Deputies conducting a security check at the Front Street detention center found 26-year-old Ivan Ortiz of San Ysidro unconscious in his cell about 3:45 p.m. Monday, according to sheriff's officials. ``Deputies and medical staff performed lifesaving measures until paramedics arrived and transported Ortiz to the hospital,'' Lt. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man who fired a pellet gun at Navy SEAL instructors and trainees conducting a nighttime training exercise near Liberty Station was sentenced on Thursday to a year in jail.Scott Douglass Weaver, 48, pleaded guilty last month to making an attempted threat on a witness and brandishing a replica firearm.Because of credit for time already served, Weaver will spend about 80 more days in local custody before being released, authorities said.Dispatchers received a report of a man shooting at Navy officers shortly before 10:45 p.m. on July 23 in the 2500 block of Laning Road and Weaver was arrested. No military personnel were injured, according to the Navy.Police did not say if Weaver had a motive for firing at the SEALs or if he was even aware of who he was shooting at.In light of the shooting, the Naval Special Warfare Command said it would evaluate its training procedures. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A study released Monday by the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative found that more than one-third of fifth-, seventh- and ninth-graders in public schools around the county are obese or overweight. The study found that 34% of students in the examined grades were overweight or obese during the 2017-2018 school year, using data from the California Department of Education. The county had a lower obesity rate than California's 39% and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention's 2015-2016 national estimate of 40.7% for youth aged 2-19. The study found disparities in obesity among ethnic and economic groups, with 24% of white students classified as obese, compared to 49% for native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander youths and 43% of Hispanic or Latino children. In addition, 42% of students facing disadvantages like homelessness, being in the foster care system, meal scarcity and having parents without a high school diploma were found to be obese or overweight. Only 24% of students who were not deemed socioeconomically disadvantaged were found to be overweight or obese. ``Childhood obesity remains a pervasive challenge, and sadly current rates have not changed much from the previous report released for the 2014-2015 school year,'' said Dr. Wilma Wooten, the county's public health officer. ``This indicates a need for new and continued investment in our communities to address the root causes and environments that hinder children's health.'' According to the Childhood Obesity Initiative, students who face challenges like food scarcity are often more likely to face issues with obesity because they don't have easy access to healthier and more affordable food options. Within the county, higher levels of obesity in children roughly correlated with census tracts in which higher levels of the population had an income of 200% of the federal poverty level or less. In addition, school districts with a higher rate of students in the Federal Reduced Price Meals Program tended to have higher rates of overweight or obese students. ``As a nation, we struggle with the idea that a child can be both overweight and not have enough to eat,'' said San Diego Hunger Coalition Executive Director Anahid Brakke. ``But these are two sides of the same coin. Families struggling to make ends meet must often sacrifice buying healthy food for cheaper, nutrient-poor options that are filling but high in calories, fat and sugar.'' SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Coroner's officials today said that a worker who fell 60 feet to his death while setting up a stage for the first weekend of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio was a 49-year-old San Diego man.The worker was identified as Christopher Griffin, according to the Riverside County Coroner's Office. The Riverside County Fire Department reported receiving a call of someone falling from a roof at 9:26 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of Monroe Street and Avenue 50.The venue for the festival, the Empire Polo Club, is located on the southwest corner of that intersection. Griffin was pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said.In a written statement Saturday, the festival's production company, Goldenvoice, confirmed the death."Today, Goldenvoice lost a colleague, a friend, a family member. Our friend fell while working on a festival stage. It is with heavy hearts and tremendous difficulty that we confirm his passing. He has been with our team for twenty years in the desert and was doing what he loved. He was a hard- working and loving person that cared deeply about his team. As our lead rigger, he was responsible for the countless incredible shows that have been put on at the festival. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect was arrested Monday morning after climbing onto the roof of a La Jolla home, where he remained for just over an hour before surrendering to SDPD officers.Dispatchers received a call around 4:45 a.m. from a woman who reported hearing a person on the roof of her home in the 1500 block of Coast Walk, off Torrey Pines Road just east of Prospect Place, San Diego police Officer Tony Martinez said.Officers responded to the home and the woman pointed them to where she had seen the suspect, Martinez said.Police entered the home to make sure the suspect hadn't made it inside, then they spotted him on the roof and ordered him to surrender, the officer said.The suspect surrendered and was taken into custody around 6:10 a.m., Martinez said.
