CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) - Two teenagers were stopped in their tracks when they looked into a tree and found a creature looking back at them along a Carlsbad street.Two Fridays ago, around 10:30 a.m., a freshman college student did a double take while walking along Babilonia Street in the La Costa area. He called a friend, who drove right over. They made a quick recording."Omigod, look at him," one of the teens is heard whispering in the video.Perched in a tree, about 25 feet up, was a mountain lion, growling.The mother of one of the teens tells ABC 10News soon after they stopped recording, they looked up, and it was gone.Lauren DuBois of Project Wildlife at the San Diego Humane Society, says it's hard to tell the big cat whether the mountain lion was a juvenile or an adult. She says it's not surprising it was in a tree."Not unusual at all. They will climb trees, and rest in trees quite often," said DuBois.Dubois says it was likely relaxing after a long night."They can have up to 100 square miles of a territory. Most of time they are hunting from dusk to dawn, so a lot of the time, that’s where (tree) they will be resting," said DuBois.The concern? Less than half a mile away, is La Costa Meadows Elementary School, which began in-person learning in October.Neighbors tell us there have been sightings of a mountain lion in nearby Box Canyon for years. One of those neighbors did file a report of the most recent sighting with state Fish and Wildlife officials.DuBois say this big cat wasn't being aggressive. What about the growl?"Hey, I’m up here. Don’t want you to be there. I'm going to take off now," said Dubois.She says if you ever do spy a mountain lion in a tree, slowly back away and maintain eye contact."It's probably going to just leave. If it does come after you, make yourself large and make noise," said Dubois.ABC 10News reached out to the elementary school and Fish and Wildlife officials, and are waiting to hear back. 1962

CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Camp Pendleton Marines and Sailors started training Friday to help firefighters at the Creek Fire near Fresno."They're the right people for the job because they're Marines and Sailors," Commanding Officer of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, Lt. Col. Melina Mesta said. She described the traits Marines and Sailors hold as well as their training that covers responding to practically every kind of disaster.Two hundred and fifty Marines and Sailors volunteered to train to help firefighters. They deploy Saturday to learn more in the Sierra National Forest. Lt. Col. Mesta said by next week they will be on the fire line.On base, clumps of a couple dozen Marines in neon yellow shirts and forest green pants learned how to shelter in place if a fire overcomes them. They have a bag about the size of a loaf of bread containing what looks like a plastic tarp. They shake the tarp and cocoon themselves on the ground, crucial training that could save their life if they're overcome by the blaze.Military Liason with the U.S. Forest Service Frank Guzman explained why these crews are so vital, "our crews, who start in the southwest maybe, they're just tired and they've been doing this since April and we don't have anyone else to go to."Guzman said they are already utilizing the National Guard and resources from Canada and Mexico. Marines and Sailors are their last resource."Marines haven't been deployed since 1994 but in four out of the last six years we've had the active military deployed, so it's getting more and more common," Guzman said.More common, but never something San Diegan LCpl. Marissa Urias thought she would do. "My original plan was to go to college after high school and study Kinesiology and Minor in Nutrition, and then my dad told me my great-grandpa was in the Marine Corps. My dad was also in for four, or five years so then I also had a sense of calling to also join, but I never really envisioned myself going to help out and assist with the fires," LCpl. Urias said. She admitted she was a little anxious, but she's ready to protect her neighbors."California is here, California is home, got to protect it while you can," she said.Lt. Col. Mesta said several of those being deployed have family in the area and they're honored to protect their families and neighbors.LCpl. Urias is part of the first wave that will come out of Camp Pendleton. They are training another group so they can be ready for the future, whether that is far away or right here in San Diego."If the season continues like this there's always that possibility," Guzman said the lack of rain created these dire circumstances.Currently, 106 large wildfires are burning across the Western U.S., according to the National Interagency Fire Center, and nearly 6.7 million acres burned this year. CALEXICO, Calif. -- High school seniors around the country are coping with missed milestones like prom and walking across the graduation stage. "Our students invested 12, 13 years in their education, so we must invest in something to give them back, a ceremony they can be proud of," said John Moreno, principal of Aurora High Continuation in Calexico, California. Several of the students graduating will be the first in their families to get a diploma. Students come to the continuation school for a fresh start; many were at risk of not graduating. "It's a very big deal, many of them have not received any accolades, or any awards or any kind of recognition, any kind of victory. So when we see them with this victory, this is a big one," said Moreno. When graduation was canceled due to COVID-19, students and their families were devastated.So the district wanted to do something special, enlisting help from VEGO Pictures to create a virtual graduation. The Hollywood production company changed its business model seemingly overnight to create virtual graduations for schools around the country. The move also helped employ Hollywood producers and directors out of work due to the pandemic. With guidance from a VEGO Pictures producer, schools tape various clips they'd like to include in the virtual ceremony, and then the production company handles the rest. Customized for each school, the ceremony is a tribute to student's talents and achievements from the last four years. Anyone around the world can tune in to the virtual ceremony."I think it's pretty cool!" said Lorenzo Lopez, an Aurora High graduate. "Since it's going to be recorded and not in person, I can save it and watch it another time and show it to my kids and my grandkids."While disappointed they couldn't have a traditional ceremony, students say they're grateful to at least have this memory. 1879
