The calf, the 9th birthed by Funani since she arrived at the Zoo, is yet to be given a name."Less than ten minutes after it was born, it was already on the beach," Senior Wildlife Care Specialist Jennifer Chapman told 10News. "Out of the pool, on the beach, so right away we knew this was a strong calf."Funani can already be seen exhibiting the behaviors of hippo mothers, including licking sand off her calf, nudging her into the water, and making sure she is coming up to the surface for air. "That bond is already starting and she can start to train the calf immediately," Chapman said. "This is where you go. This is where you don't go. Listen to me. And she goes through all of that with the calf and it's really from minute one."Because Funani is very protective of the calf, the father, Otis, is being kept in a separate area from the other two. They will eventually rotate into the publicly-facing part of the habitat.The last calf born at the Zoo was a male named Tony in 2017. Because hippo mothers typically lose interest in their offspring when they begin preparing to resume mating, Tony was sent to a different zoo in 2019. 1318

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A California woman is accusing a San Diego CEO of gaining her trust and then decimating her entire life's savings. The woman, Marieme Bouguerba, is being represented by San Diego attorney Charles Field, a partner with Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP "She's devastated. You have a single mother who lives with her parents, and she's trying to make things go and to have her entire life savings decimated like this is a major setback for her - both financially and emotionally," said Field.The lawsuit claims Mark Bernier trolls dating websites for vulnerable, high net worth women as part of his investment scams. It goes on to say he advertises himself as a licensed investment professional, attempts to build trust and confidence, and then aggressively seeks to separate the women from their money through purported investments.Bernier is listed as CEO for San Diego-based venture capital firm, VentureMoney Management Co. Field says his client met Bernier on the dating website MillionaireMatch.com, a site designed to help successful people find love. Field says Bernier has exchanged over 29,000 messages with over 3,000 women through the Millionaire Match website, to sell them worthless securities. "Well I think that's the mark of a good salesman, is that a good salesman can make a good pitch, can make a convincing pitch, and when it's backed by a legitimate looking website that has very prominent people on there, all that combined led her to believe that this was reputable," said Field.Field says Bernier scammed his client out of 0,000. While they received 0,000 back during mediation, Field says they are not being told where the rest of the money is."It seems reputable, when you look at the website it seems like he's [Bernier] trying to do good things, that's what it appears. But like I said, we asked where the money is, we asked what it was invested in, where it went, and we have not gotten any answers," said Field. Their lawsuit accuses Bernier of not even having a license to sell securities or give investment advice in California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 10News investigation has revealed that the California department responsible for the state’s child welfare program does not maintain data regarding all deaths of children in foster care.  The revelation is prompting calls for immediate action to child welfare services from at least one San Diego-based politician.State law requires counties to report any child death that is determined to be suspected to be the result of abuse or neglect to the California Department of Social Services.  According to the CDSS, each county in California is required to keep track of every foster child that dies while in its custody.Counties are also responsible for reporting all high profile incidents that occur in foster homes to the State Department of Social Services. High profile incidents would include incidents involving death or serious injury. But the CDSS has no master data list available regarding foster deaths and says that information is maintained at the county level.Using open records laws Team 10 collected the total number fatalities of children residing in a foster placement from all 58 counties in the state since 2010.The numbers show more than 250 kids died during that time across the state. 1290

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Two men conspired with five other people in a series of home-invasion robberies in northern San Diego in which sleeping residents were roused at gunpoint and tied up, and one woman was sexually assaulted, a prosecutor said Wednesday.Deputy District Attorney Jalyn Wang told a jury that Thomas James Smith and Aaron Rico III were part of robbery crew dubbed the "Open Door Bandits," so named because in most of the 10 break-ins, the robbers gained access to homes through an unlocked door.Wang alleged that Smith, 26, and Rico, 22, were two of the major players in the robbery crew.A third major player, Stephen Ramon Gomez, pleaded guilty in the case.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodFour other defendants, Aaron Rico V, Victor Harvey, Robin Shawver and Jordan Wilson, also pleaded guilty.Wang alleged the home-invasion series began the night of Jan. 23, 2016, when Smith, Gomez and Shawver used garage door openers they found in cars to get into two residences in Mira Mesa, where they stole items including an X- box gaming system.On Jan. 26, 2016, at about 1:20 a.m., a man returned to his residence in Carmel Mountain Ranch after taking a friend home and saw that his house was being ransacked, the prosecutor said. The man chased one of the robbers, but could not catch him, Wang said.The DNA of Smith and Gomez was found on items left at the scene, according to the prosecutor.Three nights later, on Jan. 29, 2016, the bandits gained access to a home in Scripps Ranch through an unlocked door and robbed a family at gunpoint, yelling, "Where's the money? Where's the jewelry? Where's the gold?" Wang said in her opening statement.Smith, Gomez, Rico III and Harvey were charged in that break-in, Wang said.On Jan. 31, 2016, a woman was awakened at gunpoint in her Sorrento Valley home, tied up and sexually assaulted by one or two of the defendants, according to the prosecutor. The perpetrators allegedly took jewelry off the woman's body and threatened to shoot her.Wang said Gomez pawned the woman's wedding ring and his DNA was found on a pillow case on her bed.On Feb. 5, 2016, Smith and Rico III broke into a home in Rancho Bernardo through an unlocked door and held a couple at gunpoint while ransacking the residence, Wang told the jury.The night of Feb. 11, 2016, four homes in  Carmel Mountain Ranch and Sabre Springs were broken in to, including three in the same neighborhood, the prosecutor said.In one robbery, a barking dog alerted a sleeping couple to intruders, and the wife's 911 call forced the suspects to flee, Wang said.In another break-in, the robbers tied up a family -- including a 2- year-old who had his wrists taped together -- and spent an hour ransacking the home before leaving, the prosecutor said.Smith's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Damian Lowe, said that once police determined the crimes were connected, they started to follow a number of suspects, not including his client.Lowe said "significant" mistakes were made in the investigation of the robbery series.He told the jury the case would come down to "what evidence is going to prove beyond a reasonable doubt as to who did what?"Smith and Rico III face life in prison if convicted of conspiracy to commit burglary, robbery, burglary and sexual assault. 3302
