WASHINGTON (AP) — The number of U.S. active-duty troops deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border has "pretty much peaked" at the current total of 5,800, the Pentagon's No. 2 official said Thursday.That is far below the 10,000 to 15,000 that President Donald Trump initially said would be needed to secure the border against what he called an "invasion" of migrants.Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan was asked about the military mission one day after his boss, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis, visited troops near McAllen, Texas, and defended the use of the military for border security.Mattis said that within a week to 10 days, the troops currently deployed along the border in Texas, Arizona and California will have accomplished all the tasks initially requested by Customs and Border Protection, although he said additional requests were expected.Shanahan did not go into detail beyond saying substantial additional troops do not appear to be required."We've pretty much peaked in terms of the number of people that are down there," he told reporters at the Pentagon. He noted that the current mission is scheduled to end Dec. 15, adding, "That could always be amended."Mattis, while on his way to visit troops along the border in south Texas on Wednesday, declined to provide an estimate of how much the mission will cost.In his most extensive remarks about the hastily arranged mission, Mattis argued that it fits an historical pattern dating to early in the 20th century. He noted that President Woodrow Wilson deployed tens of thousands of National Guard and active duty troops to the border in 1916 in response to a Mexican military raid into the U.S. led by Gen. At Children's Hospital of Orange County in Southern California, pediatric physical therapist Ruchi Bagrodia covers posture and seating with kids who are of age.There are many things they should be doing.“I always encourage them, a child, to sit at a dining or office table, a chair with a seat back. Their back should be supported,” Bagrodia said.There are lots of things they shouldn't do.“Never sitting on the floor, never sitting in bed, never sitting on the couch,” Bagrodia said. “For therapy appointments or learning, it promotes poor posture if you’re in a squishy bean bag chair or couch. You’re never going to sit up well if you’re there for a couple hours. You’ll develop all sorts of kinks and achiness in the neck, the shoulder, the back.”Many Americans are at home, and these days, many are in chairs a lot. If you're using a device, it matters where you put it. “The level of the tablet, the height of it matters,” said Bagrodia. “We want it arm’s-lengths away and the top of the screen should be just below your eye level. If you’re on the floor and your tablet is on your lap, you’re going to be looking down at your lap and that can develop shoulder neck pain, achiness.”When asked about the long-term implications of persistent bad posture, Bagrodia said, “Poor posture is something is that is developed in a 6- or 7-year-old by the time they’re 20, maybe they do have serious back pain or issues.”While you're repositioning your children, doctors say, pay attention to their mental health too.“Across all different mental health issues, we’re seeing a marked increase, everything in kids. We’re not just talking one age range, we’re talking young childhood all the way through late teenagers,” says Dr. Christopher Min, a pediatric psychologist.Dr. Min says kids need the structure, stability and routine that school provides, and that is what's missing for a lot of kids.“Kids' bodies and brains do really well, “ Dr. Min said. “We’re creatures of habit, when they have that regularity, it’s really great for their brains.”Dr. Min says try to provide some sort of routine and make sure you incorporate enough physical activity, such as a daily family walk. And he says there are signs when things are not going well for children.“For kids, a sign of some mental health difficulties is irritability (which) is a symptom of anxiety and depression in kids,” Dr. Min said.He recommends to pay attention to sleeping and eating habits. While you can't do everything, you can definitely make sure children are consistently physically comfortable while learning at home. That doesn't mean you need a fancy or expensive desk.“If the chair is too high and their feet is hanging off, then put a box or laundry basket underneath their feet so they’re supported. If the laptop is really low, then put books or something under the laptop to lift it up, put a cushion if the chair is too big, put a pillow, or roll up a sweatshirt and tuck it under the low back for some support,” says Bagrodia.At the same time, if you are sitting for long periods of time, check your positioning as well, since it appears the work from home life won't be sitting anytime soon. 3488

In some cases, though, protests that started out peaceful have turned violent.“Injured three people, cuts and bruises,” said Mat Davis, a protester in Indianapolis, who saw a vehicle strike several protesters. “It was bad.”In Michigan, Bailee Majeske experienced a protest get out of hand.“There was a lot of rioting, just cars parked in the street were getting smashed,” she said, “and then there was a brick thrown at my head and my friend was stabbed.”So, what happens if you are injured during civil unrest? Getting medical attention is a first priority but knowing exactly what your health insurance covers is key.“You'd need to know what is in the policy - what is covered and especially what is not covered,” said Ray Farmer, who heads up the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). “If a protest happens to turn violent and include some rioting, I think that would be extremely difficult for an insurance company to prove that those injuries occurred due to an excluded act, even if the policy had such a provision.”Some policies, though, do have exclusions, like if you take part in “illegal acts” or participate in “civil unrest.” How that’s specifically defined would be up to an insurer, but it could range from vandalism and property damage to violating a community’s established curfew, or failing to leave an area if police order you to do so.However, Farmer says there are some things a consumer should be aware of, in the event they are denied coverage for the treatment of injuries sustained during civil unrest. We're all looking forward to the return of live in-person music events. However, some artists and people behind-the-scenes don't want the industry to return to how things were before the pandemic. They want to put a new focus on making the stage more inclusive."We're now in the year 2020. I think people have had enough," said Jerome Crooks with Never Famous. Noelle Scaggs with Diversify the Stage agrees. "I've hit my wits end with being the only one. Being the only one on a stage that looks like me, reflects my skin tone."The message that things have to change is growing louder since the death of George Floyd earlier this year. "The music business can't have an effect on society until we've held ourselves accountable," said Binta Niambi Brown with the Black Music Action Coalition. "For those of us who have long desired to advance issues of equity and justice, it (Floyd's death) created this undeniable moment and we felt like we needed to seize it."Brown is a music executive who recently co-founded the Black Music Action Coalition. She says when we look at music labels and publishers, there are few people of color in senior positions. "The reality is that when we improve anything for a Black person or for Black artists, Black executives, we're improving the model for everyone," said Brown.Noelle Scaggs, with the group Fitz and the Tantrums, is focused on having better pipelines to get young minorities into the live music and touring industry through her organization Diversify the Stage. "I think it's just really about widening the net of opportunity and recruitment and really kind of being considerate of your surroundings and I think we, as artists, we do have a responsibility to participate in this work," Scaggs said.Scaggs teamed up with the tour manager behind Never Famous, Jerome Crooks, to expand a resource where touring professionals can market themselves."The promoters and the vendors they have to listen, you know, and they have to want to be better," said Crooks.Live Nation Urban created a Black Tour Directory which lists hundreds of qualified Black professionals in the music industry. The effort is getting noticed, they landed on the cover of a magazine this month."As a Black man in this industry, I just want to move forward. I want to look forward and I want to bring people under my wing and bring them up," Crooks said. Scaggs added, "I would love for an organization like Diversify the Stage to not have to exist anymore.
