As people start letting house cleaners back into their homes, there are new protocols you should know about and new challenges out there because of COVID-19.The home cleaning industry was hit hard by the pandemic, because of everyone's fear. But as things start opening up, people want the service back. Brian Wiersma is a strategic initiatives and branch operations manager for Merry Maids.“A lot of our customers, they need our help cleaning their home and when you look at the CDC guidelines, the first step in maintaining a healthy home is to clean it before you disinfect it,” said Wiersma.He says, like everyone else, Merry Maids has had to adjust and adapt to every new recommendation from the CDC. No masks at first, and now masks all the time. There are new protocols for their team members and for their clients.“If you’re sick please, let us know even if it’s not COVID,” said Wiersma. “Let us know if you’re sick, so we can reschedule you just to be overly cautious.”They're asking employees to self-monitor, pay attention to everything they might feel, COVID-19 or not. They suggest clients either leave or remain in one part of the home. They bring their own equipment and clean the cleaning supplies when they're done.“As the team leaves the home, they take off the mask, they disinfect the kit before they put it in their vehicle to go to the next home, so they’re not taking contaminants into their vehicle and taking it to another customer,” said Wiersma.There are training videos, daily checklists, and they've even held meetings about how to take your gloves off.“It’s little things but in the same respect, it’s important things,” said Wiersma. “You take all these steps to be careful and precautious and at the very last step, if you don’t take your gloves off right you, might as well not have done the rest of them as far as keeping the team safe.”Angel Gatewood, 24, has been cleaning for Merry Maids for the past year. The hardest part for her, someone who loves customers and customer service, has been keeping her client relationships at a distance.“I still try to maintain that personal relationship with my customers which I think is important because I’m in their house every other week touching their things,” said Gatewood. “Your home is your personal bubble. When somebody enters it, you have to have that trust and I like to maintain that."She loves to connect with people and loves her detail-oriented job, but she has asthma and now has to be even more cautious than ever.“I personally take those extra steps,” she said. “I take my inhaler in every time. I wear two pairs of gloves. I also have eczema. It’s a double problem. I wear two pairs of gloves and the mask every time.”Wiersma says while COVID-19 has been challenging, it's about to get busier than ever as people realize health starts in the home."Merry Maids has been around for 40 years and Service Master for 90 years of cleaning and disinfecting, we'll stay who we are and that has helped us sustain through the crisis, but come out of it on a stronger footing." 3118
Farm life is not easy, but sometimes that life picks you.“When we were little boys, I think it was my dad pushing us out the door all the time,” said orchard owner Curtis Rowley, with a laugh. “As you get older, it gets it your blood and you seem to stay around.”Rowley is a fourth-generation farmer in rural Utah.“Here on the side of us, we have a tart cherry orchard,” Rowley said, motioning with his hand. “We also have a gala block of apples.”However, Rowley’s specialty is peaches.“I know when they are perfect, not by color, not but size, but when I cut them open and smell them,” he said.Knowledge passed down through his family taught him how to dodge the always humming farm equipment. He knows what to do when mother nature turns on the AC. Unfortunately, there are some things that even a seasoned farming family cannot plan for.“We were still pruning when the COVID-19 pandemic hit,” Rowley said.Like many in this business, Rowley relies on outside help for planting, pruning and harvesting. He uses the H-2A government program that allows U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals in to fill temporary agricultural jobs.“As they shut down the Mexico border at the end of March, our guys happened to be right there at the time,” he explained.Rowley said luckily, the group got through, but now, it is the harvest and it’s all hands on deck.He is feeling the pinch.“It’s really tight,” Rowley said. “I won’t tell you it’s perfect.”The window for picking does not stay open for long.“We have somewhere between three and maybe four days if we’re lucky,” he said.Rowley said he has tried other options, like offering jobs to people furloughed or laid off.“They’ll come and help for a bit, but as soon as their jobs open back up, they leave and that’s understandable,” he said.The timing of the harvest also coincides with schools starting.“To hire high school kids to pick apples is just not going to happen,” he said.Rowley said they will squeeze through the fall harvest, but others will not be as lucky.“There’s a lot of people still looking for help,” he said.As for the future, this farmer said his family will remain planted, ready to weather whatever storm comes their way.“We’re planning on being here farming and continuing to grow this fruit,” he said. 2278

