On November 26, 2003, Centra “CeCe” Mazyc says she was doing a routine jump in the Army when the wind caused her parachute to collide with another jumper and as she hit the ground, she was instantly paralyzed from the waist down.Mazyc is one of nearly 5 million disabled American veterans, but she's hardly let her serious injury hold her back.Through the help of the nonprofit Disabled American Veterans, she was able to get back into her athletic nature.“It was the first time in my injury that I was able to do things like ski and walk, climb and scuba dive, things that I didn't know that I’d ever be able to do,” said Mazyc. “So, that was an important step in my rehabilitation process, and it proved to me that physical disability does not bar the doors to freedom at all, not mine.”That support and Mazyc’s competitive drive took her all the way to the 2012 Paralympic Games, where she threw the javelin.Disabled American Veterans helps more than 1 million veterans a year with things like access to education, health care and employment.They also provided unemployment financial relief during the pandemic to laid off veterans.Disabled American Veterans produced a new documentary around 100 years of war and wounded servicemen and women. OCEANSIDE, Calif. - A U.S. Border Patrol agent was arrested in North San Diego County on suspicion of possessing heroin and a short-barrel rifle, Oceanside Police reported Tuesday.Officers were patrolling an apartment complex on Los Arbolitos Blvd. where a suspicious person had been reported last week. That's when they reportedly found Brandon Herrera. He was passed out in the driver’s seat of a Ford pickup truck parked on a nearby street, police said.Oceanside Police said they found more than five grams of heroin and a weapon at the scene.The U.S. Border Patrol confirmed with Scripps station KGTV in San Diego it is gathering information about the report.Herrera is due in court April 17. 719

OCEANSIDE (KGTV) -- It's a 3,100-mile bike ride that starts from the Oceanside Pier Tuesday morning at 10 a.m. Buzz Ponce, 69, will be riding his bike coast to coast from Oceanside to St. Augustine, Florida.  He is doing it to raise money for the Warrior's Heart Foundation. The foundation helps active military members, veterans and first responders dealing PTSD, alcohol abuse and drug addiction. Buzz says he started planning the bike ride two years ago. At first, he says it was all about seeing if he could do it, but then realized it would be better if he could use it to help others. "It really flashed on me that I should do something other than just about me. And that’s when I came across the idea of trying to raise money for a cause," Ponce said. The organization has a treatment center in San Antonio.  Ponce says his goal is to raise ,000 to hopefully start a scholarship for people that need to travel to the center.People can donate Buzz's cause here. If all goes as scheduled, Buzz will be in St. Augustine on July 1.  1091

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are asking the public's help to identify a man suspected of trying to lure a child away from her mother at a North County Walmart.Oceanside Police said the incident occurred on Sept. 6 after a juvenile female and her mom shopping at the Walmart location at 705 College Boulevard reported a stolen cell phone.Police said security footage showed a man following the pair around the store and taking the juvenile's cell phone from their cart when they were not looking. The mother and daughter reported the phone stolen to security, according to police."Shortly after the girl and her mom reported the lost phone to security, the male started conversing with the juvenile and stated he had her phone in his vehicle," Bussey said.The man started talking with the juvenile, police said, and stated he had her cell phone in his vehicle, a white hatchback, possibly a Hyundai Elantra GT."The male was possibly attempting to lure the juvenile to his vehicle to retrieve the phone," OPD said in a release."I watch really closely. I've got a younger guy so he stays attached to my hip; thank goodness but this is gonna make me even more vigilant.
