SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  An ex-con who kidnapped a coach and a 16-year-old baseball player from a field in Kearny Mesa at gunpoint and made the man drive him to Ramona, where he carjacked a 79-year-old woman to make his getaway, was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole plus two other life terms.Ira Stringer, 48, was convicted last month of 13 felony charges, including kidnapping during a carjacking, kidnapping for extortion and assault with a firearm.Stringer has a long criminal history, including a 1997 conviction for a home-invasion armed robbery in Spring Valley in which he held a family overnight and threatened to kill them."You are the poster child for the three-strikes law," Judge Frederick Maguire told the defendant. "You've demonstrated that you're a danger to the community."Stringer was serving a 20-year sentence for robbery in Orange County when he was charged last year with abducting 27-year-old Dylan Graham and 16-year-old Jack Spencer from Hickman Field in Kearny Mesa, where Graham was giving the teenager a batting lesson on Dec. 23, 2015.Deputy District Attorney James Koerber said Stringer approached the victims holding a loaded .357 Magnum and demanded that he be driven to Ramona.Stringer told Graham that he had been in a gunfight and needed to get "far away," according to the prosecutor.During the 40-minute drive to Ramona, Stringer held the gun to Graham's head.Graham said he decided to do something, letting go of the steering wheel and jumping in the back seat in an attempt to get the gun away from Stringer.Graham said Stringer fired three shots, all barely missing him. The victim's car crashed, and was a total loss.Outside the car, Stringer acted like he was hurt and flagged down and carjacked 79-year-old Barbara Roulier and stole her car.Roulier, now 81, told Stringer she has forgiven him for what he did to her that day.Stringer robbed a convenience store in San Diego three days after the kidnapping and carjacking and a few hours after that, robbed a store in Orange County with a shotgun. 2083

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Where the 5 freeway meets the Coronado Bridge, under the loud noise of cars sits a historic gem, a staple of Barrio Logan, Chicano Park. "It's always growing, new murals, new activities."Vibrant murals, familiar sounds and a sense of community is often what you find and feel. "I think people feel that energy and see those colors and images of faces that are familiar to them." For 50 years, Chicano Park has united people of all backgrounds including hispanics, african-americans, latinos, and chicanos, in particular. "We like to clarify that we're more than that. Yes, we have spanish heritage but we also have native american and indigenous heritage," said Beatrice Zamora-Aguilar. Aguilar is an author, teacher and member of Chicano Park's steering committee. Her first visit to the park was in the late 1970's. "That was an eye-opening and exciting event, to see so many aspects of my culture in one place. Music, dance, speakers, mural art, paintings, and low riders. It was so many different parts of my culture all in one place being embraced in one celebration." Since then, she's become a part of the park's roots."It's a place we come together sometimes to take action on various issues through the community." But little do people know she said, Chicano Park almost didn't exist. "The story goes Mario Solis is walking through the neighborhood and sees these big construction equipment." She said Solis alerted everyone he could, and together they created a human chain to stop the city from building what would've been a highway patrol substation. This was after thousands of chicanos in the neighborhood were already displaced after zoning changes and factories were built. "They occupied land for 12 days and then started to talk with city officials about fulfilling their promise to build a park for the community." That story lives on through those who were there and now in a children's book by Aguilar. "Children need to understand places and landmarks they take for granted didn't just happen, it took people coming together who really cared about creating something for the children and future." The book titled 'The Spirit of Chicano Park'."Many of those elders have passed on now and I believe they leave a little bit of their energy and love in that park and that's what you feel." 2336

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Uber Eats will begin testing a new service that will deliver food using drones in San Diego, the company announced Wednesday. Uber and San Diego were granted the winning bid by the Federal Aviation Administration last year to test the new delivery service, according to the company. Here’s how Uber says the system will work: After a restaurant loads the meal into the drone and the drone takes off, a system will notify a nearby Uber Eats delivery partner to meet the drone at a drop-off location. The orders will then be picked up and hand-delivered to customers. RELATED: Juniper & Ivy ranked among best restaurants in the US for a night outIn the future, Uber Elevate plans to enable the drones to land atop parked vehicles within its rides network near delivery locations before the food is picked up and hand-delivered. The company says the initial phase of testing in San Diego was done with McDonald’s, but that it will be expanded later this year to include more restaurants, including Juniper and Ivy. “We’ve been working closely with the FAA to ensure that we’re meeting requirements and prioritizing safety,” said Luke Fischer, Head of Flight Operations at Uber Elevate. “From there, our goal is to expand Uber Eats drone delivery so we can provide more options to more people at the tap of a button. We believe that Uber is uniquely positioned to take on this challenge as we’re able to leverage the Uber Eats network of restaurant partners and delivery partners as well as the aviation experience and technology of Uber Elevate.” 1571

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - You probably don't know Encinitas resident Carol Areas, but you may have seen her words of encouragement scattered thorough San Diego. Ten years ago, she and her son began writing positive messages on rocks and leaving them around the city. Now they receive messages of people making their own rocks around the world.When Areas learned her son had Asperger's, she was compelled to start a new project, the Love it Forward List. "I felt the need to connect with people, to receive love, to know people are caring," said Areas. Whenever she hears someone is going through a hard time, she rally's volunteers to send them some love. "Five years now writing snail mails! I love that!" said Areas.So when she learned about 5-year-old Noah Avery and his 7-year-old sister Kalea, she called on her army of comfort warriors. "The moment I heard about this story, I thought we had to do a campaign for them," said Areas.In June of 2018, Kalea was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma, a cancerous brain tumor. "Thirteen days after we were told our daughter had a brain tumor, we were told our son Noah had a brain tumor," recalls their mother, Nohea Avery. There are only a handful of cases known of siblings being diagnosed with this cancer, doctors say. And Nohea says her doctors don't know any cases of siblings being diagnosed at the same time. "To have two, you kind of just, you go into survival mode. I always tell people well, we don't have a choice. You wake up every day, and you show up for them every day, and you kind of just, one foot in front of another," said Nohea. This summer, both kids were in remission, but then doctors found a small tumor in Noah's brain. They're traveling to Rady Children's Hospital each week from Los Angeles for proton radiation. But Nohea says throughout every challenge, complete strangers like Areas have shown up along the way.