Farmers are empowering America's future farmers through technology, as the agriculture industry becomes more dependent on modern equipment.Farmers are realizing the next generation needs to know how to use the latest and greatest tech tools.Andrew Nelson is a fifth-generation farmer in Eastern Washington who utilizes such as drones on his farm.“Me and my wife and two children live here on the farm in the exact same spot that my parents and grandparents lived,” Nelson said.“We had a few little homesteads that my grandparents set up for their children all within the same small area,” Nelson added.Even when he went off to college, he knew he'd one day come back. He then merged his love of technology with his love of family and farming.“I love to build things, (which) is my biggest draw to farming and software engineering,” Nelson said. “That’s why I wanted to combine the two to build digital and Ag. stuff together.”So now, he has two day jobs. He farms 8,500 acres of wheat, beans, peas and lentils. And, he's a software engineer. He is also a father, which also keeps him occupied. When asked if he'll be teaching his kids about farming and if he'd like them to have agriculture careers, he said, "If they want to. I don’t want to force them but living out here and having the exposure -- yesterday my son was on the combine with me for four hours so it’s likely they’ll want to.”Passing knowledge on to the next generation is another passion of his.“I like having the students in our high school be able to see the various opportunities in agriculture,” Nelson said. “If they’re thinking they’ll go to school for software engineering, that doesn’t mean you can’t be in agriculture as well.”The students, he says, like his drone technology. Nelson works with FarmBeats, a program within Microsoft that helps farmers use technology to drive their business. Drones give him a lot of data, and can even spray his crops. He even has sensors in his fields and grain storage.Megan Wilson, an agricultural education teacher and FFA advisor at a local high school, admits some of the tech that Nelson uses is out of this world.“I even get a little confused by some of the stuff Andrew does, so that is very complicated stuff but you know it used to be that we would plop a farmer in a tractor but now we have so many more options even from a driving aspect,” Wilson said.But she says the students who work with Nelson are intrigued.“They have been doing it since they are knee high and used to doing it the old fashioned way. When they see a computer, they’re mind blown; they don’t believe that’s how you can move into farming and we are moving in that direction,” Wilson said.She says FFA isn't what it once was and it's not just about farming.“It used to be cows, plows and sows and that’s what we did. We showed animals and played in the dirt and that’s what people thought of FFA,” Wilson said.They work with students in the agriculture world to incorporate science, technology, public speaking and interview skills. Wilson says they'd be doing them a disservice if they didn't teach all of that. Nelson says it's a win-win situation."It’s great to get their perspective because they think about problems in different ways than we do,” Nelson said. “hat’s why I like to show them what we’re working on and what the new possibilities are because you never know what student is going to ask that question that causes a big change.” 3446
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- Suspects reportedly forced employees onto the ground and into a vault during a robbery at a credit union in Escondido, according to the FBI. Police were called to the San Diego County Credit Union on the 1800 block of South Center City Parkway just before 10 a.m. after receiving reports of a robbery. After arriving on scene, police confirmed that a takeover-style robbery had occurred. According to the FBI, four men entered the credit union completely covered and armed with weapons. The suspects ordered employees to the ground and forced an employee to go into the vault to retrieve money. After grabbing the cash, the suspects fled the credit union in a late 80 or early 90s suburban, the FBI says. 741
ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) -- San Diego County's rising coronavirus case numbers will determine what can stay open and what must shut down again. The uncertainty is taking both a financial and emotional toll for local restaurant owners.Open. Close. Open. Close. This isn't the revolving door that welcomes customers into local restaurants, it's the state's rules on indoor dining that is worrying business owners."It's devastating thinking that we might have to close again," Charlie's Family Restaurant owner, Suzan Meleka said. "I haven't slept in two nights."When the quarantine began in mid-March, the 28-year-old Escondido diner had to shut its doors. Meleka said they tried take-out. But as a traditional sit-down diner, it just wasn't for them.Then came the good news on May 21, 2020. With temperature checks, new cleaning, social distancing protocols in place, Charlie's reopened, and their loyal regulars came back."The food is great, the prices are great, the atmosphere is great!" one customer said."It's like a family here," said another."We were worried that a lot of them might forget about us because we were closed for two and a half months," Meleka said. "So they've just been wonderful. They are glad to be back to some sort of normalcy."But that normalcy did not last too long for diners in 19 California counties on the state's watch list. On July 1, 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom declared that every restaurant in counties surrounding San Diego had to again, stop serving food indoors. So far, San Diego is clear from that list. But Meleka is worried we are next."I think if restaurants are following every single protocol, they shouldn't be penalized," Meleka said.Compared to their large dining hall and banquet room for overflow, Charlie's only has four outdoor tables. This may not be enough capacity for the beloved family diner to muscle through another forced shutdown."I keep saying it's the twilight zone because it's just unbelievable," Meleka said.Meleka hopes everyone follows the state's guidelines so that San Diego County can stay off the state's watch list.
