SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego Police asked for the public’s help Monday to find a legally blind man who disappeared from his South Bay apartment. Brian Sampson walked away from his apartment sometime around midnight, police said. He was having trouble sleeping and may have gone for a walk, according to officers. Family members said Sampson is blind and epileptic. He suffered a seizure earlier in the day and was acting confused, police said. Sampson recently moved to the area. Bakery owner Gerry Lawrie says has stood outside the front door for more than 20 years. Before that, it stood outside a previous location in Mira Mesa for several years. "He was particularly liked by the children. They like to run up and touch him, and take photos next to him," said Lawrie.The store mascot turned neighborhood icon vanished Tuesday night. In the surveillance video, a vehicle is seen pulling up just before 10:30 p.m. A man gets out and walks toward statue and pushes it to check the weight. He then walks back toward the truck, before turning around and eventually picking up the statue. Finally, he tosses it into the truck and drives off."Disappointed for sure," said Lawrie.Lawrie and his wife Lynn are both at a loss."Feels sad and empty because he was such a part of us. Customers are really upset," said Lynn Lawrie."The Baker Man" was first purchased at an antique warehouse in Corona. They believe it's fiberglass and weighed less than 100 pounds. The owners are making a direct appeal to the thief."He's a special friend and we would like him returned," he said. Two new fissures opened on Hawaii's Big Island, spewing lava and fueling fears of violent explosions more than a week after the Kilauea volcano erupted.Nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated since the Kilauea volcano erupted May 3, sending lava flowing into communities and threatening a nearby geothermal plant.The 17th fissure, a crack on the ground through which lava pours out, was reported Saturday night, the US Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said."Lava from this latest outbreak is actively spattering," it said.The volcanic vents, or fissures, have released slow-moving lava and toxic gas into island communities, gobbling up dozens of homes and vehicles.Another fissure, the 16th one, was reported earlier Saturday and "produced a lava flow that traveled about 250 yards before stalling," officials said.That vent was about a mile east of the Puna Geothermal Venture plant, where officials removed 60,000 gallons of flammable liquids due to safety concerns.In addition to the new fissures, USGS officials said an explosive eruption is possible at Halemaumau crater at the top of the Kilauea volcano.
