SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thousands of Californians gathered Saturday night across the state to protest the newest restrictions put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom to slow the spread of the coronavirus.Last Saturday, Syndie Ly helped organize the first "Curfew Breakers" rally. "Across 16 cities, we had 10,000 people show up," she said.Ly lives in Huntington Beach and said in four days their Facebook page "blew up."She said people are frustrated by the curfew from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. saying it is an overreach, "when the government starts telling you when you can leave the house, how many people you can invite over to your own home."What's happening in the U.S. reminds her of when her family escaped in Vietnam."I was born in China and my parents emigrated to Vietnam, and we came here [to the U.S.] legally but we came here as refugees to escape North Vietnam during the fall of Vietnam ... Just being told what to do, a lot of the government overreach, I feel we're actually on the brink of getting back to that and that's why I'm involved in this," said Ly.She said between layoffs and businesses being forced to close, the impact on people's livelihoods is worse than the virus itself."It's our lives, and we feel we are responsible individuals that can make our own decisions," Ly said. The rallies will continue every Saturday, starting at 10:01 p.m. until Ly and the organizers see change, she added. In San Diego, a rally is planned for Saturday at 10:01 p.m. at 910 N. Harbor Drive. 1497

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department says it paid out nearly million in overtime throughout the course of protests and riots in the county.According to the department, ,862,798 was paid out from May 28 through June 4, 2020.The department said more than 24,000 hours were worked throughout the protests. The figure includes overtime for sworn deputies and support staff. They added that, throughout the protests and riots, no one had time off, and that all vacation time was canceled during the unrest. The news comes after rioters set fire to several buildings and vehicles in La Mesa in late May.Several stores were also looted, including Walmart, Target, Vons, and other stores and shopping centers. 737

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The race for California's 50th Congressional District is zeroing in on two candidates following Super Tuesday.Former City Councilmember Carl DeMaio conceded Tuesday, leaving the path clear for the March Primary's top two vote-getters Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar and Former Republican Rep. Darrell Issa."While I am disappointed, I am filled with two other emotions: gratitude for supporters like you and pride in the incredible campaign we ran," DeMaio's statement read. "In the coming days I will share more details of how we will deploy our political operation as we pivot to the November election and hope you will be willing to continue to be involved in the fight."Campa-Najjar topped the nine-candidate field with 36 percent of the vote, followed by Issa with 23 percent, DeMaio with 20 percent, and Sen. Brian Jones with 11 percent. The traditionally conservative 50th Congressional District once led by Rep. Duncan Hunter was left vacant following Hunter's guilty plea to misusing 0,000 in campaign funds and resignation in January. In a statement, Issa thanked DeMaio and Jones on hard-fought campaigns.“Carl DeMaio and Brian Jones both worked hard in this campaign to present voters with their vision for the future of our country. They deserve credit for a hard-fought campaign, and I appreciate that they’ve both expressed their commitment to uniting to make sure the 50th District continues to be represented by a Republican," Issa said in a statement. 1493

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The world's only two platypuses to live outside of Australia now call the San Diego Zoo Safari Park home. The zoo recently received the two platypuses — a male named Birrarung that hatched in 2011 and female named Eve that hatched in 2004 — from Taronga Zoo Sydney. The animals were flown to San Diego in crates specially designed for platypuses, according to San Diego Zoo Global. Here the two animals will live in the Safari Park's Walkabout Australia habitat, where a special home has been constructed for them.RELATED: San Diego Zoo's endangered tree kangaroo joey emerges from mother's pouchPlatypuses are semi-aquatic animals that live in freshwater habitats. In San Diego, the zoo says they will be ambassadors for the species outside of their native Australia and advocate the "importance of freshwater for both humans and wildlife."Australian conservationists have been working to determine the status of the animal in the wild using environmental DNA, or trace DNA found in their habitats.“Overall, platypuses were detected at 38 percent of sites sampled in Victoria and 32 percent of those in New South Wales,” said Josh Griffiths, a senior wildlife ecologist. “Although it is still too early to draw many conclusions from this raw data, some trends are emerging. For instance, higher platypus occurrence is associated with native vegetation cover, high in-stream complexity (providing good habitat for macroinvertebrates) and suitable burrowing habitat.”RELATED: Historic in vitro southern white rhino birth is first for San Diego Zoo, in the U.S.Part of the challenge for researchers is investigating dry conditions found throughout the country. The "eDNA" method is helping scientists determine the presence of the generally shy, nocturnal species. The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species recently changed the status of the platypus from a "species of least concern" to "near threatened."Australian researchers say the eDNA study helps them determine the impacts of environmental threats like land use, altered water flow, and habitat degradation where platypus populations are detected. They hope that data allows them to effectively protect the species from becoming more endangered in the future. 2281
