President Donald Trump plans to take a victory lap Tuesday as the U.S. grows ever closer to approving two COVID-19 vaccine candidates for Emergency Use Authorization.Trump will appear live at the White House Tuesday at an "Operation Warp Speed Vaccine Summit," where senior administration officials say he will encourage Americans to get vaccinated when the drugs become available and thank operation leaders for their work in approving and delivering the vaccines. The pending authorization of vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna marks a key turning point in the pandemic and offers a glimpse at a return to normalcy.Their approval also marks a medical miracle — the development of the drugs took less than a year, shattering the previous record of vaccine development by nearly three full years. But Trump's event is being held just hours after reports surfaced that his administration declined the opportunity to purchase an additional 100 million doses of Pfizer's vaccine candidate — a move that could further delay the U.S. push for herd immunity against COVID-19, as Pfizer must now fill substantial orders for vaccines from other countries.Trump plans to sign an executive order that will attempt to give the U.S. priority in getting vaccines ahead of other countries. However, the order does not appear to have legal teeth. When asked about the order on ABC's Good Morning America on Tuesday, Dr. Moncef Slaoui — Operation Warp Speed's chief vaccine adviser — said he could not explain the order and chose not to comment. 1535

President Donald Trump announced Saturday morning that American prisoner Josh Holt has been released from prison in Venezuela."Good news about the release of the American hostage from Venezuela," Trump tweeted. "Should be landing in D.C. this evening and be in the White House, with his family, at about 7:00 P.M. The great people of Utah will be very happy!"Holt, 26, a Utah native, is a Mormon missionary who traveled to Venezuela in June 2016 to marry Venezuelan Thamara Cale?o, a fellow Mormon, according to news reports. He was arrested shortly afterward and accused by the Venezuelan government of stockpiling weapons and attempting to destabilize the government, according to The Washington Post. Holt was held for nearly two years without standing trial.Holt's release comes more than a week after he posted videos to Facebook during a prison riot, pleading for help from Americans and the US government. In one video he said, "I've been begging my government for two years. They say they're doing things, but I'm still here."Holt and his wife were freed overnight and released to the US Embassy in Caracas, according to Foro Penal, a human rights organization of lawyers and others who assist political prisoners in Venezuela. The couple were scheduled to head to the airport in Caracas around midday Saturday, a Foro Penal spokesman told CNN.There has not been any official confirmation or comment from President Nicolás Maduro's government.Trump tweeted a second time Saturday, saying, "Looking forward to seeing Joshua Holt this evening in the White House. The great people of Utah are Celebrating!"Aides were asked to prepare for Trump to deliver a statement on Holt's release sometime Saturday night from the White House, a White House official told CNN's Jeff Zeleny. The details were still being worked out, the official said."We're grateful to all who participated in this miracle," Holt's family said in a statement.Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah announced his office helped secure Holt's release. "I'm pleased to announce that after two years of hard work, we've secured the release of Josh and Thamy Holt, who are now on their way home to the United States from Venezuela," Hatch said in a tweet."Over the last two years I've worked with two Presidential administrations, countless diplomatic contacts, ambassadors from all over the world, a network of contacts in Venezuela, and President Maduro himself, and I could not be more honored to be able to reunite Josh with his sweet, long-suffering family in Riverton," Hatch said."I want to thank (Senate Foreign Relations Committee) Chairman Bob Corker for his pivotal efforts, and that of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for their help in this effort. I want to particularly thank Caleb McCarry, whose expertise and effort in Venezuela on my behalf has been instrumental in bringing Josh home," he said, referring to an aide of Corker's.Corker is traveling back to the United States with Holt and his wife after he went to Venezuela to win their release."I am pleased to join Senator Hatch and President Trump in announcing the release of Josh and Thamy Holt," Corker said in a statement. "Senator Hatch has worked tirelessly on the Holt family's behalf, and I was honored to play a small role in bringing Josh and his wife home to the United States. I also would like to thank Secretary (of State Mike) Pompeo and his team at the State Department for all that they have done."Other members of Congress expressed their elation over Holt's release. US Rep. Mia Love, a Utah Republican, tweeted, "After nearly 2 years, Josh Holt is finally coming home! Thanks to @realdonaldtrump and others who I've had the pleasure to work with to secure Josh's freedom. #justiceforjosh #utpol."Republican Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, praised Hatch for working "tirelessly to bring this innocent young man & his bride home.""Josh & Thamy Holt had nothing to do with internal politics in #Venezuela," Rubio tweeted.The-CNN-Wire 4041

