BEIJING, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Food poisoning in China killed 56 and sickened 2,452 others between January and May this year, the Ministry of Health said here Wednesday.In a report posted on its website, the ministry said 27 people, about half of the deaths, were killed by food poisoning at home.The deaths were mainly caused by the consumption of poisonous vegetables and pesticide- or poison-contaminated food.There were 68 cases of food poisoning at employee and student cafeterias nationwide in the five months resulting in the poisoning of almost 1,650 people and the deaths of 18. Bacteria-induced food poisoning and improperly cooked kidney beans were the main causes.Seven people were killed by excessive intakes of nitrite, a substance with an appearance similar to salt which can be used as a meat preservatives.The report urged food manufacturers to ensure food safety in accordance with law and called on the public to raise food safety self-awareness levels.

MOSCOW, June 21 (Xinhua) -- China has played a role of great importance during the founding and development of G20, Russian presidential aide Arkady Dvorkovich said on Monday."Without China's participation, it would be much more difficult for the group to discuss or solve the developmental problems of world economy. Therefore, the participation of China, as well as some other emerging economies like Brazil and India, has become prominently significant," Dvorkovich commented after a news conference ahead of the upcoming G8 and G20 summit in Toronto, Canada.The presidential aide said the Chinese leaders' stance and viewpoints, proposed in the previous three G20 financial summit since November 2008, have helped stabilize the world economy as a whole.Dvorkovich noted that China's decision on further exchange rate reform was not outcome of external pressure.He said that any country, including Russia, China and the United States, could not allow their domestic policies to be ruled by external factors. BEIJING, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters (SFDH) has sent four working teams Monday to help flood control in provinces and regions pounded by heavy rains that triggered floods and mud slides.The flood control authority held a meeting Monday night with the Ministry of Water Resources agreeing to dispatch one more working team to central Hunan Province to help consolidate river banks along the upper reaches of the Xiangjiang River and ensure the safety of reservoirs.Three other teams were separately sent Monday afternoon to Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and the eastern province of Fujian.From 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, torrential rains pelted Guangxi, provinces of Guangdong, Fujian, Hunan and Jiangxi. Some regions even saw rainstorms, according to the SFDH.At least 24 people are missing after flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains engulfed two vehicles in Fujian Province Monday, according to a local official.The authority asked the Guangxi team to help with floods control and mud slides prevention work there. It ordered the team sent to Fujian to help with rescue work.The team for Xinjiang will help investigate the collapse of a reservoir dam in Xinjiang on Monday morning after heavy rains on the previous night.The local government had evacuated more than 200 families living downstream the reservoir. No casualties are reported so far.
