringing a diverse population of people together to work on a common thing and when I say diversity, I mean people from different ages, different races. Me, as a black female, you don’t see a lot in the automobile industry period let alone doing classic car restorations,” said Williams.Being part of Girl Gang Garage is also an opportunity to feel embraced no matter who you are or where you’re from.“They’re getting a different sense of empowerment. They’re feeling inspired and reenergized about what they do because they’re validated seeing other people like them,” said Lateiner.And if anyone dares to tell you this job is only for men, Williams says, “any person who can grow, produce, raise a child, cry with a child, nurse a child, can do anything that they put their mind to. You’re built for that. There’s nothing biologically that impairs a woman from picking up a wrench and trying to do whatever they want to do.”To give you an idea, every classic car on display at Girl Gan Garage was built by women.“A lot of the women had zero experience, so they’re getting thrown into hands-on learning everything. They’re learning that they can weld that they can use tools and cut things and to not be intimidated by this stuff. (KGTV) - A Pine Valley restaurant owner is defying San Diego County orders to move his restaurant outside, saying he will continue to ignore the purple tier rules to keep his business afloat.When it was announced that San Diego County would move into the more restrictive purple tier, Major’s Diner owner Larry McNamer told ABC 10News he had plans to stay open inside, even though all restaurants are required to move outside completely. He stayed true to his word, operating indoors, saying he still follows social distancing practices, but needs the inside space because his restaurant is only open for breakfast and lunch, and the winter months bring temperatures in the 30s for the mountain community.“They’re saying they wanted us back outside and we said no absolutely not, not going to do it,” said McNamer.RELATED: "We are over it." OTAY MESA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six correctional officers and two inmates at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility were hospitalized Sunday after officials said a group of prisoners attacked the officers in a recreation yard.The incident was reported at the prison just before 4 p.m., according to the California Department of Correction and Rehabilitation. About 20 inmates were in the facility's recreation yard when some began to attack the officers.The six officers suffered stab wounds, lacerations, and possible broken bones and were taken to a nearby hospital. Their conditions were not immediately known.Two inmates were also taken to outside hospitals for treatment. Other inmates involved were taken to the prison's medical facility for treatment.Officials are not sure how many inmates were involved in the attack, but say that they ignored commands to stop, forcing less-lethal measures to be used. A warning shot was fired and additional officers responded to the yard.Several weapons were reportedly recovered at the scene.The four suspects were identified as Joe Mendez, 39, Luis Delgado, 24, Michael Figueroa, 20, and William Barba, 41. Those involved could also face charges of attempted murder of a peace officer.Nearly one year ago, five inmates were injured in a riot involving about 80 inmates at the prison. Prior to that, three inmates suffered stab wounds in a seven-on-one fight in the facility in April 2019. In February 2019, a fight between 50 inmates left at least 10 prisoners injured.According to the prison's reports online, 204 use of force incidents were reported in 2019. PINE VALLEY, Calif. — A suspected human smuggler was sentenced to 30 months in prison for barreling through a Border Patrol checkpoint, narrowly missing vehicles and severely injuring a border agent.Jorge Garcia-Osornio, 28, of Michoacán, Mexico, was charged with transporting certain aliens and aiding and abetting from the Nov. 14, 2017 incident.Border officials said Garcia was illegally in the U.S. when he approached a Pine Valley border checkpoint with two illegal immigrants hidden in the floor of his vehicle. As he neared the line of cars waiting, Garcia made an illegal U-turn and began driving in the opposite direction on the freeway, officials said.Agents began to pursue Garcia before he made another U-turn and headed back toward the checkpoint at speeds reaching 100 miles per hour.As he reached the checkpoint, officials said Garcia narrowly missed two vehicles and a border agent, and blasted through a metal sign, sending debris in all directions.“In committing his criminal act, Garcia not only placed the lives of those he smuggled in grave danger, but seriously injured a Border Patrol agent in the process,” Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott.That debris severely injured a nearby agent, who likened the blow to being "hit with a baseball bat." The agent was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and has yet to return to duty.Garcia continued on for another three and a half miles at high speeds before exited a freeway and crashing into a hillside.
