SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego’s elderly population, those 85 and older, is expected to soar by more than 400 percent by 2060, according to new data from the State of California. The data means many more Californians will be faced with helping their parents at the same time they’re trying to stash money away for retirement. 10News spoke with experts to take a look at ways to manage. As the population ages, more and more San Diegans will fall into the sandwich generation. Amrine understands. For a decade, she financially supported her mother’s care, which totaled half a million dollars. She says the bulk of the burden falls on families. “Mostly you'll be paying out of your own pocket. Nursing home fees are expected to reach more than 3,000 per year for a private room by 2035. Both Amrine and Linda Urbina with Golden Care have advice for the sandwich generation: Even if you’re simultaneously helping mom and dad, stay focused on a savings plan and look into your own long-term care options. “Be proactive, talk to a financial planner, the older you get the more they will cost you. So we're hoping that pace program will keep people at home.”And there are VA benefits for both veterans and their spouses. The combined benefit can total ,100 per month. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego’s unemployment rate fell to 2.9 percent in April, the lowest rate yet in this century.1,577,000 people were part of the San Diego labor force last month, according to the California Employment Development Department.Only 46,200 people did not have jobs.California’s unemployment rate was at 4.2 percent in April, the lowest level since 1976.San Francisco and Marin Counties had the lowest unemployment rate of 2.1 percent.The highest unemployment rates were in Colusa County, at 15 percent, and Imperial County, at 14.4 percent. 565

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Seven people were displaced following a house fire in Mountain View early Saturday morning, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.The fire was reported just after 3:30 a.m. on Teak Street near Ocean View Boulevard. Crews quickly responded and were able to get the blaze under control. The home that burned sits on a lot with a second home in front, and the front house was not damaged.Family and residents of the front house said they believe the fire started from a washer/dryer unit. They also said that they had to pull bars off of a window to help people escape, with those outside pulling and those inside kicking on the bars. Four people were were hurt after climbing through the broken window.Crews say a total of seven people were displaced and the American Red Cross was called in to help, but family on scene said everyone is okay. They said the hardest part is realizing they lost everything, including Christmas presents that the two little girls who lived in the burned home had just unwrapped the day before.The family started a GoFundMe to raise money following the fire. 1112

Tickets for the dining experience go on sale Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. online.Diners who grab a ticket will enjoy a three-course menu prepared by an acclaimed chef. While San Diego's chef has yet to be announced, Toronto's pop-up was led by Canada "Top Chef" winner René Rodriguez.A blind menu featuring meat, fish, and vegan options will be served to guests. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some local colleges are shifting toward a new policy of getting rid of standardized test scores as an admissions requirement.The University of San Diego is one of 60 other colleges, including local Cal State and University of California campuses, now using the "test blind" policy amid a pandemic-altered high school experience and education.The SAT has been something on Laila Ellyse's mind for some time now. She says part of her concern recently has been COVID-19-related restrictions on testing group sizes."You've been hearing about it for such a long time you have to take the SAT, it's like this big bad test," Ellyse said. "The number of seats available at any given test site is now reduced because of social distancing and all of those kinds of things." Ellyse says she had to go all the way to Utah to take the test because there were no testing site options in California. Standardized testing has also become increasingly debate following the nationwide college admissions scandal, in which several parents were charged with paying to get their kids admitted to top tier colleges.That's part of the reason USD is now a test blind campus. While SAT or ACT scores can be admitted, they'll be ignored for admission. Instead, college officials will consider other factors including high school academic record and GPA, letters of recommendation, admission essays, extra-curricular involvement, work experiences, and family responsibilities.USD says it hopes the new policy will make the admissions process fair and equitable for all students and allow lower-income students who may face barriers to accessing testing an even playing field.The test blind policy may not be permanent though. UCSD is test-optional until 2022 and test blind until 2024. San Diego State and local CSU campuses are test blind for 2021 only at the moment. 1868
