HONG KONG, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong stocks gained 45.12 points, or 0.21 percent to close Wednesday's trading at 22,047.71.The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 22,229.18 and 22, 021.6 on a turnover of 69.08 billion HK dollars (about 8.9 billion U.S. dollars).All the four sub-indices of the benchmark index landed in the positive territory, with properties advancing the most by rising 1. 2 percent.Heavyweight HSBC slid 0.49 percent to 81.1 HK dollars, extending its falling streak to the third day this week. The nation's telecom giant China Mobile gained 0.38 percent to 79.8 HK dollars. BEIJING, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- Participants at a human rights forum in Beijing have paid tribute to China's treatment of human rights issues."We have a different culture. The Chinese have a different culture. We would appreciate the situation where human rights are dealt with within their own cultural contexts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol, a Norwegian participant on a panel discussion at the forum, said Wednesday.The panel discussion was a part of the two-day Beijing Forum on Human Rights that started Tuesday. The forum attracted about 80 officials, scholars and experts from more than 25 countries, regions and international organizations.China's human rights situation was one of the focal points at the forum."It is highly important to reflect and discuss the key issues of human rights worldwide. People now can come and see how China develops. Ignorance and lack of information were the root causes for many conflicts," Elisabeth Perioli Bjornstol added.Jiang Guoqing, a professor from China Foreign Affairs University, said on the same panel discussion that since reform and opening up was initiated in 1978, China has made great progress in both human rights and modernization.He Ying, vice president of Heilongjiang University, said, "The West often criticizes China for not progressing fast. It also criticizes China for its recognition of individuals' rights. But I think the West needs to recognize China as a developing country that is moving in the right direction in many fields."

PARIS, Nov. 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and his French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday vowed to boost the comprehensive strategic partnership between their countries. In talks with Sarkozy, Hu said the China-France relationship has been characterized by its strategic and global nature and its ability to move with the times since diplomatic ties were forged 46 years ago.Political dialogue has increasingly deepened and political mutual trust strengthened, said Hu.Bilateral trade is expected to exceed 40 billion U.S. dollars this year, and mutual investment has continuously increased, he said.The two countries have carried out extensive exchanges and cooperation in education, science and technology, and culture, and have kept close communication and coordination on major international issues, he added.Sarkozy said it was a great honor to receive Hu in his second state visit to France.Sarkozy congratulated China on the successful holding of the World Expo in Shanghai, saying the expo was another major international event hosted by China after the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
