SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Washington Nationals will look to a former San Diego State Aztec to lead them into Game 2 of the 2019 World Series.Nationals starter Stephen Strasburg takes the mound Wednesday night against the Astros, dueling with Houston ace Justin Verlander. Washington took Game 1 Tuesday night 5-4 to open the series, the team's first World Series appearance and game won on the grandest stage in baseball. Now as Strasburg makes his World Series debut, San Diegans will be watching and rooting for the former Aztecs star.RELATED: SDSU's Jalen McDaniels starts NBA season on Hornets rosterMark Martinez, Strasburg's pitching coach during his time in San Diego, said the pitcher has been heavily involved in the university's baseball program since leaving for the big leagues. "He knows a lot of our guys. He comes and works out in the off-season. So he's connected to our program so there's a big sense of pride with our guys," Martinez, now team head coach, told reporters Tuesday. "You can hear them out there talking about Stephen. He's just done so much for our program, you know, being involved with our guys. And backing them not just on the baseball field but in life lessons as well."Strasburg was named to the SDSU Hall of Fame in 2014, boasting college records for the most strikeouts in a game (23), in a season (195), and in a college career (375). He also holds the SDSU record for lowest career ERA at 1.59. During his senior year, he marked his final collegiate home appearance by pitching a no-hitter.RELATED: Padres focus new manager hire between two candidatesLike his college career, Strasburg's MLB post season has been nothing short of impressive. He walks into Game 2 with a 3-0 record in the playoffs, pitching a 1.64 ERA. He ended the regular season with a 18-6 record, a career high. The ball is in Strasburg's court — well, glove — now."You know it's going to be a storm out there. You're going to weather it," Strasburg told the Associated Press ahead of his start. And Strasburg now joins some recent Aztecs who have also notched MLB post season appearances. The last SDSU alumnus to appear in a World Series game was former outfielder Quintin Berry with the 2013 Boston Red Sox, according to Baseball-Reference.com. Also hailing from SDSU, Cleveland Indians outfielder Greg Allen played in the 2018 American League Division Series and former Red Sox pitcher Addison Reed took the mound during the 2017 ALDS.Martinez and players will host a watch party for Strasburg's start at the Mission Valley's Oggi's Pizza and Brewhouse at 5 p.m. Wednesday. 2590

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is new hope for women who were told they could never get pregnant. A local clinic is offering groundbreaking fertility procedures you won't find anywhere else. For 48-year-old Cherie Friesth, this Carmel Valley clinic is giving her hope. "This just gives you a little help and a boost towards that goal," said Friesth. She's already a mother of four and a grandmother of eight, but she wants one more. RELATED: New IVF technology to debut at San Diego clinic"It’s the best thing," said Friesth. "This will make it nice that [my son] has someone to look out for and play with."She came all the way from Iowa for Ovarian Rejuvenation. Gen 5 Fertility helps women increase their chances of getting pregnant through Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP. Dr. Samuel Wood is giving them hope. Most of his patients are over the age of 42. "In most cases these women have gone to other fertility centers and have been told 'you have no chance, we’re not going to work with you'", said Wood. The procedure works by isolating platelets from the blood and injecting them back into the ovaries. It helps recruit stem cells that can turn into eggs. RELATED: CDC: IVF births expected to skyrocket this century"We actually dramatically increase the chance that they will have a normal embryo," said Wood. "When you put a normal embryo in then the chance is extremely high; 80 to 90 percent."For Friesth, it's been a year-long process. "Especially with my age, this is a delicate procedure and I didn’t want to be a guinea pig," said Friesth. "I just keep smiling and thinking it's going to be worth it."Her doctor says her chances are pretty good. "She did not do well in terms of egg number, but it improved the quality of the egg so that we got an embryo that was actually normal in a woman who is 48 years old, and that’s extremely unusual," said Wood. RELATED: Having a baby in your 40s isn’t so uncommon anymore, but there are still risksThe procedure is giving hope when it seemed impossible. "If she succeeds, she will be the oldest patient to ever succeed through IVF," said Wood. "So we’re all very excited and anxious to see how things go.""In the end it's gotta pay out," said Friesth. "If it doesn’t, than it wasn’t meant to be and we tried."Friesth told 10News the procedure cost her around ,000. She will find out if she's pregnant by the end of November. 2381

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thirty roosters abandoned last month are in need of a new home. The roosters were left at an Escondido feed store on Dec. 28, 2019, with a note from the owner explaining they could no longer take care of them, the San Diego Humane Society says.SDHS says the roosters all appear to be healthy and social with each other and humans.Anyone interested in adopting the roosters can do so through SDHS' Escondido campus. Officials advise potential new owners to check with their city to make sure they are allowed to have a rooster, as some city ordinances prohibit the animals.Anyone who is unable to care for their pets are also advised to take them to a SDHS campus rather than abandoning them. SDHS is an open shelter and will never turn an animal away. 777

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Thousands of people visited Seaport Village Saturday to watch outdoor entertainers at the 14th Annual Busker Fest 2020. As the fear of coronavirus spreads, attendees of the festival seemed unbothered by it.Gather around! Let your eyes and ears feast on the marvels of jugglers, daredevils, and aerialists."Buskers have always been a big part of our history down at Seaport Village," Scott Andrews, Marketing Director of Seaport Village, said. Coming to the festival has become a seven-year tradition for Shannon Steward and her nine-year-old son, Aiden. "I like supporting the street performers!" Stewart said. "I never even knew what a busker was until I found out about this festival."New this year: Busker University. It's a special place where kids can learn about art and busking skills. One of the most popular booths is the slime station. Children can make slime by mixing Borax, water, and glue. After playing at the slime station, the kids are encouraged to wash their hands by using either baby wipes or hand sanitizer.Ahead of the event, San Diego Port Authority added hand-washing stations all along the Embarcadero, to quell growing fears of the coronavirus. Regardless, Stewart said good hygiene is something she always preaches to her family. "We are making sure we are washing our hands, not touching too many things, but obviously, we are kind of diving into the slime and no big deal!" Stewart said. She said she is not going to let fear and hysteria ruin their fun."It's at the forefront of our minds, but it's not changing too much of what we are doing right now," Stewart said. "Now, that may change in a couple of weeks. But for right now, we are living in the moment, enjoying the things that we've always done, and the tradition at the busker festival."The Busker Fest continues Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. at Seaport Village. 1877