President Donald Trump attacked Republican Sen. Susan Collins on Twitter on Friday, saying that rumors about her planning to vote against his Supreme Court nominee are "nasty" and that it's "not worth the work" to try and swing her vote."There is a nasty rumor out there that @SenatorCollins of Maine will not be supporting our great United States Supreme Court Nominee," Trump said. "Well, she didn’t support Healthcare or my opening up 5000 square miles of Ocean to Maine, so why should this be any different. Not worth the work!"While Collins has not confirmed that she plans to vote against Barrett's nomination, she has said the duty of filling Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's Supreme Court seat should fall to whoever wins the 2020 general election. The New Yorker also reported on Wednesday that Collins called Barrett's testimony during her hearing "worrisome," saying that she appeared "evasive and wishy-washy." 927

President Donald Trump is asking the Supreme Court to put on hold an appeals court ruling that Trump’s accountant must immediately turn over tax records to a New York state prosecutor. The move on Tuesday sets up a decision from the high court that could come before Election Day. The court could allow the immediate enforcement of a subpoena issued by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. or block it temporarily. Even if the court rules against Trump, however, the records would normally not be made public but rather turned over to Vance’s office. This is the second time the records issue has reached the high court.Unlike most presidential candidates, Trump has opted not to release his tax returns to the public. Although details of Trump's taxes have largely been a mystery, a September New York Times report shed some light on Trump's finances. The president reportedly did not pay federal income taxes for 10 out of a period of 15 years. He also reportedly paid 0 in federal taxes in 2016 and 2017, an amount far lower than most would expect for a billionaire real estate mogul. 1106

President Donald Trump has been nominated a third time for the Nobel Peace Prize, this time by a group of Australian lawyers who praised his role in brokering a peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).“What he has done with the Trump Doctrine is that he has decided he would no longer have America involved in endless wars, wars which achieve nothing but the killing of thousands of young Americans and enormous debts imposed on America," Australian legal scholar David Flint told Sky News Australia on Sunday.President Trump was first nominated for the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize by a Norwegian Parliament member for his role in the UAE-Israel peace deal early in September. Then, a Swedish Parliament member nominated Trump after he helped secure a deal for normalized economic relations between Serbia and Kosovo. Also this week, former Vice President Joe Biden was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by a member of the British Parliament.“When others have resorted to violent solutions, he has argued that the best force is the force of argument,” Chris Bryant told the Evening Standard. “Because guns can stop a heart but well-placed words can change many hearts, and many hearts can change a world.”The Norwegian Nobel Committee begins accepting nominations in September for the following year. The deadline to submit a nomination is February 1 for the year of the award. Winners are then announced in early October. Both Trump and Biden’s nominations will be considered for the 2021 prize. There is no minimum or maximum number of nominations a person or group needs in order to be considered for the Nobel awards. The Nobel Committee has a 50-year secrecy rule on naming nominees. The group will not release the name of any nominee to the media, to the nominee themselves, or anyone until after 50 years.“In so far as certain names crop up in the advance speculations as to who will be awarded any given year’s Prize, this is either sheer guesswork or information put out by the person or persons behind the nomination,” the committee states on their website.According to Alfred Nobel’s will, the prize recognizes someone who has "done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". 2334
