House Democrats will vote on a legislative package to reopen the government when they take over the chamber on Thursday, a Democratic aide confirms to CNN.The Democrats plan to vote on six Senate spending bills and a stopgap measure to re-open the Homeland Security Department at its current funding levels until February 8, the aide said. The temporary measure would maintain the current .3 billion in border security money.Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has made clear he will not move forward on any legislation until President Donald Trump signs off on it. The move by House Democrats, however, will have the effect of jamming Senate Republicans and the White House as talks for a compromise agreement to reopen the government remain at an impasse.Senate Democrats support the House Democratic plan, and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and expected incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have been in constant contact and are on the same page on the plan, a senior Senate Democratic aide said.Democrats believe it's smart to separate Department of Homeland Security funding — and the wall fight — from the other six bills because they think it puts Trump and the Republicans in the position of holding the other agencies and furloughed workers hostage for the wall, the aide said. Democrats believe pressure will mount on Republicans as the shutdown drags on, the aide said. 1402

He may be 102 years old, but John Sekulich has the energy to tell you stories about his time in the Army during World War II until you’re blue in the face.“A lot of things happen during the war, you know?” Sekulich says from his home in a Denver suburb. “A lot of crazy things.”He could tell you about working throughout the nights, in blackout conditions, repairing U.S. communication lines cut by the Germans. He could tell you about the time fellow soldiers ran over a nearby hill to warn him of German troops that had just killed dozens of Americans. “Rain, shine or snow, didn’t matter,” he says. “We were out there, trying to repair them lines.”But the story he remembers better than any other was from his trip home, after the war had ended. His father was critically ill, and the military arranged a special flight so he could get home faster.Except the flight—from Greenland to New York-- came eerily close to crash and landing in the Atlantic.“One engine went out,” Sekulich recalls. “So, we’re flying along and about noon, the second engine went out.”But despite only having two of the four engines on that bomber, they landed safely. It was his final memory of the war, and it’s one that now—almost 75 years later—he’ll get to re-live.Thanks to Colorado-based non-profit 1294

For three historically black churches in the heart of south central Louisiana's Cajun and Creole country, Sunday services will not be the same. The churches in rural St. Landry Parish -- about 30 miles north of Lafayette -- have burned since March 26 in what officials have described as "suspicious circumstances.""There is clearly something happening in this community," State Fire Marshal H. Browning said in a statement.Standing outside the charred remains of the Greater Union Baptist Church in Opelousas -- which burned on Tuesday -- Pastor Harry Richard said he looked forward to meeting elsewhere with his congregation on Sunday."Quite naturally, something like this would shake us up," he told CNN affiliate 727

General Mills, the maker of Gold Medal flour, has recalled 5-pound bags of its unbleached all-purpose flour for possible E. coli O26 contamination, the FDA announced on Monday. The bags of flour have an expiration date of Sept. 6, 2020. The package UPC is: 016000 196100. There have been no reported illnesses, and General Mills said the recall is out of an abundance of caution. Those with recalled products are encouraged to throw out the flour, and contact General Mills at 1-800-230-8103. The FDA added that all flour should not be consumed raw, and that fully cooking flour kills of E. coli. "Although most strains of E. coli are harmless, others can make you sick. E. coli O26 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration," the FDA said. "Seniors, the very young, and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness." 909
